a patrol vehicles dash cam video of Scott's shooting will be released tomorrow

Further video footage exists of the incident leading up to the police shooting of Walter Scott, according to North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey.

According to Summey, a patrol vehicle on the scene was equipped with a dashboard camera and recorded more of the incident than was captured in an eyewitness video that has been widely circulated online. Summey says he has not seen the dashboard camera footage because the incident is under investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), but a Police Department spokesman said that SLED would likely release the footage on Thursday. A SLED spokesman has not yet confirmed that the footage will be released.

#WalterScott is number one trending topic on twitter

Walter Scott, North Charleston go viral on social media after shooting video released

Graphic video that appears to a show a North Charleston police officer shooting an unarmed man in the back following a traffic stop Saturday morning has gone worldwide, trending both on Twitter and Facebook.

Walter Scott, 50, died from his wounds. A hashtag in his honor, #WalterScott, has been the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter as the nation reacts with frustration to the video on the heels of racial tension from other shootings involving police officers and unarmed black males.

North Charleston, S.C. is the top trending item on Facebook as stories about the video from media outlets across the world circulate the popular social network.

Video shows the moment cop drops the stun gun next to Walter Scott's body

A previous statement issued by an attorney representing Slager said that Scott took Slager’s stun gun before the officer fired at him; the video may or may not show this taking place, but it also appears to show Slager dropping the stun gun next to Scott's body after the shooting.

motorist and cop save small owl from crows

An alert driver and a California Highway Patrol officer rescued a small owl on Highway 221 in Napa that was unable to fly and was being attacked by crows, authorities said.

Around 1 p.m. Friday, a motorist flagged down Officer Garrett Ray near Napa Valley Corporate Way after he spotted the owl and put it in the cab of his truck, a spokeswoman with the CHP said.

Ray noticed the bird could not fly, so he brought it back to the CHP office in Napa and called around to find out who could take the animal, officials said.

He then took the owl to Silverado Veterinary Hospital, where it will be cared for until it can be returned to the wild.

Wealthy scientist tries to rescue California's shrinking GOP (father is Warren Buffett partner)

The California Republican Party struck another new low last week when news came that its shrinking ranks now make up less than 28% of the state’s registered voters.

But Charles Munger Jr., a courtly Palo Alto physicist who fancies bow ties and suspenders, is determined to reverse the party’s two-decade slide in California.

So the 58-year-old is tapping his vast family wealth to try to rebuild the once-mighty party that gave rise to the likes of Ronald Reagan. (Munger’s namesake father is the billionaire partner of investment icon Warren Buffett at Berkshire Hathaway Corp.)

Last year, Munger spent more than $11 million to elect Republicans to Congress and the Legislature, making him by far the state party’s biggest benefactor.

His funding of Latino, female and moderate candidates has been crucial to the party’s effort to shed its image as a league of conservative white men that’s increasingly out of step with a diverse state of almost 39 million people.

Adept at math and science, Munger earned a bachelor's degree in physics at Stanford University and a doctorate in physics at UC Berkeley.

"My thesis topic was The Lamb Shift in Heliumlike Uranium," he said by email.

Munger settled in Palo Alto, where he and his wife, attorney Charlotte Lowell, have raised three children. He has not held a paid job since his research appointment at Stanford's Linear Accelerator Center ended about 1992.

Family wealth has enabled him "to have the sort of scientific career usually supported by a salaried position at a national laboratory," he wrote. His work at particle accelerators "will make no one's toaster more efficient but seeks to answer fundamental questions about the universe."

What inspired him to enter politics, he told the audience at San Luis Obispo, was the 2005 special election called by Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. He liked Schwarzenegger's agenda — four ballot measures that would have curbed the power of unions and their Democratic allies.
