Texas man slips dirty license plate by state censors

William Long boasted on social media this week that he’s done it again. The Texan had slipped an at-first glance random jumble of numbers and letters past license plate censors this week.

What’s a “DV3H KID”? Flip it upside down. Now you understand.

Long has a knack for getting his naughty vanity plates approved by the state. The Rockwall resident posted a photo of the latest edition on his LR3 Land Rover on Instagram – next to a Lotus with the license plate that reads “370H55V.” We can’t write the hidden meaning here, but once again look at it upside and it’ll become obvious.

William Long ordered a custom license plate that said "DV3H KID." He revealed the plate's true meaning by placing it upside down on his vehicle.

Saudi Arabia advertises for eight new beheaders _ amputations also part of responsibilities

Saudi Arabia is advertising for eight new executioners, recruiting extra staff to carry out an increasing number of death sentences, usually done by public beheading.

No special qualifications are needed for the jobs whose main role is “executing a judgment of death” but also involve performing amputations on those convicted of lesser offences, the advert, posted on the civil service jobs portal, said.

The Islamic kingdom is in the top five countries in the world for putting people to death, rights groups say. It ranked third in 2014, after China and Iran, and ahead of Iraq and the United States, according to Amnesty International figures.

A man beheaded on Sunday was the 85th person this year whose execution was recorded by the official Saudi Press Agency, compared to 88 in the whole of 2014, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW). Amnesty said there were at least 90 executions last year.

You might not think you're sexist – until you take a look at your bookshelf

But passive bias is still bias - and it has ripple effects into the broader culture. Is it really so much to ask that we pay attention to what shapes our tastes?

For example, I was riding the subway recently when I noticed my seatmate scrolling through a Twitter feed that looked remarkably like mine. I was tickled to be sitting next to a like-minded person, but as I looked on I noticed there was one thing that seemed to be missing from his newsfeed: women. He was following fantastic and smart men, but still - as far as I could tell, all men.

I got the same uneasy feeling when I listened to a podcast interview with a TV showrunner and writer that I admire. He spoke eloquently about his passions and mentors - and the people whose work he liked most. All men.

I’m sure both of these people are smart, engaged and not deliberately or actively sexist - but when your worldview is solely shaped by men, you are missing out. And like it or not, your taste in music, books, television or art says something about you: it sends a message about what you think is worth your time, what you think is interesting and who you think is smart. So if the only culture you pay attention to is created by men, or created by white people, you are making an explicit statement about who and what is important.

Israeli government to pay African refugees $3,500 to leave

Israeli government to pay African refugees $3,500 to leave

The government says it wants to preserve Israel's ethnic character

The Israeli government will pay $3,500 grants to African refugees to encourage them to leave the country, it has said.

The country’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the move was designed to “protect the Jewish and democratic character” of the Middle Eastern state.

The country’s coalition cabinet voted unanimously last weekend to approve the plan, drawn up by the country’s new Interior Minister Silvan Shalom and supported by Mr Netanyahu.

“We are determined to remove the tens of thousands of infiltrators who are here, after we lowered to zero the number of work-seeking infiltrators who have entered Israel’s cities,” Mr Netanyahu said at the cabinet meeting, according to a government release.

Israel already pays grants of $1,500 to migrants who agree to leave but the proposal would see the figure raised to $3,500.

man waterboarding his girlfriend's five year old boy

Flint man was arraigned in court today on multiple charges of child abuse after police say he performed waterboarding on a 5-year-old boy.

30-year-old Michael Porter has been charged with unlawful imprisonment, second degree child abuse, second degree child abuse in the presence of another child, assault with a dangerous weapon, and third degree child abuse.

Porter is accused of restraining his girlfriend's five-year-old son with belts, leaning him back over a footstool and pouring water on the boy's face, which was covered in underwear. This is known as "waterboarding" and simulates drowning. Police say this was done because the child ripped his backpack.

Both the five-year-old and his 12-year-old brother have been removed from the home.

Porter is being held on a $400,000 cash surety bond.

S.F. Catholic Church priest bans girls as altar servers

We now know that Bishop Salvatore Cordileone has replaced Illo with Father Vito Perrone, who had been at Mater Dolorosa Church in South San Francisco. Perrone has quickly set out to lower the volume of the discussion about gender roles and morality pamphlets that’s been raging around the school for the past few months and reassure school parents.

“Father Vito showed up and the first thing he did was schedule 40-minute appointments with every parent,” said Christy Brooks, who has a sixth and a fourth grader at the school. “He’s a wonderful human being and a wonderful spiritual teacher.”

So all is well? Not so fast. Illo continues to be a polarizing figure and is still attempting to walk back some of his more incendiary comments. In an interview with the Catholic World Report he said his decision not to allow girls to be altar servers was, “a poke in the eye of liberal San Francisco.” He said changes at the Star of the Sea were part of a “purge.”

---!-!-!!!

A Catholic priest, new to San Francisco and no stranger to controversy, has banned girls from acting as altar servers at Mass, a decision that sets his parish apart from all others in the archdiocese.
The Rev. Joseph Illo, pastor at Star of the Sea Church since August, said he believes there is an “intrinsic connection” between the priesthood and serving at the altar — and because women can’t be priests, it makes sense to have only altar boys.
“Maybe the most important thing is that it prepares boys to consider the priesthood,” he said.
The Richmond District parish is now the only one in the Archdiocese of San Francisco that will exclude girls from serving at the altar. Such a decision is “a pastor’s call,” said archdiocese spokesman Chris Lyford.

update on the woman who's tearful mugshot went viral when left kids in car for job interview

She was sentenced to 18 years supervised probation

Taylor's story gained attention in the media after her tearful mugshot photo went viral. The then-homeless woman claimed that she was trying desperately to get back on her feet from homelessness and has tried to find gainful employment. She tearfully insisted that she left her children in the car because she had no other choice since she couldn’t find affordable child care.

An online fundraising campaign raised over $110,000 donations for the Taylor’s defense and to help her get back on her feet. Donors sympathized with the mom, who was faced with the horrifying choice of either missing a job opportunity or leaving her children in a car for a short period of time.

Shanesha Taylor’s life since her mugshot went viral hasn’t always been on the straight and narrow, prosecutors argued. USA Today notes that Taylor may have lied when she claimed she was homeless and living in a car, when in fact she may have been living with family. Despite being so desperate for employment, she appears to have turned down several job offers. Despite claiming that media attention kept her from getting jobs, the prosecutor argued that Taylor continued to hold press conferences.

Most damning to Shanesha’s case is the fate of the tens of thousands of dollars raised in her name. Taylor has missed two deadlines to put the money into college funds for her children, and at one point she was withdrawing as much as $4,000 per month from the fund for “living expenses.”

On Friday, Superior Court Commissioner Jeffrey Rueter determined that Taylor’s decision to leave her kids in her car constituted “criminally poor judgment.” Her sentence will spare her jail time if she stays out of trouble, and also allows her to travel out of state if she gets permission.

Shanesha Taylor says she intends to move to Chicago, where she’ll be able to get support from family members.

california Senate candidate taps hand over her mouth and "whoops" stereotypical "war cry"

Senate candidate in trouble over Native American 'war cry' in California
Loretta Sanchez was recorded tapping her hand over her mouth while whooping when describing she mistook an Indian supporter for a Native American
California congresswoman has been sharply criticised for making a stereotypical “war cry” sound when referring to Native Americans at a political meeting.

Loretta Sanchez was recorded on a cellphone video tapping her hand over her open mouth while whooping, during a talk at the California Democratic Party convention on Saturday.

Sanchez, a candidate for the Democratic nomination in next year’s open US Senate race in California, was trying to explain to party members that she had expected a supporter who described himself over the telephone as Indian American to be Native American.

“So I’m going to his office, thinking that I’m gonna go meet with wuh-wuh-wuh-wuh, right?,” Sanchez said, making the war-cry action with a hand. “Cos he said ‘Indian American’. And I go in there and it was great.”

Is mural of girl feeding beaver at adult bookstore taboo?

http://wtvr.com/2015/05/15/taboo-adult-bookstore-feedurbeaver-mural-controversy/
RICHMOND, Va. – Some viewers contacted WTVR CBS 6 News when they spotted a mural being painted on the side of an adult bookstore in Richmond.

The vibrant, cartoonish work depicts a female feeding a purple beaver an apple. But some fear the colorful creation may attract children.

Jason Sears has nothing but praise for the mural, but questions where it was installed.

“It’s beautiful… It’s just scary that a kid might come in and expect to see a children’s book store,” Sears said.
