Trump bets on mass amnesia
By Dana Milbank Opinion writer May 20
Just how gullible does Donald Trump suppose the American voter is?
The billionaire showman has been the presumptive Republican presidential nominee for only a couple of weeks, yet his general election strategy is already becoming clear: hope for a mass nationwide outbreak of short-term memory loss. His top strategist, Paul Manafort, has said that the part that hes been playing is now evolving. But this isnt evolution its reincarnation.
That call Trump made for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States? Turns out that was just a suggestion, he now says.
The federal minimum wage increase, which he repeatedly opposed? Now hes looking at an increase, he says.
The massive tax cut he proposed during the primary, which analysts said would add $10 trillion to the federal debt? Never mind! Hes hired experts to rewrite it in a way that cuts taxes less for the wealthy.
Those tax returns he promised certainly to release? Not going to happen, he says now.
One of his key surrogates, Rep. Chris Collins (R-N.Y.), now declares that he doesnt expect Trump to build a border wall or deport 11 million illegal immigrants the cornerstones of Trumps primary campaign. The congressman told the Buffalo News that Trump would build a virtual wall and that his deportation plan was rhetorical.
Remember all those companies Trump blasted for sending jobs overseas? Ford was a disgrace, Disney had outrageous practices, Carrier deserved higher taxes, Apple should be boycotted because it didnt help the FBI in a terrorism case, and Trumps never eating an Oreo again because Nabisco outsourced. Financial disclosures this week showed Trump has invested in all of the above.
Or his incendiary (and retracted) claim that women who have abortions should face criminal punishment? What he really was saying was women punish themselves, he told the New York Times Magazine.

Poll: Trump trails Clinton by nearly 40 points with Latinos
Poll: Trump trails Clinton by nearly 40 points with Latinos
Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump faces a serious challenge with Latinos, according to a Fox News Latino poll published Friday, trailing Hillary Clinton among those voters by nearly forty points.
Clinton leads Trump 62% to 23% with Latino voters, according the poll out Friday. And 74% said they have an unfavorable opinion of the likely Republican standard-bearer.
The steep numbers underscore Trump's challenge in the general election, with Latino voters -- one of the fastest-growing parts of the electorate -- particularly in swing states out West. Barack Obama beat Mitt Romney among Latinos by 44 points in 2012.
"Much was made during the 2012 election about Mitt Romney's dismal performance among Latino voters (27 percent)," Fox reports. "But Trump's current 23 percent ... paired with the 74% unfavorable rating has the real estate mogul facing a monumental task if he wants to win over Latinos."
Still, these voters are not exactly embracing Clinton. While better than Trump, Clinton is viewed favorably by 56% of Latinos compared to 41% who have an unfavorable opinion. And as the poll points out, Obama far outperforms either candidate, with 72% saying they have a favorable opinion of the president.

"Most clothes are worn, on average, only seven times before they’re discarded,"
There are few industries fickler than fashion, changing annually and swapping seasonally. The good news is that fashion can, in theory, change more quickly than the energy or agricultural industries, for example. And when it comes to tackling climate change, agility and the ability to rapidly retool practices will be essential attributes of the most resilient and sustainable industries.
This is how Emma Watsons recent take on waste she appeared at a red carpet New York City gala wearing a dress made entirely of trash could herald a new trend for fashion. Or at least, it should, because were rapidly approaching peak stuff with bursting consumer closets that are unsustainable by any measure.
Most clothes are worn, on average, only seven times before theyre discarded, forcing an astonishing 150 billion new clothing items to be made annually. Thank fast fashion, a business model based on the fabrication of hyper trends and clothing that doesnt last for consumers to accumulate. But given limited natural resources and the urgent need to protect what remains from further apparel-driven pollution, the cutting edge in fashion will soon need to trend and tack towards something more people- and planet-friendly.
Getting clothing cheap enough for the fashion industrys disposable model has required massive amounts of cheap material and cheap labor both of which came with devastatingly high and unaccounted-for costs.
First, the push for low prices led to cheap material. Polyester is the worst: Its a plastic made from fossil fuels and found in 50 percent of all clothing. Its enormously energy intensive and doesnt bio-degrade, making for a catastrophic carbon and environmental footprint. In outsourcing production, a process greased by decades of trade deals, we simultaneously outsourced pollution to countries with even dirtier power grids. Now, 10 percent of the worlds total carbon footprint comes from the apparel industry, and apparel is the second largest polluter of fresh water globally. These are devastating stats, and were wearing them on our sleeves.

"Trump’s lies arrive with such rapidity that before 1 can be refuted a new 1 comes to take its place
Trumps lies arrive with such rapidity that before one can be refuted a new one comes to take its place. It wasnt his voice on that tape of pitiful self-promotion. O.K., it wasbut he never mocked the handicapped reporter, he was merely imitating an obsequious one. The media eventually moves on, shrugging helplessly, to the next lie. Then the next lie, and the next. If the lies are bizarre enough and frequent enough, they provoke little more than a nervous giggle and a cry of Well, guess hes changed the rules!
Hes not Hitler, as his wife recently said? Well, of course he isnt. But then Hitler wasnt Hitleruntil he was. At each step of the way, the shock was tempered by acceptance. It depended on conservatives pretending he wasnt so bad, compared with the Communists, while at the same time the militant left decided that their real enemies were the moderate leftists, who were really indistinguishable from the Nazis. The radical progressives decided that there was no difference between the democratic left and the totalitarian right and that an explosion of institutions was exactly the most thrilling thing imaginable.
The American Republic stands threatened by the first overtly anti-democratic leader of a large party in its modern historyan authoritarian with no grasp of history, no impulse control, and no apparent barriers on his will to power. The right thing to do, for everyone who believes in liberal democracy, is to gather around and work to defeat him on Election Day. Instead, we seem to be either engaged in parochial feuding or caught by habits of tribal hatred so ingrained that they have become impossible to escape even at moments of maximum danger. Bernie Sanders wouldnt mind bringing down the Democratic Party to prevent it from surrendering to corporate forcesand yet he may be increasing the possibility of rule-by-billionaire.

The one number that should worry Republicans most about Donald Trump
There isn't much difference between how voters regard Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in the new New York Times-CBS News poll. Large majorities believe neither candidate shares their values or is honest and trustworthy. Smaller majorities believe both Clinton and Trump have "strong qualities of leadership."
But on the question of whether the candidates have the "right kind of temperament" to be president, there's a clear difference. Voters are largely split on the question when it comes to Clinton, with 48 percent saying she does possess the right temperament and 49 percent saying she doesn't. There's no such divide when it comes to Trump. Seven in 10 voters believe he does not have the right temperament to be president, with just 27 percent saying he does.
That matters. A lot.
Trump ran a primary campaign based, in large part, on the brashness of his personality. He was the candidate willing to get personal about "Little Marco" and "Lyin' Ted," the one candidate who refused to apologize when he said or did something that rubbed some people (or a lot of them) the wrong way.
And Trump has insisted he has no plans to back away from that shoot-first-ask-questions-later approach in the general election. Trump, he insists, will continue to do Trump.
On one level, that makes perfect sense. Put yourself in Trump's shoes. He just beat 16 other people many of them longtime and much-accomplished politicians by being unapologetically himself. He did it amid all sorts of questions about whether he needed to moderate his tone or act more presidential. He acted like himself. And it worked. Perfectly.
But, it's hard to see any candidate Democrat or Republican, Donald Trump or not winning a general election for the most powerful and visible job in the country if 7 in 10 voters don't believe you have the temperament to be the nation's chief executive.

Georgia cops high-five after Tasering psychotic man to death
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/georgia-cops-high-five-tasing-psychotic-man-death-video-article-1.2644038Minutes after a handcuffed man was shocked to death by Taser guns in front of his family by Georgia police officers, cops high-fived each other and reassured themselves that they wouldnt lose their jobs, chilling new police video shows.
The cops callous reaction was captured on body cam footage that shows the November death of Chase Sherman, 32, who was Tasered 15 times by two Coweta County Sheriffs deputies after having a psychotic episode from spice, or synthetic marijuana, in the back of his family's rental car.
You actually see a man get tortured to death for four minutes, L. Chris Stewart, the Sherman familys attorney, told the Daily News, a day after he viewed the horrific video for the first time. Sherman's family have fought for the video's release in an attempt to bring charges against officers
Moments after Sherman dies, as his stunned family stands on the side of the highway, cops are heard fearing for their jobs.
Cops not charged after using stun guns on man who died in custody
Dude, Im f--king fired, man, one panicked officer says to another cop.
Naw, youre good, the other officer reassures him with a smirk, one of the two body cam videos show. Sometime after Sherman's body is loaded into the ambulance, two officers are seen high-fiving (at the 9:25 mark in the Daily News edited video.)
Its absolutely horrific. Its probably one of the most interesting case studies in how officers react in situations like this, Stewart said.
___!!
After tussling with the cops for a few minutes, Sherman relents and declares O.K. Im dead, Im dead and I quit, I quit.
The two sheriffs deputies, identified as Samuel Smith and Joshua Sepanski, continue shocking him with Taser guns and sit on his back while he is handcuffed and face down on the floor of the car.
Sherman is heard crying in anguish as EMTs and police officers sit on top of him: I got all the weight on the world on him now, an EMT is heard saying in the footage.
City buys first bus tickets for homeless to leave Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. -- The city of Portland on Thursday bought its first bus tickets for homeless people who want to leave town.
Homeward Bound, the city-funded program designed to bus the citys homeless out of town, officially began Thursday. At least 40 homeless people want to leave Portland, and it's only day one. Officials in charge have been fielding calls and taking sign-ups since March.
One of those people, 18-year-old Dillon Hendershot, was ready to go at 5 p.m. Thursday.
I can't be homeless the rest of my life, he said. It breaks you down.
Hendershot held his $82 bus ticket to Spokane with an iron grip. Friends ditched the New Mexico native in Portland last week, mid-road trip.
He'd been sleeping in a tent under the Broadway Bridge since. He said he would have only lasted three more days.
"Then I would have just walked," Hendershot said.
The city paid for Hendershots ticket after staff at Transition Projects, a local non-profit, interviewed him and his mom. She lives in Spokane, and once she confirmed he could live with her, staff arranged the trip.

However, nothing happens until staff can confirm a family member or friend in the destination city will be there to pick up the homeless person and help them get back on their feet.
