workinclasszero's JournalThe ‘smoking gun’ proving North Carolina Republicans tried to disenfranchise black voters
By Christopher Ingraham July 29
Today, a federal court struck down North Carolina's voter-ID law, one of the strictest in the nation. In addition to requiring residents to show identification before they can cast a ballot, the law also eliminated same-day voter registration, eliminated seven days of early voting and put an end to out-of-precinct voting. The federal court ruling reinstates these provisions, for now.
Supporters of the law, like North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory, have long maintained that requirements like these were necessary to prevent voter fraud. But time and time again, scholars and legal experts have found that the type of fraud these laws are meant to combat is largely nonexistent.
One of the most comprehensive studies on the subject found only 31 individual cases of voter impersonation out of more than 1 billion votes cast in the United States since the year 2000. Researchers have found that reports of voter fraud are roughly as common as reports of alien abduction.
The federal court in Richmond found that the primary purpose of North Carolina's wasn't to stop voter fraud, but rather to disenfranchise minority voters. The judges found that the provisions "target African Americans with almost surgical precision."

Donald Trump and Russia: a web that grows more tangled all the time
Donald Trump and Russia: a web that grows more tangled all the timeFrank Mermoud, a key figure at the recent Republican convention, has strong business ties with Ukraine, to which others in Trumps orbit have been linked as questions grow over the candidates interests in Russia and view of its president

A key figure at the Republican national convention where Donald Trump was nominated for president has strong business ties with Ukraine, the Guardian has learned.
The party platform, written at the convention in Cleveland last week, removed references to arming Ukraine in its fight against pro-Russia rebels, who have received material support from the Kremlin. Trumps links to Russia are under scrutiny after a hack of Democratic national committee emails, allegedly by Russian agents.
The coordinator of the Washington diplomatic corps for the Republicans in Cleveland was Frank Mermoud, a former state department official involved in business ventures in Ukraine via Cub Energy, a Black Sea-focused oil and gas company of which he is a director. He is also on the board of the US Ukraine Business Council.

Donald Trump responded to the moving speeches of the father of an American hero at the Democratic National Convention by questioning why his wife stood at his side but did not speak.
The remarks were clearly intended to question whether the couples Islamic faith precluded her from speaking so publicly.
Khizr Khan, whose son, Army Capt. Humayun S.M. Khan was killed in Iraq in 2004, gave one of the most stirring speeches of the convention when he questioned what sacrifices Trump had made for his country. Khans wife, Ghazala, appeared beside him at the lectern but did not speak.

Donald Trump to Father of Fallen Soldier: 'I’ve Made a Lot of Sacrifices'
By STEVE TURNHAM Jul 30, 2016, 12:38 PM ET
In his first response to a searing charge from bereaved Army father Khizr Khan that hed sacrificed nothing for his country, Donald Trump claimed that he had in fact sacrificed by employing thousands and thousands of people. He also suggested that Khans wife didnt speak because she was forbidden to as a Muslim and questioned whether Khans words were his own.
Who wrote that? Did Hillary's script writers write it? Trump said in an interview with ABC News George Stephanopoulos. I think I've made a lot of sacrifices. I work very, very hard.

Fox News ignored a speech by the father of U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan, who was killed in 2004 in the Iraq war, instead opting to air commercials during the speech. Fox later went live to a song by pop singer Katy Perry after the speech.

Fox News Totally Non-Racistly Reminds You That Slaves Who Built White House Were "Well-Fed"
Well, why didn't you say so?TOMMY CHRISTOPHER
Only on Fox News would you see this kind of reaction to First Lady Michelle Obama's triumph of a speech at the DNC Monday night. If you recall, she used the line about the White House being built by slaves, a reference she's used before...

Your kid is way more likely to be poisoned by crayons than by marijuana
By Christopher Ingraham July 28 at 7:00 AM
A new study in the journal JAMA Pediatrics is making waves this week with the news that there's been a sharp uptick in emergency-room visits and poison-control calls for marijuana poisoning among children in Colorado.
The study found that the number of marijuana-related hospital visits for children under the age of 10 more than doubled since the opening of Colorado's recreational marijuana market, from seven in 2013 to 16 visits in 2015. Marijuana-related poison control calls for young kids also rose sharply over that period, from 25 to 47.
Opponents of marijuana legalization were quick to jump on the findings.

Careful with that Twitter finger.
The North Carolina Republican Party, which boasts on Facebook of its digital know how, took to Twitter to call Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine shameful for wearing a Honduras flag pin on his jacket but no American flag during his speech on Wednesday night.
Just one problem: It wasnt the flag of Honduras, but rather the symbol recognized by the Department of Defense for Blue Star Families ― the families of those who serve in the military.
