Canada's new food guide is loyal to science, not the food industry

The authors refused to use any industry-backed studies and the result is a guide that differs dramatically from past ones.

The authors refused to use any industry-backed studies and the result is a guide that differs dramatically from past ones.

Canada's new food guide, released on Tuesday, is causing a splash. The 62-page document is a drastic departure from food guides of the past. It urges Canadians to adopt a mostly plant-based diet, to drink water instead of milk, and to worry less about daily servings of nutrients and specific portion sizes and more about cooking meals at home and eating with family and friends.

The food guide is divided into four sections. The first focuses on nutritious foods and what comprises a healthy diet. This is where the emphasis on proportion, rather than portion, is most evident. The guide contains an image (above) of a dinner plate half-covered in vegetables, with quarter-sized servings of protein foods (nuts, chickpeas, tofu, beef, salmon) and mixed whole grains (toast, wild rice, quinoa).

The second part of the guide addresses foods that should be minimized or avoided. These include sugary drinks and confectioneries, alcohol, excess sodium, and sources of saturated fat.

The third section is perhaps most interesting, as it encourages Canadians to think about how they eat. The guide states, "Healthy eating is more than the foods you eat," and this section is dedicated to sharpening one's food skills and improving one's food literacy. Canadians are advised to cook from scratch more often, to go to restaurants less frequently, and to eat together. Parents are urged to transfer food skills to their children by example and through changes to school curricula. The guide advises a mindful approach to eating, careful reading of labels, skepticism about food marketing, and an effort to reduce waste.

Hulu will raise price of live TV packages, but lower the cost of basic streaming

Netflix isn’t the only streaming video company raising prices. Add Hulu to the list.

Next month, Hulu will increase the cost of its services that include live TV channels. For example, a package that has access to Hulu and live TV would cost $44.99 a month, a $5 increase starting on Feb. 26. Access to Hulu with no ads plus its live TV service will jump $7 to $50.99 a month.

In a statement announcing the price changes, Hulu said it added nearly a dozen live TV channels such as the CW and the Discovery Channel, improved the technology to support more devices on its platforms and well as offered many exclusive episodes and movies in the past year.

Hulu hasn’t raised the prices on its live TV packages since it launched in 2017.

...

The price hike won’t affect people who subscribe solely to Hulu’s on-demand video service, which has original shows such as "The Handmaid's Tale." Subscribers to its most popular plan, Hulu with ads, will actually see their cost go down $2 to $5.99 a month, which could tempt more potential customers to give the service a try. The cost of Hulu without ads will remain $11.99 a month.

Michael Cohen postpones congressional testimony because of threats to family from Trump and Giuliani

Source: CNBC

President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen is postponing his plan to testify before Congress in February because of concerns about his family's safety, according to Cohen's adviser Lanny Davis.

Davis cited "ongoing threats" to Cohen's family from Trump and the president's current personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, in the decision to postpone his Feb. 7 appearance before the House Oversight Committee.

A spokesman for committee chairman Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., as well as spokesmen for the White House and Giuliani, had no immediate comment.

"Mr. Cohen volunteered to testify before the House Oversight Committee ‪on February 7th," Davis said.

Pompeo Weighing Kansas Senate Bid in 2020, Source Says

Source: Bloomberg

Secretary of State Michael Pompeo is weighing a 2020 bid for the Kansas Senate seat that will open with the planned retirement of fellow Republican Pat Roberts, according to a person familiar with his thinking.

Pompeo met in recent days with Republican political strategist Ward Baker and spoke by phone with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell about the possibility, according to the person, who asked not to be identified because Pompeo hasn’t spoken publicly about the possibility.

Asked about Pompeo’s plans, State Department spokesman Robert Palladino said the secretary was “focused on serving the president and protecting the American people as secretary of state.” A McConnell spokesman and Baker’s office didn’t immediately return emails seeking comment on Pompeo’s potential candidacy, which Politico reported earlier.

Pompeo, who represented the Wichita area in the House of Representatives for six years before becoming President Donald Trump’s CIA director in 2017, has made no secret about his ambitions for higher office in the past, even at the risk of upsetting members of his own party.
