Detroit selected to host 2024 NFL draft, with events taking place all over downtown

PALM BEACH, Fla. — After more than five years of pursuit, the NFL draft is coming to Detroit.

NFL owners voted to award the 2024 draft to Detroit at the league's annual meeting Monday, picking the city over other competitive bids from Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Washington.

Detroit Lions president Rod Wood first broached the idea of bringing the draft to Detroit in 2017, when he outlined a proposal that would spread the event over several locations throughout the city.

On Monday, Wood said he expects "hundreds of thousands of people" to attend the three-day event.

'Historic moment' in Canada as Ontario strikes deal for $10-a-day childcare

Source: The Guardian

Canada’s most populous province has signed a long-awaited deal with the federal government for subsidized childcare, paving the way for a nationwide plan that Justin Trudeau hailed as a “historic moment”.

Unveiling the plan on Monday, the prime minister pledged that fees will eventually drop to C$10 a day by 2026, but experts caution that the plan must reckon with the reality of chronic staff shortages, fierce demand for limited spaces and murky funding agreements.

Trudeau and Ontario’s premier, Doug Ford, announced billions in funding for the province, part of a broader multibillion-dollar package offered to all provinces and territories.

“Childcare is becoming a reality for all Canadians,” said Trudeau.

How Joe Manchin Aided Coal, and Earned Millions

At every step of his political career, Joe Manchin helped a West Virginia power plant that is the sole customer of his private coal business. Along the way, he blocked ambitious climate action.

GRANT TOWN, W.Va. — On a hilltop overlooking Paw Paw Creek, 15 miles south of the Pennsylvania border, looms a fortresslike structure with a single smokestack, the only viable business in a dying Appalachian town.

The Grant Town power plant is also the link between the coal industry and the personal finances of Joe Manchin III, the Democrat who rose through state politics to reach the United States Senate, where, through the vagaries of electoral politics, he is now the single most important figure shaping the nation’s energy and climate policy.

Mr. Manchin’s ties to the Grant Town plant date to 1987, when he had just been elected to the West Virginia Senate, a part-time job with base pay of $6,500. His family’s carpet business was struggling.

Opportunity arrived in the form of two developers who wanted to build a power plant in Grant Town, just outside Mr. Manchin’s district. Mr. Manchin, whose grandfather went to work in the mines at age 9 and whose uncle died in a mining accident, helped the developers clear bureaucratic hurdles.
