WASHINGTON The Trump administration will encourage the nations school superintendents and college presidents to adopt race-blind admissions standards, abandoning an Obama administration policy that called on universities to consider race as a factor in diversifying their campuses, Trump administration officials said.
The reversal would restore the policy set during President George W. Bushs administration, when officials told schools that it strongly encourages the use of race-neutral methods for admitting students to college or assigning them to elementary and secondary schools.
Last November, Attorney General Jeff Sessions asked the Justice Department to re-evaluate past policies that he believed pushed the department to act beyond what the law, the Constitution and the Supreme Court had required, Devin M. OMalley, a Justice Department spokesman said. As part of that process, the Justice Department rescinded seven policy guidances from the Education Departments civil rights division on Tuesday.
The executive branch cannot circumvent Congress or the courts by creating guidance that goes beyond the law and in some instances stays on the books for decades, said Devin M. OMalley, a spokesman for the Justice Department.

'The Handmaid's Tale' Is Way Too Real -- and Watching It Has Become Masochistic
The current season of The Handmaids Tale has been brutal. And so has America as of late. When the show, based on Margaret Atwoods novel of the same name, premiered on Hulu last year, critics and viewers discussed its relevance during that political climate. This could happen in Americato America. That was the general consensus of much of its viewership, failing to recognize the long history of abuses portrayed on the show committed in real lifein Americaagainst Black, Latinx, indigenous and other women of color.
Even so, the election of Donald Trump felt like a precursor to the menaces, dehumanization and persecutions of the most vulnerable people in America, and the show was playing out the what-ifs that were well on their way to being realities. Spoilers ahead.
As this country continues to slide down a slippery slope into chaos, watching The Handmaids Tale has become masochistic as the main character, Offred/June, and other women are raped, abused and heavily oppressed by the fictional government of Gilead. I imagine this is what Stephen Millers dream journal looks like.
...
Now with Justice Anthony Kennedy, a vital swing vote for the left, announcing his retirement, Trump has an opening to make another lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. This creates a very real threat to the repeal of Roe v. Wade, further risks to womens reproductive rights and an attack on LGBTQ+ rights. On top of this, one of the leading judicial nominees, Amy Coney Barrett, is a fervent opponent of abortion rights and belongs to a religious sect that literally refers to women as handmaids. Basically, if you value a moral and just world and are petrified of a real-life Handmaids Tale situation, were fucked.

The Baltimore Museum Sold Art to Acquire Work by Underrepresented Artists. Here's What It Bought--
Its rare for an announcement about traditionally dry museum policy to generate international press attention in outlets as diverse as the Guardian and the Drudge Report. But the Baltimore Museum of Arts decision to sell off seven works by white male artists to create a war chest to fund acquisitions of art by women and artists of color drove a traditionally hermetic discussion about museum practices into the mainstream.
Now, the museums closely watched decision is beginning to bear fruit. The Baltimore institution is announcing today the first round of acquisitions purchased in full or in part with the more than $7.5 million generated from its sale of works by Andy Warhol, Franz Kline, and other 20th-century masters at Sothebys in May.
The new additions to the museums collection include Jack Whittens monumental mosaic 9.11.01 (2006), a response to 9/11 that incorporates ash and molten materials from the site of the tragedy. The Baltimore Museums director Christopher Bedford describes the work, which Whitten created over the course of five years after witnessing the attack on the World Trade Center from his studio, as the most significant acquisition Ill ever make for a museum.
He thinks so much of the work that he predicts that in 100 years, it will regarded as highly as Matisses Blue Nude (1907), which is currently considered to be the crown jewel of the BMAs collection. Bedford says he has been trying to acquire it for more than a decade, but Whitten only agreed to part with it shortly before he died, when the museum was planning a retrospective of his sculpture.

Bevin cuts dental, vision benefits to nearly 500K Medicaid recipients
Source: Courier Journal/USA Today
Gov. Matt Bevin's administration has abruptly cut Medicaid dental and vision benefits to nearly half a million Kentuckians, prompting an outcry from Democrats who called the Republican governor's decision "rash."
Louisville Democrats will hold a press conference Monday to denounce the decision over the weekend to cut benefits after Bevin's Medicaid overhaul plan was rejected Friday by a federal judge in Washington D.C.
"We are concerned about rash decisions made in response to the court ruling," said state Rep. Joni Jenkins, who will be among those speaking at the 10 a.m. event at 712 East Muhammad Ali Blvd. "We call for thoughtful discussions involving the administration and the many statewide stakeholders in the path forward in assuring Kentucky's working families have healthcare."
Others to appear at Monday's event include U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth, state Sen. Gerald Neal and Louisville Metro Council President David James.

EU warns U.S. of major hit if car tariffs imposed
Source: Reuters
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union has warned the United States that imposing import tariffs on cars and car parts would harm its own automotive industry and likely lead to counter-measures by its trading partners on $294 billion of U.S. exports.
In a 10-page submission to the United States Commerce Department sent last Friday, the European Union said tariffs on cars and car parts were unjustifiable and did not make economic sense.
The Commerce Department launched its investigation, on grounds of national security, on May 23 under instruction from President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly criticized the EU over its trade surplus with the United States and for having higher import duties on cars. The EU has a 10 percent levy, compared to 2.5 percent for cars entering the United States.
Trump said last week that the government was completing its study and suggested the United States would take action soon, having earlier threatened to impose a 20 percent tariff on all EU-assembled cars.
