Hillary Clinton Called Out For HYPOCRISY On Islamophobia

While denouncing Donald Trump's racist rhetoric, Clinton has retained a campaign surrogate who previously called for the internment of some Muslim-Americans

Eleven advocacy organizations on Thursday accused former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of sending "mixed messages" on Islamophobia by denouncing fellow 2016 presidential candidate Donald Trump's racist rhetoric, yet retaining retired general Wesley Clark as a campaign surrogate—despite his previous call to intern some Muslim-Americans. Clark, a longtime ally to Clinton, recently spoke in Iowa on her behalf for Veteran's Day. This is the same retired general who, in a " target="_blank">July interview with MSNBC, called for "disloyal Americans" to be placed in internment camps in the style of the World War II era.

"If these people are radicalized and they don’t support the United States and they are disloyal to the United States as a matter of principle, fine," Clark said. "It's their right and it’s our right and obligation to segregate them from the normal community for the duration of the conflict."

Clark added: "If someone supported Nazi Germany at the expense of the United States, we didn’t say that was freedom of speech, we put him in a camp, they were prisoners of war."

Thursday's letter argues that Clark's campaign role raises questions about Clinton's sincerity in denouncing Trump's plan to ban Muslims who are not U.S. citizens from entering the country. Echoing Clark, Trump defended his proposal by comparing it to President Franklin Roosevelt's decision to intern Japanese Americans during World War II. "At a time when American Muslims are facing a surge in violent hate crimes, we are asking you to hold your own campaign accountable," states the open letter, which is signed by CREDO Action, ColorOfChange.org, MPower Change, Emerge USA, Bend the Arc, Demand Progress, American Family Voices, We Act Radio, Presente.org, Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center, and the Muslim American Society of Boston.

"We are not aware of any statement from your campaign condemning Gen. Clark's frightening remarks," the letter continues. "Please immediately remove Gen. Clark from his role in your campaign, and promise to do the same with any campaign surrogates aiding and abetting the dangerous anti-Muslim mob mentality fostered by your opponents."

Clinton's impact on Muslims across the globe, however, extends far beyond her relationship with Clark. In her previous role as secretary of state and U.S. senator, Clinton consistently advocated for disastrous U.S. military aggression against Muslim majority nations, from Afghanistan to Libya to Syria to Iraq. In addition, Clinton has made her "unbreakable bond" with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—an enforcer of apartheid policies towards Palestinians—a centerpiece of her 2016 presidential campaign. What's more, in a speech delivered earlier this month to the Brookings Institution, Clinton invoked the so-called War on Terror to argue for the erosion of First Amendment rights.

"We're going to have to have more support from our friends in the technology world to deny online space. Just as we have to destroy [ISIS's] would-be caliphate, we have to deny them online space," she said.

"And this is complicated," Clinton continued. "You're going to hear all of the usual complaints, you know, freedom of speech, et cetera. But if we truly are in a war against terrorism and we are truly looking for ways to shut off their funding, shut off the flow of foreign fighters, then we’ve got to shut off their means of communicating."

Hillary Clinton Hasn't Won ANYTHING Yet

Her supporters want you to believe it's over. Don't fall for it. Polls say all kinds of shit. They are at best skewed snapshots, static moments in the flow of time. They never tell the whole story and are often used to dupe or brow beat people into believing something that is not true. They are questionable at best. Especially when you have corporate America and their wholly owned media lined up against you. All that matters are votes and not a single one has been cast. Hillary supporters want Hillary to win the primary without a contest. They want to proclaim it done. 'Give up! It's over! You can't win!' Her supporters, like her corporate sponsors, Wall Street, the Military Industrial Complex and the DNC, want to ram her down our throats. They want you to believe they've already won. Don't believe it. It's not true. This is till a democracy and now is the time to prove it.

Remember who owns the MSM. Remember who the corporations are behind. Do not believe the deluge of high-caliber corporate bullshit spewing from the disinformation machine 24/7. They are terrified of Bernie. They will spend billions to stop him. They will say anything, do anything to keep us from making him our president. And they are saying it and doing it every day. Don't believe a word of it. They mean to hang on to their government of, by and for the 1%. We won't stop them by rolling over for their lies. And if we don't stop them, it will be a failure with enormous consequences. Do not believe the corporate bullshit. I've seen people saying they have given up hope that Bernie can win. WTF? Not a single vote has been cast. This fight is not over, it's just begun, and this is the fight of our lifetime. We cannot afford to lose this struggle for the future of humanity. Don't you dare give up.

This is not the time to give up. This is the time to fire up. Work for Bernie, volunteer for Bernie, donate to Bernie, share the info, share this diary and all the others. Tweet, FaceBook share, burn up Reddit, get the word out. Talk to everyone you can. Write diaries or spread the diaries you find here and elsewhere. Flood your social network with information. Share the Bernie News Round-up every day. Help people to become informed and engaged. Do everything you can to wake people up before it’s too late. The internet is ours and it’s a powerful thing. Use it. And most of all, don't believe the bullshit. Damn the lies and the corporate bullshit, full speed ahead! Don't be demoralized by a bunch of empty rah-rah. This is our time. In a typical corporatist bullshit move, Time Magazine is ripping Bernie off after the people chose him as person of the year by a wide margin.

New Hampshire LOVES Bernie Sanders, and That's Really Messing Things Up for Hillary Clinton

Without being privy to any inside information, it’s safe to say that Hillary Clinton would like to enter her spring without hearing another word about Bernie Sanders. Really messing that up for her: Live Free or Die New Hampshire, which is turning into a Sanders love-fest, even among undeclared voters.

A new CNN/WMUR poll shows Sanders leading Clinton in New Hampshire by 10 points (although his lead has narrowed since September, when he was 16 points ahead). And while polls are essentially meaningless this far out, if those numbers hold even slightly true, they could be very inconvenient for Clinton, who’s hoping to knock Sanders out of the race in the very first round of primaries. New Hampshire is among the first, and Sanders surviving there could have big implications for the rest of the race.

More interesting is who likes Sanders in New Hampshire: not just Democrats, but “undeclared” voters, too—even the ones who say they’re more interested in the GOP race than the Democratic one. Fully 55 percent of those mysterious folks back Sanders, compared to 37 percent for Clinton. He’s also, as Public Policy Polling points out,the only candidate on either side who more voters in the state think positively about As CNN notes, Sanders tends to rank higher on perceived honesty and on whether he’s seen as “progressive” by voters, while Clinton gets higher marks for foreign policy and how people think she’d handle ISIS. Overall, though, one poll-watcher told Boston.com that Sanders’ favorability ratings here are “almost unheard-of.”

Poll: Voters FRET Trump or Clinton In The White House

Washington (CNN)Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump is building on his national lead among GOP voters, according to a New York Times/CBS News poll released Thursday morning. But many voters expressed fear or concern at the idea of a Trump presidency -- or a Hillary Clinton one.

Donald J. Trump occupies his strongest position yet in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, yet nearly two-thirds of American voters say they are concerned or frightened about the prospect of a Trump presidency, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News nationwide poll.

The poll was taken largely before his statement on Monday afternoon proposing to temporarily bar Muslims from entering the United States.

On the Democratic side, the poll found Hillary Clinton is maintaining her 20-point lead over Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont. The possibility of her winning the presidency in 2016 is only marginally more palatable to American voters than that of Mr. Trump.

~snip~

Over all, 24 percent of voters expressed concern and 40 percent fear about what Mr. Trump would do if elected president, whereas 23 percent said they are concerned and 34 percent scared about the possibility of a Clinton presidency. Not surprisingly, voters were sharply divided along partisan lines.

http://www.nytimes.com/politics/first-draft/2015/12/10/trump-solidifies-his-lead-but-leaves-many-nervous/

Trump is dominating the GOP pack with 35% support, according to the new poll. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson trail him with 16% and 13% support respectively. Trump has also led early state polling, with clear leads in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. But the new national poll also found that 24% of all voters showed "concern" and 40% expressed "fear" over what Trump would do were he to win the White House next year.

On the Democratic side, front-runner Hillary Clinton leads Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders by 20 percentage points. But voters also showed worry over a Clinton presidency: 23% said they are concerned by the possibility, and 34% said they were scared. The poll surveyed 1,053 registered voters, including 431 Republican primary voters and 384 Democratic primary voters, between December 4-8 with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points for registered voters, and plus or minus 6 percentage points each for Republican and Democratic primary voters.

Bernie Sanders’ New Hampshire Favorability Is ‘ALMOST UNHEARD OF’ In New Poll

Exactly two months until the nation’s first primary, a new poll finds Bernie Sanders is leading with 50 percent of likely Democratic New Hampshire voters to 40 percent that support Hillary Clinton. The CNN/WMUR poll released Wednesday shows Clinton picking up former Joe Biden supporters at a 2-1 margin since the last poll was taken. In September, Sanders led Clinton 46 percent to 30 percent in the poll, with 14 percent saying they would vote for Biden. Clinton’s numbers have since increased 10 percent, with Sanders picking up 4 percent.

Sanders had led in nearly every New Hampshire poll from the beginning August until the first Democratic debate in October. Since then, polling has shown a tight battle between the two leading Democratic candidates in the only early voting state where Clinton does not hold a significant lead. Conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center from November 30 to December 7, Wednesday’s poll also found that Sanders remains very popular among Democratic voters in the Granite State. Eighty-three percent of respondents said they had a favorable opinion of Vermont senator, compared to just 9 percent that had an unfavorable opinion. Clinton, meanwhile, was viewed 68 percent favorably to 24 percent unfavorably by likely Democratic primary voters. Dr. Andrew Smith, director of the UNH Survey Center, told Boston.com that Sanders’ popularity is “almost unheard of” this far into the campaign.

“I have never seen favorabilities for any candidate this high at this point in the primary,” Smith said, noting that Sanders’ net favorability has only increased since he entered the race.

This is how New Hampshire voters responded when asked their opinion of Bernie Sanders.

Smith added that Clinton’s favorability numbers are very strong as well, especially compared to the 2016 Republican candidates, even if they didn’t match her Democractic opponent. Smith said that he had just finished teaching a class on the New Hampshire primary, which included three seasoned campaign journalists. He had asked them if they had ever seen anything like Sander’s lopsided favorability numbers this far into the campaign season. They hadn’t.

The poll Wednesday also found that independents, the largest voting bloc in New Hampshire, supported Sanders over Clinton 53 percent to 22 percent. Sanders also held double digit leads over Clinton both among voters who described themselves as liberal or conservative. Among self-described moderates, Clinton led 45 percent to 44 percent.

Nina Turner On Bernie Sanders: She Believes He Is The BEST Candidate To LIFT UP The Black Community

Turner said the support she heard for Sanders in Baltimore, much of it from random people who happened upon the senator early Tuesday morning, belied the notion that the Democratic primary was wrapped up.

“The mainstream media is perpetuating this inevitability, which I think is wrong,” Turner said, without naming Clinton. “It does a disservice to the voters in this country, too. Basically what the mainstream media is saying is, ‘Nothing to see here on the Democratic side. Everything is all wrapped up.’ And it’s wrong. We saw people in that neighborhood saying, ‘Senator Sanders, we need jobs.’ Or people saying that he’s the only candidate not taking super PAC money. A brother yelled that out!

~snip~

Turner is talking to voters about having a choice in the primary — an attempt, in part, to close the gap with black voters leading up to Super Tuesday. The Sanders campaign hopes the story of her choice to endorse Sanders will encourage black voters to step out on faith. That was Turner’s pitch to a group of pastors following a press conference in Baltimore Tuesday. She exhibited a warm, familiar rapport with the ministers, who came from all over the country to meet with Sanders. “I think the biggest travesty in all of this is to take away choice,” Turner told BuzzFeed News in an interview. “And the same way that folks wanted to take away my choice, that is happening with everyday voters.” Turner’s endorsement of Sanders in November surprised, and in some cases stung, her fellow Democrats. Former Ready for Hillary communications director Seth Bringman criticized Turner in November:

Seth Bringman @sethbringman

Very disappointed my friend Nina Turner is abandoning @OHDems.

However, many other Democrats, many of them black, came to Turner’s defense, calling her a staunch defender of the black communities she represented in Greater Cleveland. Turner said she was still drawing conclusions about the Democratic primary before her endorsement of Sanders, and she made her choice because she believed he was the best candidate to lift up the black community. Turner called the backlash “insulting” and said she is still incredulous that “in the 21st century a black woman can’t make up her mind or change her mind.”

“As long as I’m doing what folks want me to do or expect me to do, I’m okay, but the minute that I grow a brain I’m not?” Turner said.

“I’m not here to hold up a mantle just because I’m a Democrat,” she continued “I’m here to fight for the things that we say we believe in. My ancestors died so that I could have a choice. And we’re not on the plantation anymore.”

Turner said the narrative of Clinton’s inevitability is affecting the way voters in the Democratic party think about the race. If voters keep saying that the race is over, “then what does that say about your voice? It means your voice is being taken away,” she said.

#BlackLivesMatter Activist #MarteseJohnson ENDORSES Bernie Sanders for President

You may remember Martese Johnson as the University of Virginia student who was slammed to the ground by three police officers and brutally beaten, an incident of police brutality that went viral. Since this incident, Martese has been an activist in the growing, worldwide movement #BlackLivesMatter. Today, Martese Johnson sent an email through the Bernie Sanders campaign, endorsing his racial justice platform, and thus his candidacy for President.

Earlier this year, I was violently slammed to the ground by three police officers near my college campus at the University of Virginia. At that moment I had no freedom, no autonomy and no say in what was happening to me. Many others who have been in a situation like mine did not live to tell the tale.

My encounter with police that night left me with cuts, bruises, and gashes — including a head injury that took 10 stitches to close. Why was I subjected to such violence when so many other students in similar circumstances were left alone?

It is way past time that we confront the epidemic of police brutality in this country which disproportionately affects people of color. Bernie Sanders released a racial justice plan which will do this, and more.

Click here to say you support Bernie's plan to address the structural inequalities and institutional barriers faced by people of color.

Growing up on the South Side of Chicago, I know firsthand how law enforcement officials treat black people and members of low-income communities. When the officers stopped me in Charlottesville, they did not see a University of Virginia student out with his peers. They saw a young black male with a high-top fade, a gold chain, some tennis shoes, and a hoodie.

I grew up with the belief that education and success would be my sanctuary. But there are no suits I can wear, words I can say, or achievements I can earn that will eliminate the centuries of fear and propaganda that have told this nation and the world that people who look like me are inherently a threat.

Yet I am determined to be the first in my family to graduate successfully from a four-year university, and I believe that this generation of Americans can take proactive steps in our communities to create a country that is safe and welcoming towards all people.

Bernie's racial justice plan is based on the five types of violence waged against people of color: physical, political, legal, economic and environmental. Add your name to stand with Bernie and support his racial justice plan.

Physical violence in the form of police brutality and racist acts of terrorism must come to an end. We should look closely at how and whom we recruit to become law enforcement officers, while also maintaining positive and transparent relations between police departments and the communities they serve.

The political disenfranchisement of people of color through voter suppression and lost voting rights is unacceptable. We must restore voting rights for those who have served time in prison, as well as make it easier to vote by declaring Election Day a federal holiday and automatically registering citizens to vote when they turn 18.

Legal violence against people of color is perpetuated by implicit bias, an unfair criminal justice system and a for-profit prison system. Some steps we can take include eliminating mandatory minimum sentences, investing in resources to medical and mental health interventions for those with substance abuse issues, and creating opportunities for formerly incarcerated people to find work and reintegrate into society after they have served their time.

The stark levels of income and wealth inequality are evidence of the economic violence that many experience each day. We must grant all people the ability to support their families and make ends meet. Bernie's plan will do this by supporting pay equity for women, tuition-free public universities, and a federally-funded jobs program to grant employment opportunities to young people of color.

Lastly, it is communities of color that are all too often exposed to the harmful effects of pollution and climate change. We must advance environmental justice by creating renewable energy systems, adopting cleaner manufacturing processes, and ensuring that all people can live in areas that are not contaminated by chemicals, pesticides or other toxins.

Bernie's racial justice plan is a crucial step towards confronting the structural inequalities that still exist in our country. As long as innocent civilians continue to be abused or murdered at the hands of police, we must strive to do better.

While I am one of many people who have become victims of police brutality, it is important that we acknowledge the many other ways in which people of color experience discrimination each day. By adopting Bernie's comprehensive approach to achieving racial justice, we can create a society where all people are treated with dignity and respect.

Add your name today to say you support Bernie's racial justice plan.

Thank you for standing with Bernie on this important issue.

Martese Johnson

Martese joins an increasing number of BlackLivesMatter activists whom have voiced their interest in Bernie Sanders’ racial justice platform, including former DailyKOS writer Shaun King. Shaun, while not having made a public endorsement yet, has been critical of Secretary Clinton and has complimented Sanders frequently on his Twitter.
