GOP Family Values Alert: Florida GOP Mike Horner RESIGNS Amidst Prostitution Case SCANDAL

Representative Mike Horne (R-Kissimmee) : A Family Values Republican

If you were wondering why Representative Mike Horner (R-Kissimmee) took down his campaign website, it’s because he’s been named as a “client” in a racketeering and prostitution case against Mark Risner, who is accused of running a brothel out of his home.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that Horner has not been charged or arrested. Rather, he is named as “a client in a racketeering and prostitution-related case, according to a law-enforcement source.” Horner may end up as a witness in the case.

The married Horner is known around town as a guy who pitches in and helps out.
A Baptist, he has a young son and is the president of the Kissimmee/Osceola Chamber of Commerce.

Rumors were swirling that Horner’s down campaign site meant he might resign, while others suggested it was a name mix up with a porn star who shares the same name as the Republican. Wikipedia says Mike Horner shares his name with the male porn star, and the Miami New Times suggests that Mike Horner the porn star once played a Bill O’Reilly-like character in a Sarah Palin porno.
Not to worry, it was the Mike Horner and he has resigned this morning. Horner’s statement reads:

I deeply regret decisions I made that are causing my family unjustifiable pain and embarrassment. While current press accounts from this morning are erroneous, my family still deserves better from me, as do all my friends, supporters and constituents.
So today, I am announcing I will no longer seek reelection to the Florida House.

I’ve had no greater honor than serving the people of Florida, but I have no greater priority than doing the right thing for my family. I pray to have the chance to earn back their trust and respect during the remainder
of my life.

OBAMA Nominates Openly Gay Judge Michael McShane For Federal Court

Human Rights Commission Law Fellow Ian Wilhite reported that Judge Michael McShane, a Multnomah County Circuit Judge, was nominated by President Obama on September 19th for a seat on Oregon’s Federal District Court. McShane would be moving into the seat vacated by Michael R. Hogan, one of two U.S. district judge posts in Eugene, Oregon, who has moved to senior status. If McShane is confirmed, he will be the first openly gay federal judge in Oregon.

Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden both support McShane’s nomination. Senator Merkley said, “Widely known for his service to the community, [McShane] has made Oregon a better place.” Senator Wyden noted that McShane is an “excellent choice” and that his “background as a judge, a public defender and adjunct law professor makes this a well-earned appointment that I believe deserves quick confirmation by the Senate”.

Aimee Green at The Oregonian notes that both Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schrunk and Clackamas County District Attorney John Foote have written a personal letters of recommendation for his nomination, even though McShane is a former public defender who might have squared off against Schrunk and Foote before. Green explains:

The job would be a lifetime appointment and [McShane] would take on larger constitutional questions than he does now, including free speech, government search and seizure powers, the Endangered Species Act and more.

When he heard his nomination had been announced, McShane beamed and accepted congratulations from attorneys in his courtroom. But he declined comment, noting that he hasn’t been confirmed yet.

McShane spent nearly a decade representing indigent criminal clients as a public defender at the Office of the Metropolitan Public Defender in Portland and worked as a judge pro tempore from 1997 to 2001 before becoming a judge in Multnomah County Circuit Court. He has processed one of the highest volumes of cases in the courthouse — easily a few hundred a month.

Multnomah County Circuit Judge Eric Bergstrom said he thinks McShane has presided over more death penalty cases than another other judge in the state. Bergstrom said both prosecutors and defense attorneys seek out McShane to handle their cases. “I think it speaks volumes that a former public defender is admired by the DA’s office,” Bergstrom said.

Australian Treasurer Wayne Swan Calls GOP ' CRANKS & CRAZIES

It's been a tough week for Mitt Romney and the Republicans. His campaign has been downplaying comments he made about Obama supporters being ovelry dependent on the government. And now this... just weeks from the November election, his party is getting criticised from the other side of the planet. Australian Treasurer Wayne Swan said Friday the biggest hazard to the world's economy is the fact that the GOP has been hijacked by extremists. (SOUNDBITE) (English) AUSTRALIAN TREASURER WAYNE SWAN SAYING:

"Let's be blunt and acknowledge the biggest threat to the world's biggest economy are the cranks and crazies that have taken over a part of the Republican Party." (SOUNDBITE) (English) AUSTRALIAN TREASURER WAYNE SWAN SAYING: "Despite President Obama's goodwill and strong efforts, the national interest there was held hostage by the rise of the extreme Tea Party wing of the Republican Party. There can be few things more alarming in public policy than a political movement which was genuinely prepared to see the government of the United States default on its obligations in order to score a political point."

Its hard to say how Swan's remarks may or may not hurt the Governor come election time. There are about 6 million Americans living abroad.

Obama Campaign Calls On Romney To RELEASE FULL 20 YEARS, Not Just Summary

I don't think anybody is really sure why Mitt Romney decided to reveal his average effective tax rate over the past 20 years, but one thing is for sure: it's given the Obama campaign an opportunity to release a statement questioning why he won't release the raw tax returns and calling on him to open the books:

STATEMENT: Romney Pays Lower Rate than Middle Class, Hides Wealth and Income

Chicago, IL—Obama for America released the following statement from Deputy Campaign Manager Stephanie Cutter on Mitt Romney’s 2011 tax returns:

“Today’s release of Mitt Romney’s 2011 tax returns confirms what we already knew – that people like Mitt Romney pay a lower tax rate than many middle class families because of a set of complex loopholes and tax shelters only available to those at the top," she said in a statement. "Yet, Mitt Romney still wants to give multi-millionaires an additional $250,000 tax cut at the expense of middle class taxpayers who will see their taxes go up."

Cutter added that Romney still had not released any tax returns from before 2010, despite disclosing about one page of details on his effective tax rates from 1990-2009 on Friday.

"While the tax return for the one year released today continues to mask Romney’s true wealth and income from Bain Capital, leaving the American people in the dark about critical details about his finances, it does confirm that he continues to profit from millions of dollars invested overseas," Cutter said. "These types of investments, the use of tax loopholes, and the resort to foreign blocker corporations enabling him to reduce his U.S. tax obligations, all raise basic and still unanswered question – why does Mitt Romney not just release the full returns , instead of the bare summary he has provided of the last 20 years, so voters can make their own judgments about Mitt Romney’s finances? As Mitt Romney’s father said, candidates should release several years of returns, because one year could be a fluke. President Obama, Vice President Biden and nearly every other candidate in recent memory has met that test, but Mitt Romney continues to fail it.”

As even GOP strategists have conceded, Romney's strategy of releasing some of the information about the past 20 years but not all of it is sort of like saying he's "a little bit pregnant," raising more questions than it answers.

Queen Ann Romney: "The CHATTERING CLASS"

Ann Romney lashed out at Republican critics of her husband in two media appearances on Thursday, telling them to "stop it." Wow, Ann, multiple media appearances on the same day? I guess that tough day after Mittens was caught on video revealing how he really feels about us regular Americans is just dragging on, and on.

First, during a sit-down interview with CBS 58 in Milwaukee, Mrs. Romney was asked about the second-guessing within the GOP camp over the campaign.

"You know there is always sniping and everyone always thinks they are the best critic, and they know this and they know that," she said. "And you know what? It is really amazing to me that people forget that what this election really is about is the economy."

Neither of the Romneys seem to be able to control their snobbery.

"Stop it. This is hard. You want to try it? Get in the ring,” she said. “This is hard and, you know, it’s an important thing that we’re doing right now and it’s an important election and it is time for all Americans to realize how significant this election is and how lucky we are to have someone with Mitt’s qualifications and experience and know-how to be able to have the opportunity to run this country.”...

...“It’s nonsense and the chattering class…you hear it and then you just let it go right by,” she told Radio Iowa. “…Honestly, at this point, I’m not surprised by anything.”

[div class="excerpt"

THE CHATTERING CLASS

]The chattering classes is a generally derogatory[1] term first coined by Auberon Waugh[2] often used by pundits and political commentators to refer to a politically active, socially concerned and highly educated section of the "metropolitan middle class,"[1] especially those with political, media, and academic connections. It is sometimes used to refer to a liberal elite, but its first use by British right wing polemicist Frank Johnson in 1980 appeared to include a wider range of pundits.[1] Indeed, the term is used by people all across the political spectrum to refer to the journalists and political operatives who see themselves as the arbiters of conventional wisdom.[3] As such, the notion of 'chattering classes' can be seen as an antonym to the older idea of an unrepresented Silent Majority (made famous by the U.S. Republican President Richard Nixon).

In the United States, the term has come to be used by both the right and left to describe political opponents, with Stephen Perrault of the Merriam-Webster dictionary suggesting that the term has "connotations of idleness, of useless talk, that the noun 'chatter' does. [...] These people don't amount to much — they like to hear themselves talk."

MORMONS Want To Excommunicate Romney CRITIC

After writing negative articles about the Republican candidate, the managing editor of MormonThink.com says he faces excommunication. Is the Church on a witch hunt? Jamie Reno reports.

“..The public should be aware of what is happening within the walls of the Mormon church to those that dissent during this ‘Mormon Moment’,..” Twede says.

David Twede, 47, a scientist, novelist, and fifth-generation Mormon, is managing editor of MormonThink.com, an online magazine produced largely by members of the Mormon Church that welcomes scholarly debate about the religion’s history from both critics and true believers. A Mormon in good standing, Twede has never been disciplined by Latter Day Saints leadership. But it now appears his days as a Mormon may be numbered because of a series of articles he wrote this past week that were critical of Mitt Romney. On Sunday, Twede says his bishop, stake president, and two church executives brought him into Florida Mormon church offices in Orlando and interrogated him for nearly an hour about his writings, telling him, "Cease and desist, Brother Twede."

- The four church leaders verbally chastised him, he says, for hiding his identity on MormonThink and his personal blog in order to avoid discipline. Twede, who writes using only his first name, says they kept asking him why he didn’t identify himself online if he had nothing to hide. “I told them I hide my name precisely because of things like this,” he says. “I said, ‘Look how fast you got to me.’ I know a lot of members don’t want their life disturbed. In the Mormon church, if you’re not part of the uniform group, you are ostracized.” Twede asked church leaders how they came up with his name so fast after posting the articles. They wouldn't tell him, but he says he’s since been told by a church insider that a contributor to the pro-Mormon Foundation for Apologetic Information and Research, many of whose members are professors at Brigham Young University, alerted church officials in Salt Lake City, who apparently informed his local ecclesiastical leaders.

- “When they interrogated me, they denied that they were on a witch hunt, but they kept asking me, ‘Who are the other individuals you work with on MormonThink?’” he says. “They continued demanding that I tell them. But I didn’t.” Twede's situation was first publicly disclosed this week on an ex-Mormon online discussion site by Steve Benson, the Pulitzer Prize–winning editorial cartoonist for The Arizona Republic and grandson of former secretary of agriculture and Mormon prophet Ezra Taft Benson. Benson, who left Mormonism in 1993, the same year he won the Pulitzer, is now a vocal critic of the church and is an active voice on the ex-Mormon sites.

- Then last week he posted several stories about the political history of LDS and how the church may or may not influence Romney, as well as a few blog posts that were tongue-in-cheek takes on the church. And that was apparently all it took for church leaders to intervene. “When they brought me into the office, they told me they were upset by the way I had portrayed myself,” he says. “They didn't like that I was writing a blog critical of the church, and they were upset by the fact that I was discussing the temple, which is connected to Mitt Romney in my article. I revealed things about the temple, and secrecy, and other things that they just don’t want anyone to talk about.”

BWHAHAHAHA: Romney Makes Himself EXTRA-BROWN For Univision Audience

Still recovering from his Monty Burns-esque “47 percent“ comments, Mitt Romney will do nearly anything to once convince voters that he’s really just a man with no core.

Last night, Señor Captain Capitalist was in Miami at a Univision sponsored meet-the-presidential-candidate forum where he spoke about immigration issue (he opposes Dream Act, previously called for “self deportation“, and has nada support among Latinos), all in hopes of distracting from his comments to 47 percent of America. But there was one very noticeable and horrifyingly distracting thing about Romney: his face looked like he just bathed in a low-budget Boehner bronzer.

Romney, who looked like a hybrid of the melting tanning woman from Something About Mary and if John Boehner was thrown into an industrial dryer and set to hot, was I guess trying to convey that the one percent can be tan too. Of course, the only time Romney ever appears tan is when he’s making a trip to the island states to pick up his money.

See the photos of a Tantastic Romney and you be the judge if whether he’s using Lindsey Lohan’s bronzer to look more Latino:

LOL ABANDON SHIP: Tommy Thompson: It’s MITT'S FAULT I'm Losing

The most recent polling in Wisconsin shows that Republican former Gov. Tommy Thompson has fallen behind Democratic opponent Tammy Baldwin in the race for Senate. Thompson’s explanation? Mitt Romney’s also been flailing.

“The presidential thing is bound to have an impact on every election,” Thompson told WKOW in Madison Wednesday. “You know, whether you’re a Democrat or Republican. If you’re a standard-bearer for the presidency is not doing well, it’s going to reflect on the down ballot.”

The poll was out from Marquette University Law School, and showed that Baldwin is leading Thompson, the former governor, by 9 points. Last month, another poll from MULS showed Thompson ahead by 9 points.
