Feed a cold or starve a cold?

We have sick people in this household and it brings me back to this argument I hear every cold/flu season. Some say it's best to eat while sick, or does digestion simply divert energy from fighting of illness?

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan's car window smashed during event

(01-28) 19:16 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- Vandals smashed the back window of Oakland Mayor Jean Quan's car Monday night while she was speaking at a community meeting in the Oakland hills.

Nothing was taken from Quan's car, said mayor's office spokesman Sean Maher, and it isn't clear if it was a break-in attempt or random act of vandalism. There's no indication Quan was targeted while she was meeting with constituents at the Chabot Space and Science Center, Maher said. This is not the first time Quan has been the victim of a crime. In 2010, when she was a member of the City Council and running for mayor, a man grabbed her purse as she was getting ready to walk into a supermarket on Fruitvale Avenue in the city's Dimond neighborhood.

Quan was on her way to buy milk when the man came up behind her and yanked on her purse, Quan said at the time. She "instinctively" pulled back and screamed, she said, "Take the money - leave me my ID!"

The man fled with the purse but fell in the parking lot, spilling most of Quan's belongings, including her car keys. Quan briefly chased after the man, she and police said at the time, and obtained a partial license plate.

Dkos: Where is Cathy McMorris Rodgers' ObamaCare victim 'Bette in Spokane'?

We have limited information about Bette - she is a woman who lives in Spokane, Washington - but that's enough to do some research. We don't know her age, so I used the worst-case (for premiums) of 64, and while we don't know her marital/family status, the statement offered was 'her premiums' so I'll first look at her cost as a single 64-year-old woman living in Spokane.

We now know enough to state that this claim makes no sense at all. If Bette is single, she can get a Gold plan for less than $700, and if she's married she would have to have been paying less than $136 per month for health insurance for 2 64-year-old people on the individual market - an obvious impossibility.
I ran the worst-case scenario: 64, no subsidy. What happens when parameters change?

Younger? Rates go down. At age 44, Bette pays $194/mo. for the same AmBetter Bronze policy in the first graphic above.

Lower income? Below $46,000/yr, a subsidy of at least $250/mo kicks in. And if Bette is married, look what happens to that subsidy at $62,000/yr income

So this claim just doesn't make sense no matter how hard I work the numbers. I suspect Politico would award it some Pinochios!

One other possibility is that Bette was one of about 8,000 Washington residents who, early in October, were given incorrect expected premium amounts due to a faulty calculator on the Washington Obamacare exchange web-site.

Grimm issues statement on tonight's threat against reporter.

Rep. Michael Grimm, the Staten Island Republican, has released a statement about tonight's incident in the Capitol in which he reportedly told a NY1 reporter, among other things: "I'll break you in half. Like a boy." Here's the statement, according to NY1:

I was extremely annoyed because I was doing NY1 a favor by rushing to do their interview first in lieu of several other requests. The reporter knew that I was in a hurry and was only there to comment on the State of the Union, but insisted on taking a disrespectful and cheap shot at the end of the interview, because I did not have time to speak off-topic. I verbally took the reporter to task and told him off, because I expect a certain level of professionalism and respect, especially when I go out of my way to do that reporter a favor. I doubt that I am the first Member of Congress to tell off a reporter, and I am sure I won’t be the last.

I'm not upset with the president for honoring that soldier.

After all, this is someone Obama met prior to the injury. What makes me nauseous is the roomful of vultures wearing suits and uniforms applauding him after they ruined his life with 10 deployments.

Obama touched on something I'm going through this very moment.

My kid is sick with a nasty fever and I'm stressing over the shitpile of work that's growing on my desk. But thank God I live in a time when I can at least take time off this week to care of him and have a job to go back to and also be paid.

Guess what Christie got in exchange for the $6 million in Sandy money.

BellevilleSentinel wrote:

The real story here is not the Senior Housing complex but the 19 acre Roche property sitting across the street from the same and next to the Clara Maass Medical Center. Within 2 weeks of Christie's appearance in Belleville and the presentation of the check to Kimble, the Roche property was given status as an "area in need of redevelopment". This gave Kimble, et.al., advised by the township's attorney, sweeping powers over the property including choosing its developer without a competitive bidding process and which was given to none other than David Mack. David Mack is a close friend of Christie and a former Port Authority commissioner. Furthermore, his company was apparently denied from developing the Harbor Lights project in Fort Lee on the part of Mayor Sokolich, which many investigators now believe is the reason why that town's GWB access lanes were punitively shutdown last September.

I hope the investigation commission led by Assemblyman Wisniewski and Senator Weinberg include the scope of their investigation to include the Christie-Kimble-Mack matter.
