Gabbard accuses Hirono, Democratic colleagues of religious bigotry

Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard took aim at Democratic colleagues, including U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono, accusing them of religious bigotry in their questioning of Brian Buescher, a nominee to the U.S. District Court of Nebraska, in an opinion piece published by The Hill yesterday.

Such a schism in Hawaii’s Democratic congressional delegation is highly unusual. Hirono’s office wasn’t told of the piece before it ran. In a statement issued today, Hirono called Gabbard’s opinion misguided and suggested it was influenced by arguments advanced by “right-wing ideologues.”

“Senator Hirono, asks all judicial nominees – particularly those who have expressed very strong personal ideological views in conflict with Supreme Court precedent – if they can be fair. She asked Mr. Buescher, who has a clear record of anti-choice activism, whether or not he could separate his personal beliefs from decisions he would make if confirmed for a lifetime appointment on the federal bench,” said Will Dempster, a spokesman for Hirono, in a statement. “Over the past two years, the senator has been attacked by right wing ideologues for her examination of Donald Trump’s ideologically-driven nominees to the courts. It is unfortunate that Congresswoman Gabbard based her misguided opinion on the far-right wing manipulation of these straightforward questions.”

Gabbard’s opinion piece argues that for years “politicians have weaponized religion for their own selfish gain, fomenting bigotry, fears and suspicious based on the faith, religion or spiritual practices of their potential opponents.”

Samirah wins Democratic nomination for 86th House of Delegates District special election

Ibraheem Samirah today secured the Democratic nomination for the 86th House of Delegates District special election next month.

The seat is open due to Jennifer Boysko’s election to the 33rd District state Senate seat earlier this week.

Samirah, a dentist, defeated retired Army veteran Kofi Annan, public affairs consultant Chad Thompson, and lawyer and former Herndon Mayor Mike O’Reilly for the nomination.

“As your delegate I will make sure change comes to the 86th District and to Virginia as a whole,” Samirah said on Facebook.

Local Republicans have not yet announced their plans to nominate a candidate.

The special election will be held Feb. 19.

20 years of dramatic change: Dallas County's delegation reflects community's diversity

In 1999 the Dallas County delegation to the Texas Legislature was composed of mostly white men, with a few minorities from southern Dallas districts.

Twenty years later, the faces of the delegation are dramatically different.

Demographic shifts and a broader pool of Democratic and Republican candidates have led to a diversified delegation, making it more reflective of the county’s population.

On Tuesday, Dallas County lawmakers who took the oath of office included whites, African-Americans, Latinos, Asian-Americans and lesbians. At no time in the history of the county has the delegation had that sort of a mix.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hits out at 'disgusting' media publishing fake nude image

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the rapidly rising star of the Democratic party, has lashed out at conservative media for its treatment of women in leadership positions after the Daily Caller published a fake photo of the politician nude in a bath-tub.

The rightwing website published the image showing a woman’s bare feet in the bath, under the headline: “Here’s the photo some people described as a nude selfie of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez”. In fact, the photograph had been circulating on the internet already for a month and has been shown to have been falsely ascribed to the politician by a user on a Reddit forum.

Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter that the use of a discredited image by a prominent conservative outlet showed that “women in leadership face more scrutiny. Period.”

She said the actions of the Daily Caller were “just a matter of time” given that Republicans had been “frothing at the mouth all week” – a phrase that she did not explain. She also criticized the Daily Mail which she accused of sending a reporter “to my boyfriend’s relative’s homes” offering them cash for “stories”.

Captain Marvel GoFundMe Will Help Young Girls Get Free Tickets

Following the success of a prior campaign that raised more than $50,000 to help children see Black Panther in theaters, GoFundMe announced on Tuesday that it was launching a similar effort to send young girls to Marvel's first female-led film, Captain Marvel.

The #CaptainMarvelChallenge, a joint effort between the crowdfunding platform and Girls Inc. of Greater Los Angeles, looks to raise funds for the children's tickets, tickets for chaperones and refreshments for attending young girls. The campaign's goal is $10,000; any extra funds will go to funding programs for Girls Inc. of Greater Los Angeles as well as We Have Stories, a nonprofit grant and marketing agency that supports projects for marginalized communities.

The campaign was initially inspired by a tweet from Captain Marvel star Brie Larson in September following the success of the #BlackPantherChallenge, created by We Have Stories founder Frederick Joseph. "I feel like a #CaptainMarvelChallenge is in order...." Larson wrote in response to a teacher who said she had shown the 'Captain Marvel' trailer to her class.

Larson retweeted a We Have Stories tweet about the campaign on Tuesday.

“Captain Marvel is Marvel Studios’ first female-led film, and an important moment for representation. The lead character, Carol Danvers, is not only a superhero, she’s also an athlete and fighter pilot,” Joseph said in a statement. “She is a prime example of the fact that women can do anything, and there isn’t a better person to be playing her than Brie Larson, who has been one of the faces of numerous feminist movements such as Time's Up. I am inspired by Brie and women around the globe and look forward to sending as many girls as possible to see this film.”
