BREAKING: Court forces Ohio to allow most illegally purged voters to cast ballots

A federal district court ruled Wednesday night that Ohio must allow most of the voters illegally purged from the rolls to vote in this year’s presidential election using provisional ballots.

“ If those who were unlawfully removed from the voter rolls are not allowed to vote, then the Secretary of State is continuing to to disenfranchise voters in violation of federal law,” Judge George Smith warned.

Though the state’s Republican leaders had argued last week that they should only have to restore the voting rights of those purged last year and those who haven’t moved since they last registered to vote, the court’s order is much broader.

Now, anyone purged since 2011 as well as anyone who has moved within the same county will be able vote.

“Moving down the street shouldn’t mean someone’s vote is thrown away,” Mike Brickner with the American Civil Liberties Union told ThinkProgress.

Additionally, the state has to send notification to any purged voter who requested an absentee ballot that they may vote in person using a provisional ballot either early or on Election Day.

Poll: Battleground state voters give Clinton debate edge

Likely voters in 13 battleground states picked Hillary Clinton as the winner of the third and final presidential debate, according to a new poll.

Almost half, 49 percent, in the CBS News Battleground Tracker poll released Thursday morning said Clinton won the debate Wednesday night, compared to 39 percent who said Donald Trump was the winner.

Twelve percent called it a tie.

AZ Poll: Arpaio trailing 46-31.

PHOENIX – Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio trails his Democratic opponent Paul Penzone by almost 15 points, according to an Arizona Republic/Morrison/Cronkite News poll released Thursday.

The poll, taken from Oct. 10-15, shows that substantial percentages of registered Maricopa County and Arizona voters oppose building a border wall and deporting all undocumented immigrants, two immigration stances Arpaio has championed.

The poll reflects Arizona’s new status as a battleground state, with Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton leading Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump by five points.

According to the poll, 45.9 percent of registered voters in Maricopa County say they plan to vote for Penzone compared to the 31.1 percent who say they’ll vote for Arpaio.

NC: Record turnout expected for early voting in Wilmington area

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. -- Counties in the Cape Fear region are preparing for potentially record turnout as early voting in the contentious 2016 General Election gets underway Thursday.

New Hanover County Board of Elections officials are expecting 60,000 to 67,000 people to vote early this year across its five one-stop locations, said elections director Derek Bowens. The projection is a bold increase over previous presidential elections, including the 53,924 early votes cast in 2008 and 60,259 in 2012 -- which amounted to 59 percent of registered voters, Bowens said.

The trend for one-stop voting is up," Bowens said. "If it continues, as we expect it to do, we will see record turnout for one-stop voting this year."

Early voting in North Carolina was extended an extra week as part of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals decision in July, which also threw out many of the provisions in the state's voter registration law that were deemed to be discriminatory.
