Texas woman’s ex-boyfriend harassed her more than 140 times before shooting her dead

Investigators said the suspect went to Takita Mathieu’s workplace on Thursday afternoon and shot her before turning the gun on himself in an apparent murder-suicide attempt. However, he survived and was listed as being on life support as of Friday at a local hospital.

The Houston Chronicle reported that, according to witnesses, the suspect argued with Mathieu before the shooting. A semi-automatic pistol, believed to be the weapon, was found at the scene.

Mathieu had reportedly filed multiple complaints with the police about the suspect’s “erratic” behavior and harassment leading up to the shooting. Authorities said the man called her 140 times since she ended the relationship four months ago.

The victim’s cousin, Morris Williams, told KHOU that she was afraid to return to Houston after visiting family in Louisiana for Mardi Gras festivities.

Florida Man Got a Free Pass for Shooting a Pregnant Woman To Death

Katherine Hoover was five months pregnant when a man shot and killed her—and now a Florida prosecutor is refusing to press charges.
Katherine Hoover, five months pregnant with a boy she already knew as Rehlin, was eating McDonald’s at the DeHayes family kitchen table in Brooksville, Florida, as 35-year-old William DeHayes—an old friend of her new husband, Carson—showed off his collection of guns. First, he unstrapped the 9mm from his leg, then got out an old shotgun from the bedroom.

Moving on, DeHayes used a Western-style draw (“kinda like a cowboy would,” he later explained to police) to unholster an antique revolver that had belonged to his grandfather. DeHayes had been practicing gun slinging tricks he learned on YouTube—a hobby he picked up to give himself purpose after getting on permanent disability for back pain. “Something I can be proud of,” DeHayes said to investigators.

Carson gave the revolver a look and handed it back. DeHayes spun the gun again, put his finger on the trigger, and eased the hammer to put it back in the holster.

That’s when the gun fired. The single bullet—which DeHayes swears he never loaded—entered Katherine’s temple. The 25-year-old was rushed to the hospital, where she died soon after. Doctors delivered Rehlin via Caesarean section, but he died 30 minutes after his mother.

As Governor, Jeb! opposed the same drug treatment that his daughter got.

TALLAHASSEE -- Even as his daughter seeks treatment for a drug problem, Gov. Jeb Bush is gearing up opposition to a ballot measure that would steer Florida's nonviolent drug offenders into treatment instead of prison.

The proposed amendment to Florida's Constitution, called the Right to Treatment and Rehabilitation for Nonviolent Drug Offenses, hasn't yet made it through all the legal hurdles it needs to before it can appear before voters this fall.

But the Bush administration is so concerned about the measure that state officials started holding strategy meetings last fall at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to figure out how to defeat it. The measure would give certain first- and second-time drug offenders the right to treatment.

It wouldn't apply to people arrested for drug dealing or violent crime. In some cases, people who have histories of violence or drug dealing could get treatment instead of prison, as long as their conviction is at least 5 years old.

California bill would end all vaccination loopholes except medical

SACRAMENTO -- In a move that could give California one of the nation's toughest vaccine laws, two state senators Thursday introduced legislation that would eliminate most exemptions that allow parents to avoid requirements to vaccinate their children.

If enacted, California would join only two other states -- Mississippi and West Virginia -- that permit only medical exemptions as legitimate reasons to sidestep vaccinations.

The clamor around the elimination of the "personal belief exemption" has been growing in California since a measles outbreak started in mid-December, when 39 people who visited or worked at Disneyland contracted the virus.

Currently, California is one of 19 states that allow exemptions based purely on parents' personal or religious beliefs.

Question for those with both Traditional and Roth IRA's

I am not going to ask for advice, but I would lie to ask those of you who hold both Traditional and Roth IRA's whether you contribute to just one or both in a given year. Do you alternate?

A win for collective bargaining!! 2 Sides in West Coast Ports Dispute Reach Tentative Contract

Negotiators reached a tentative contract covering West Coast dockworkers on Friday evening, likely ending a protracted labor dispute that snarled international trade at seaports handling about $1 trillion worth of cargo annually.

The breakthrough came after nine months of negotiations that turned contentious in the fall, when dockworkers and their employers began blaming each other for problems getting imports to consumers and exports overseas.

The five-year deal, confirmed by International Longshore and Warehouse Union spokesman Craig Merrilees, still must be approved by the 13,000-member union's rank-and-file. They work 29 ports from San Diego to Seattle that handle about one-quarter of all U.S. international trade, much of it with Asia.

Negotiators for the union and the Pacific Maritime Association, which represents ocean-going shipping lines and the companies that load and unload cargo at terminals ports, began talking formally in May. Their prior six-year contract expired July 1.
