Democratic National Committee war plan: Target 50 million voters

WASHINGTON — Looking to harness anti-Donald Trump enthusiasm in what could be a banner year for Democrats, the Democratic National Committee will announce Wednesday that it's planning to contact 50 million voters before the November elections.

The DNC, which has struggled financially and faced doubts about its relevance, will focus its 2018 midterm elections organizing plans around partnerships with a wide range of groups aimed at boosting turnout among Democratic-leaning voters, who have been less likely to get to the polls in recent non-presidential elections.

In the most recent midterm elections in 2014, 47 million fewer people voted than did in 2012, when former President Barak Obama was on the ballot.

DNC Chairman Tom Perez said in a statement that the effort "translates activism and marches into committing to vote for Democrats up and down the ballot this November and is designed to reach voters and communities across the country with new innovative tools and technologies, key partnerships, and online and on-the-ground organizing strategies."

TX-SEN: CNN takes seat out of Solid Republican column

CNN)Beto O'Rourke is giving Ted Cruz a run for his money in the Texas Senate contest.

The Democratic underdog from El Paso outraised the first-term Republican senator and former presidential candidate by $1.5 million -- $2.3 million to $800,000 -- from the beginning of 2018 through mid-February. That impressive fundraising haul comes after O'Rourke also outpaced Cruz in the closing quarter of 2017, $2.4 million to $1.8 million.

Cruz still holds a clear advantage in the race. When it comes to cash on hand, Cruz leads O'Rourke by a little more than $1 million.
The Republican also has recent Texas electoral history on his side. Democrats haven't won a statewide election there since Bob Bullock's re-election as lieutenant governor in 1994. The last Democrat elected to the US Senate from Texas? Lloyd Bentsen in 1988.

For Democrats to have a chance at taking control of the Senate, they may have to make states like Texas competitive. Democrats -- or independents who caucus with them -- are defending 25 seats this year, while Republicans are defending just eight. The GOP has a 51-49 advantage at the moment.

More Trump Appointees Fail Background Checks

“Four Commerce Department political appointees working on interim security clearances lost their jobs Tuesday because of problems in their background checks, the latest fallout from the intensifying public scrutiny on administration officials working without permanent clearances,” the Washington Post reports.
