Tennessee bill would grant fathers veto power over abortion, allow establishment of paternity withou

In an effort to further restrict abortion in Tennessee, two Tennessee lawmakers have introduced legislation that would allow a father to deny an abortion without the pregnant woman's consent.

SB494/HB1079, sponsored by Sen. Mark Pody, R-Lebanon and Rep. Jerry Sexton, R-Bean Station, would give a man who gets a woman pregnant the veto power to an abortion by petitioning a court for an injunction against the procedure.

Tennessee lawmakers already passed one of the nation's most restrictive abortion laws last year, although much of it is held up with legal challenges from abortion rights advocates. The ongoing court battle could stretch for months if not years.

Despite the outlook for potential lawsuits, state lawmakers appear adamant in pushing for stricter abortion laws this legislative session. Including Pody and Sexton's legislation, six bills to further restrict abortion have been filed this year.

DeSantis threatens to divert vaccines from communities criticizing distribution

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Wednesday threatened to divert coronavirus vaccines from communities that criticize his distribution efforts.

DeSantis made the remarks at a news conference amid criticism that he arranged for seniors in two wealthy neighborhoods to be given priority vaccine access, The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

“If Manatee County doesn’t like us doing this, we are totally fine with putting this in counties that want it,” DeSantis said. “We’re totally happy to do that.”

The governor said that local officials should be grateful to receive extra doses and that otherwise he could send them elsewhere.

“If there’s going to be folks that are going to complain about getting more vaccines, you know, I’ll tell you what, I mean, I wouldn’t be complaining, I’d be thankful that we’re able to do it because, you know what, we didn’t need to do this at all,” DeSantis said.

VA-GOV: Major union that backed Biden in 2020 endorses Foy in Virginia governors race

Virginia gubernatorial candidate Jennifer Carroll Foy won the support of a major transit union that backed President Biden in the 2020 presidential race.

Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) endorsed Carroll Foy in a statement exclusively obtained by The Hill on Wednesday, pledging to register the union's members to vote and to take part "in the all-out effort to elect Jennifer Carroll Foy.”

“Jennifer Carroll Foy has been a true champion of working people throughout her career. She will fight to rebuild the middle class, bolster public transit, restore the rights of labor, and help Virginia recover from this devastating pandemic,” ATU International President John Costa said.

ATU made headlines last year in the 2020 presidential election when it endorsed Biden after throwing its support behind Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in 2016.

The union is the largest for transit workers in the commonwealth, representing transit employees in northern Virginia, Richmond, Lynchburg and Norfolk. ATU's Local 689, which also endorsed Foy, represents Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) workers.

Texas Mayor Quits After Saying 'No One Owes You Anything'

The mayor of a West Texas town said Tuesday that he had already resigned after he was widely condemned for writing on Facebook that people suffering in the cold without power shouldn’t look to their local governments for help.

Tim Boyd, who was mayor of Colorado City, made his original, typo-ridden post Tuesday morning, writing that “no one owes you are your family anything; nor is it the local government’s responsibility to support you during trying times like this! … The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING!”

Boyd continued at length, saying that he was “sick and tired” of people looking for handouts and that the current situation is “sadly a product of a socialist government.”

“Only the strong will survive and the weak will parish,” he wrote.

The post is no longer available, but numerous screenshots show it and a follow-up post he made several hours later in which he said he stood by the sentiments in his first missive but would have either kept his mouth shut or phrased his message better if he could do things over.

“I would never want to hurt the elderly or anyone that is in true need of help to be left to fend for themselves,” Boyd said. “I was only making the statement that those folks that are too lazy to get up and fend for themselves but are capable should not be dealt a handout.”
