Patricia Guerrero becomes first Latina confirmed to California Supreme Court

Judge Patricia Guerrero was confirmed to the California Supreme Court on Tuesday, becoming the first Latina to serve on the court.

Following the 3-0 vote of the Commission on Judicial Appointments, Guerrero is set to be sworn in on Monday by California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), according to NBC News.

“As I’ve tried to express, this is not just about me, or really even just about my parents, but it’s about so many others just like us,” Guerrero, the child of Mexican immigrants, said, according to the outlet. “This is a story of the American dream, the belief that with hard work, perseverance and opportunities, anything is possible. And for that I am thankful.”

The 50-year-old justice, who previously served as a San Diego appeals court judge, is replacing Associate Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar, who stepped down from the bench last year. Cuéllar left the court to serve as president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, NBC reported.

Republicans Look to Flip Manchin on SCOTUS Vote

“Republicans know that they cannot unilaterally block Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson from confirmation if Democrats unite to support President Biden’s nominee in the 50-50 Senate,” the New York Times reports.

“But some of them are working to pick off votes for her in the president’s party, focusing in particular on Senator Joe Manchin III of West Virginia, the centrist Democrat who has broken ranks on major issues and whose state is solidly conservative.”

Russian athlete set to lose Olympic gold medal over doping.

Russian race walker Elena Lashmanova, the 2012 Olympic champion, has been banned for two years for doping and is set to lose her gold medal, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) said Monday.
The 29-year-old won the 20km gold medal at the London Olympics and will also be stripped of her 2013 world championship title.

“Lashmanova has accepted the sanction proposed by the AIU,” the AIU said in a statement.

Lashmanova had already been suspended for two years in 2014 for doping, although that did not affect her previous medals.

US announces new sanctions on Chinese officials over 'repressive acts'

The Department of State announced on Monday it would sanction some Chinese officials over what it call "repressive acts" against members of ethnic and religious groups, including those in the U.S.

“The United States rejects efforts by PRC officials to harass, intimidate, surveil, and abduct members of ethnic and religious minority groups, including those who seek safety abroad, and U.S. citizens, who speak out on behalf of these vulnerable populations,” the department said in a statement. "We are committed to defending human rights around the world and will continue to use all diplomatic and economic measures to promote accountability.”

The State Department said it would impose visa restrictions on Chinese officials it said are believed to be responsible for "policies or actions aimed at repressing religious and spiritual practitioners, members of ethnic minority groups, dissidents, human rights defenders, journalists, labor organizers, civil society organizers, and peaceful protestors in China and beyond.

The Department called on China to "cease its acts of transnational repression" that includes silencing Uyghur American activists and other Uyghur individuals "serving the American people by denying exit permission to their family members in China."
