Sierra LaMar Trial Verdict to be read in court Tuesday morning

SAN JOSE — The jury has reached a verdict in the murder trial of the man accused of killing missing teen Sierra LaMar, who disappeared five years ago from a rural community north of Morgan Hill while on her way to her school bus stop.

The verdict, which will be read in Santa Clara County Superior Court at 9 am Tuesday, comes after the jury began mid-day Thursday and follows a trial that lasted more than three months. The jury only met for a half day Friday, meaning it reached consensus in just under two full days.

Antolin Garcia-Torres, 26, has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder and three counts of trying to kidnap and carjack three women in 2009 as they returned to their cars late at night in Morgan Hill supermarket parking lots.

If the jury convicts him of first-degree murder, the same panel would then weigh whether he should be sentenced to life without parole or death, after hearing evidence from both the prosecution and the defense.

Saw Guardians of the Galaxy 2 this weekend. (No Spoilers)

In 2014, I danced in my seat to "Hooked on a Feeling" and in 2017 I danced to "Come a Little Bit Closer". And while nothing can match watching those a-holes the first time, Guardians 2 was a better overall movie that expanded the Marvel cosmic universe. Standouts among the cast were Kurt Russel (Ego), Zoe Saldana (Gamora) and Michael Rooker (Yondu). If I have one regret, it's that we did not yet get to see Adam Warlock.

Pepe the Frog Is Dead: Creator Kills the White Supremacist-Hijacked Icon

After fighting an uphill battle to reclaim the feel-good image of his popular character after it was perverted by a culture of hate, cartoonist Matt Furie laid to rest Pepe the Frog in Fantagraphics’ Free Comic Book Day offering, “World’s Greatest Cartoonists.” In a one-page strip, Pepe lies in an open casket while “Boy’s Club” friends Landwolf, Brett and Andy mourn him in their irreverent fashion.

Furie debuted Pepe and the “Boy’s Club” characters on his MySpace blog in 2005 and published four issues of the crew’s adventures through Buenaventura Press, stories that were collected into a single volume by Fantagraphics in 2016. Pepe, as seen in “Boy’s Club,” is a mellow dude getting stoned with his friends, regularly engaging in gross-out humor. But more recently, Pepe has been adopted as an icon and mascot by the extreme conservative “alt-right” movement, and as memes showing the chill frog promoting white nationalist and anti-semitic messages graduated from 4chan and Reddit into the mainstream, the Anti-Defamation League last year designated Pepe a hate symbol.

Pepe had starred in more innocent memes for years, his “Feels good, man” mantra applicable to all manner of situations. But as detailed by the Daily Beast, this began to change in 2015 thanks to a coordinated campaign on a subversive corner of 4chan. A self-identified white nationalist told the Daily Beast that, “We basically mixed Pepe in with Nazi propaganda, etc. We built that association.” When, later, Pepe was used in images promoting Donald Trump’s bid for the presidency, the memes served both as a coded message to the “alt-right” subculture and, through exposure of their version of Pepe to mainstream audiences, an amplification of the group’s more extreme content.

Jared Kushners sister offers U.S. visas to Chinese investors for familys real estate development

Jared Kushner’s sister offered wealthy investors in China a chance to score American visas if they invest in one of the family’s properties — a deal that watchdogs saw as blatant bribery.

Nicole Kushner Meyer took the stage at a Ritz-Carlton hotel in Beijing on Saturday with a pitch to a room with about 100 investors: They could get green cards if they poured money into One Journal Square, a $150 million luxury Jersey City development from her family.

The quid-pro-quo would come through the EB-5 program, which grants visas to foreigners who invest at least $500,000 in American development projects. Politicians on both sides of the aisle have often criticized the program as a golden road to citizenship for the wealthy.

According to multiple media reports from the event, parts of Meyer’s talk touted her ties to President Trump through her brother, who is married to Trump’s daughter Ivanka.

One slide in her sales pitch pictured Trump and identified him as a “key decision maker” for the EB-5 program. She also made sure to mention her brother’s role as a senior advisor to Trump.

Meyer told the crowd the Jersey City project “means a lot to me and my entire family,” according to the New York Times. A brochure for the event told those in attendance: “Invest $500,000 and immigrate to the United States.”
