The daughter of the second-most powerful Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives has announced she is gay.
Stefany Hoyer Hemmer, whose father, House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, recently endorsed marriage equality, came out publicly as a lesbian this week in the hope of bolstering support for gay marriage in her home state of Maryland, which is shaping up as a national battleground for same-sex nuptials.
My father, as you know, just came out in support of gay marriage, Hemmer told the Washington Blade. Im 43 years of age, and Ive been gay my whole life and I just figured this is a good time to lend my name to the cause.
The momentum in Maryland right now for the adoption of the gay marriage law is fast-paced, she added.

Three things every kid does to scare you to death..
1. Cut across a typically busy road or street.
2. Choke on something.
3. Lose themselves in a store.
Mine has done all three. Have any more to share?
Bay Area Man Severs His Own Penis With X-Acto Knife
We've heard of angry women cutting off their man's penis, but a man has to be really upset about something to castrate himself.
According to press reports, Fremont officers were called to the 4300 block of Mowry Avenue about 2 a.m Wednesday after a 20-year-old man had cut off his penis with an X-Acto knife.
Much to our surprise, the victim was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Detective Bill Veteran said, yet we still have no idea what motivated the man to sever his private part.
Police were able to locate the man's penis, and doctors are working to reattach the organ.

California cigarette tax narrowly leading.
(06-05) 21:00 PDT San Francisco -- Tobacco companies poured nearly $47 million into defeating Proposition 29, a $1-a-pack tax hike on cigarettes, but the measure was narrowly leading in early returns Tuesday despite the hard-fought campaign.
The tax increase would raise $810 million a year for cancer research and smoking cessation programs, and it would give California - which currently has a lower tobacco tax than 32 other states - the 16th-highest cigarette tax in the nation.
It is the second time in six years that voters were asked to increase the state's current 87-cent-a-pack tax; in 2006, a similar hike was defeated at the ballot box.
The vote would be a huge win for the public health groups that sponsored the measure, including the American Cancer Society. They have repeatedly tried - and failed - to persuade lawmakers to raise the tax on tobacco products, said the group's California vice president, Jim Knox. Those groups raised about $11.2 million for the campaign.

Now even the Miss USA pageant has gone political.
In a resignation announcement brimming with indignation, this years Miss Pennsylvania USA said she felt compelled to turn in her crown.
Monnin, 27, alleged that Sundays Miss USA competition, which is run by the Miss Universe Organization, was fixed. She said she had evidence that the top five contestants were selected in advance of Sundays show.
Pageant officials released an email message they said they received from Monnin on Monday that read, I refuse to be part of a pageant system that has so far and so completely removed itself from its foundational principles as to allow and support natural born males to compete in it. This goes against ever (sic) moral fiber of my being.
On her Facebook page, Monnin describes herself as conservative and sums up her religious views by citing the Bible verse John 3:16.

Another CA public school student driven out by bullying.
VALLEJO (CBS13) A girls mother says her bullied daughter will not return her school in the Vallejo School District, where parents say bullying is an ongoing problem.
Its still very difficult for 12-year-old Makiya Howell to talk about the attack.
She was trapped in the girls bathroom at Solano Middle School, surrounded by more than a dozen girls two weeks ago, and being punched and kicked while a classmate captures the attack on her cell phone.
If I didnt get out of that bathroom theyre really going to try and hurt me, said Howell.
Shes been bullied all year about her appearance.

It's official: We will be Catholic school parents in August. Any advice?
It's an entirely different world for us. It's an "independent" Catholic school that it's tied to a specific church. It also forgoes hellfire and brimstone and emphasizes social justice and the Virtues and requires community service. But I would still welcome any advice other Catholic school parents have to share. In the meantime, I will try and recover from the uniform sticker shock.
