Steve Bannon hired NYC mayoral hopeful Bo Dietl to investigate his ex-wife

Mayoral hopeful Bo Dietl has a dubious connection with chief White House strategist Steve Bannon, who hired the former cop and private investigator to dig up dirt on his ex-wife, according to a report.

Bannon was once accused of roughing up his wife during a heated early-morning argument at his California home, a charge that earned him the wrath of women’s groups opposed to his White House appointment.

According to the New York Times, Bannon hired Dietl to help him out of the jam, one of several connections that could damage Dietl’s standing among women voters.

Dietl’s firm was also hired to spy on Gretchen Carlson and Andrea Tantaros, a pair of Fox News personalities who accused then-chairman Roger Ailes of sexual harassment.

While critics said Dietl’s involvement in both cases were just ways for him to attack women, Dietl said he was just doing his job.

Istanbul police enforce ban on gay, transgender pride march

(Reuters) - Turkish police deployed in central Istanbul on Sunday to enforce a ban on the city's annual gay and transgender pride march, blocking off a main street and dispersing groups of demonstrators who gathered nearby.

Police with riot shields and helmets sealed off entrances to Istiklal Street, where organizers had planned to hold the march before authorities announced the ban on Saturday, citing security concerns after threats from an ultra-nationalist group.

Monterey at 50: When rock festivals were born

Simon and Garfunkel helped launch the SUMMER OF LOVE at the Monterey International Pop Festival back in 1967. Its vibe is still being felt half a century later. Anthony Mason takes us to Monterey, then and now:

At the fairgrounds in Monterey, California this weekend, just down the coast from San Francisco, the Monterey International Pop Festival is celebrating its rock ancestor -- the festival that gave birth to rock festivals.

Fifty years ago this weekend, the first Monterey Pop, with its slogan of "Music, Love and Flowers," rang the opening bell for the "Summer of Love."

Monterey would be the breakout moment for Jimi Hendrix, playing his first American show with the Experience; for Janis Joplin, then almost unknown outside San Francisco; and for Otis Redding, who'd never played for a white audience.

The festival was organized by John Phillips, leader of The Mamas and The Papas, and his manager and producer, Lou Adler. The shows sold out every day. "Everything was full; there were people standing along the fences," said Adler.

Northbound I-680 closed in Milpitas due to police activity

MILPITAS, Calif. -- All lanes of northbound I-680 have been closed Monday afternoon in Milpitas due to police activity and traffic is backed up in both directions.

The closure was reported at 4:42 p.m. on the highway south of state Highway 237 and West Calaveras Boulevard, according to CHP officials.

The CHP did not elaborate about the police activity and did not provide an estimated time for when the northbound lanes would reopen.

Cars are being detoured off the freeway at the Landess Ave. and Montague Expy. exit.

This is all because someone is reportedly threatening to jump from an overpass.

Memo Shows Nixon White House Plotted Violence

Watergate prosecutors had evidence that operatives for then-President Richard Nixon planned an assault on anti-war demonstrators in 1972, including potentially physically attacking Vietnam whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg,” according to a never-before-published memo obtained by NBC News.

“The document, an 18-page 1973 investigative memorandum from the Watergate Special Prosecution Force, sheds new light on how prosecutors were investigating attempts at domestic political violence by Nixon aides, an extremely serious charge… A plot to physically attack Ellsberg is notable because the former Pentagon official has long alleged that Nixon operatives did more than steal his medical files, the most well-known effort to discredit him.”

GA-06: Nasty Ad Links Ossoff to Congressional Shooting

Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel strongly condemned an attack ad that surfaced Sunday accusing the “unhinged left” of endorsing violence against Republicans days before the nationally-watched race to represent Georgia’s 6th District is decided.

The ad, funded by a little-known group called the Principled PAC, opens with sounds of gunshots and footage of U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise being wheeled away on a stretcher after he and other members of the Republican congressional baseball team were ambushed by a lone gunman while practicing in a Washington suburb.

“The man is fighting for his life,” Ossoff said Sunday after a campaign stop. “I think it’s disgraceful to politicize it, and I think Secretary Handel should call for it to come down.”

A spokeswoman for Handel, a former Georgia secretary of state, called the video “disturbing and disgusting” in a statement that stopped short of asking for the ad to be removed.

“For any group to use the shootings this week for political or personal benefit is shameful,” said Kate Constantini. “This group should be ashamed.”
