Political Wire: If I had to pick a winner, it was Harris.

Only Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg improved their position in the Democratic presidential race tonight. Both were prepared and very clear in explaining why they were running and what they would do as president. But most important for Democrats, both play to win. They would be formidable competitors to Donald Trump.

If I had to pick a winner, it was Harris.

The most experienced candidates on the stage — Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders — significantly underperformed expectations. They weren’t terrible, but they likely lost ground tonight.

The remaining six candidates were incredibly weak. None were close to being presidential. They were a combination of unlikeable (Kirsten Gillibrand, Eric Swalwell), not prepared (John Hickenlooper, Michael Bennet), lacking in stature (Andrew Yang) and just plain weird (Marianne Williamson). That may not be entirely fair, but they did not belong on the stage.

I’m really looking forward to the next debate with a much smaller field.

The DLCC sees a spike in contributions after SCOTUS gerrymandering decision.

From an email:

Just a few hours ago, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh provided the decisive 5th vote to green-light extreme right-wing gerrymandering in all 50 states – no exceptions.

Giddy Republicans instantly started celebrating. The head of the GOP's national gerrymandering operation called it "a great win." But as Kavanaugh himself said at his confirmation hearing, "what goes around comes around" – and Trump and the GOP are already paying dearly for this ruling.

From the moment this ruling was announced, donations started POURING IN to support Democratic state legislators and BLOCK Trump's allies from gerrymandering our district maps. And they're STILL pouring in right now – just look how fast they're coming!

100% of each gift is going back out the door immediately to help take down Trump's closest allies in the states and make sure Republicans PAY at the ballot box for this full-on assault on our democracy.

Even better, a coalition of progressive donors has agreed to match all of these gifts FIVE-to-ONE until midnight Sunday!

Let's Flip Virginia: Three stories from the ground on why the 2019 election matters

oday we’re launching a new digital video series, Let’s Flip Virginia, to emphasize the stakes in this November’s General Assembly elections.

Through their personal stories, three House candidates, Shelly Simonds, Delegate Jennifer Carroll Foy and Phil Hernandez, show not just how close we are to flipping Virginia, but why it matters.

Grab a bowl of popcorn, sit back, and get ready to fall in love with state legislative elections all over again! (To all the haters saying, “These videos are less than three minutes all together. A bowl of popcorn?” we say, “Live your life.”)
