New psychology research indicates that social rigidity is a key predictor of cognitive rigidity

Source: PsyPost

Recent research found a strong connection between social rigidity and cognitive rigidity, suggesting that inflexible thinking in one area tends to be associated with inflexible thinking in another. The study, published in Psychological Research, provides evidence that people who embrace rigid political and social attitudes tend to perform worse on tests of problem-solving abilities.

Previous research has suggested a connection between different forms of social rigidity and a rigid cognitive style of reasoning. However, there were discrepancies in the literature regarding how cognitive style was defined and measured. Many studies relied on self-report questionnaires and qualitative measures rather than objective tests assessing cognitive functions. Therefore, the researchers aimed to use objective cognitive tasks to assess cognitive flexibility and explore its relationship with social rigidity.

Putin says he tried but failed to oust Prigozhin after Wagner mutiny

Source: The Guardian

Vladimir Putin has said that he sought and failed to have Yevgeny Prigozhin replaced as the leader of Wagner’s fighters in Ukraine after the mercenary chief rebuffed his proposal during a meeting at the Kremlin this month.

Putin’s version of events, which appeared in an interview with the Kommersant newspaper, was a surprise admission that the Russian president was still negotiating a takeover of the Wagner mercenary group.

Analysts have suggested that last month’s short-lived Wagner rebellion exposed Putin’s weakness and inability to manage the conflicts among the various power players in his regime.

On Friday, Belarusian state media broadcast footage it said showed that Wagner instructors had begun to arrive in Belarus as part of an exile deal reached with the Kremlin after the aborted mutiny.

Putin told the columnist Andrei Kolesnikov that he met Prigozhin and 35 Wagner commanders at the Kremlin after the mutiny and sought to negotiate terms for the mercenary group’s continued participation in Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Nizar Trabelsi found not guilty of plotting terror with Osama bin Laden

Source: NBC News

In a rare and shocking development, an accused foreign
Islamic terrorist was found not guilty Friday by a jury in federal
court after a trial on charges he conspired with Osama bin Laden to
conduct a suicide bombing on Americans in Europe two decades ago, his
lawyer said.

Nizar Trabelsi, a former Tunisian professional soccer star, was
extradited to the United States in 2013 to face the charges. The
indictment alleged that he personally met in the spring of 2001 with
bin Laden to volunteer for a suicide bomb attack against U.S.
interests.

Preparations unfolded over the next several months, according to the
indictment, with Trabelsi allegedly obtaining chemicals in Europe and
subsequently joining others to scout a potential target: a military
facility that was used by the United States and the United States Air
Force.

According to the indictment, Trabelsi was living in Germany in 2000,
when he met with other conspirators and made preparations to travel to
Afghanistan to train for jihad.

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon isn't a fan of 'Bidenomics'

Source: CNN

Jamie Dimon isn’t sold on “Bidenomics.”

“I’d be careful about that,” said Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, in reference to president Joe Biden’s economic theory that rejects “trickle-down” policies in favor of focusing on the middle class.

The president claims that middle-class focus is the driving force behind the US economy’s success, but Dimon’s not convinced. “It’s a tough question to answer,” said the head of the nation’s largest bank, when asked if Bidenomics is as successful as the president makes it out to be.

In an interview with The Economist released Tuesday, Dimon classified Bidenomics largely as industrial policy – a strategy that specifically encourages or subsidizes particular industries, such as manufacturing. He said he’s in favor of some industrial policy lately, for the first time in his life, but only as it relates to national security and competitiveness.

“There shouldn’t be social policy around that,” he said adding that “it shouldn’t be political it should be purely economic.”

An Oklahoma judge has thrown out a lawsuit seeking reparations for the 1921 Tulsa race massacre, das

Source: The Guardian

Viola Fletcher, 109, known as Mother Fletcher, the oldest survivor of the Tulsa race massacre, poses for a portrait on Juneteenth in Washington, DC, on Monday, June 19, 2023. Fletcher recently co-published her memoir "Don't Let Them Bury My Story" with her grandson, Ike Howard.

The judge, Caroline Wall, on Friday dismissed with prejudice the lawsuit which attempted to force the city and others to make recompense for the destruction of Greenwood, a once-thriving Black district.

The case involved three survivors of the attack, all now over 100 years old and who sued in 2020, in the hope of seeing what their attorney called “justice in their lifetime”.

Spokespeople for the city and a lawyer for the survivors – Lessie Benningfield Randle, Viola Fletcher and Hughes Van Ellis – did not immediately comment.

Canadian Judge Rules Thumbs-Up Emoji Can Represent Contract Agreement

A Canadian judge has ruled that the "Thumbs-up" emoji is just as valid as a signature, arguing that courts need to adapt to the "New reality" of how people communicate as he ordered a farmer to pay C$82,000 for an unfulfilled contract.

The buyer pointed to previous contracts confirmed by text message, suggesting the emoji meant Achter was agreeing to the terms of the contract.

Justice Timothy Keene, who at one point used a dictionary.com definition of the symbol, lamented that the case "Led the parties to a far flung search for the equivalent of the Rosetta Stone in cases from Israel, New York State and some tribunals in Canada, etc. to unearth what a emoji means".

Keene also dismissed defence concerns that allowing the thumbs up emoji to signify acceptance "Would open up the flood gates" to new interpretations of other emojis, including the 'fist bump' and 'hand shake'
