Jilly_in_VA's JournalOlympics: "Who shoots at someone else's target?"
It is bad enough if you have a wardrobe malfunction in an Olympic final - but it is even worse if the distraction causes you to shoot at your rival's target.
Serhiy Kulish was left cursing his luck when exactly this scenario cost the Ukrainian the chance of a medal.
The world number two, who won silver in the 10m air rifle in 2016, was hovering around fourth place when it happened.
"Who shoots into someone else's target? Only people like me," he fumed.

Former University of Tennessee professor falsely accused of espionage faces second trial
The Justice Department is taking another shot at prosecuting a former University of Tennessee professor whose career and reputation were ruined by a false spy claim leveled by the previous administration.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Casey Arrowood has filed a one-page notice in U.S. District Court in Knoxville that the Justice Department intends to try for the second time Dr. Anming Hu on fraud charges the agency brought under the Trump administration after falsely accusing the nanotechnology expert of being a spy for the Chinese military.
A jury earlier this year deadlocked on the issue of Hus guilt, delivering the first public blow to the Trump administrations highly-touted China Initiative a campaign to expose Chinese spies operating in America that instead targeted Chinese academics working in American universities.
Since then, the Biden administrations Justice Department has dropped five other cases against Chinese academics that were the result of the flawed initiative. Arrowood gave no explanation in his notice why the Justice Department is declining to dismiss the case against Hu.

This is so bullshit. The guy is no more a spy than my 3 year old granddaughter. What I'm wondering is if this Arrowod dude is a leftover from the previous criminal gang. They're still around everywhere.
Iceland Is the Tip of a Vast Lost Continent Beneath the Ocean's Surface, Scientists Propose
A vast sunken continent called Icelandia may exist under the North Atlantic Ocean, a finding that, if proven, could upend long-standing assumptions about the regions geological history and inform the search for other submerged continents around the globe.
The proposed continent is estimated to extend for at least 230,000 square miles, reaching Greenland to the north and potentially Europe to the east. Iceland is the uppermost tip of this hidden continental mass, according to researchers led by Gillian Foulger, emeritus professor of geophysics at Durham University, who proposed the idea in the forthcoming book In the Footsteps of Warren B. Hamilton: New Ideas in Earth Science.
As exciting as it is to imagine this immense sunken landmass, Foulger and her colleagues emphasized that Icelandia remains a hypothesis that will need to be confirmed through a range of empirical methods such as deep drilling, geophysical surveys, and analysis of minerals such as zircon.
The existence of Icelandia needs to be tested, Foulger and her colleagues said in the chapter, adding that Icelandia is a convenient example to pioneer new methods and hypotheses that could be applied to other candidate sunken continents that are common in the oceans.

Fascinating to me because my dad was a physical geographer. I can imagine him being all over this stuff.
Bad genes, not rock'n'roll excess, killed Elvis Presley, claims biographer
Elvis Presley, who died 44 years ago this month, was not a drug abuser in the typical rocknroll lifestyle sense, a new book claims, but he was medicating to address a series of congenital illnesses.
According to Elvis: Destined to Die Young, the singers downward spiral, punctuated by health problems routinely written off as the consequences of addiction, could have been caused by Presleys maternal grandparents, who were first cousins. His mothers family including three uncles were cursed by early death, the author Sally Hoedel says.
Hoedel, an historian, claims it was not a coincidence, that Presleys mother, Gladys, died at 46 and Presley at 42. They had a similar four-year period of degenerative health, and thats interesting because she did not take the same medication as he took.

Florida/Highest one-day total of Covid cases since start of pandemic
Floridas ban on mask mandates came under increasing scrutiny from public health officials on Sunday as the surging Delta variant pushed new daily cases of Covid-19 in the state to a record high.
The 21,683 new cases reported on Saturday was Floridas highest one-day total since the start of the pandemic. It came a day after Ron DeSantis signed an executive order prohibiting school districts from requiring staff and students to wear masks.
On Sunday, the state broke its previous record for hospitalisations, also set more than a year ago.
Dr Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), told CNNs State of the Union he was baffled by the prohibition on requiring masks in schools, the latest in a series of autocratic moves by DeSantis including outlawing vaccine passports and stripping local authorities of the power to issue restrictions or mandates.

NOT A spoiler--Out-And-Proud Raven 'Hulk' Saunders Takes Silver In Women's Shot Put
(Not a spoiler because this happened last night EDT!)
When U.S. shot putter Raven Saunders is competing, she calls herself the "Hulk." It's the alter ego that bursts onto the field to fight for championships.
Saunders with the help of her "Hulk" persona took silver in the women's shot put final at the Tokyo Summer Olympics. She hurled the heavy ball 19.79 meters, or nearly 65 feet. It's the third medal ever for the U.S. in the women's event and it's Saunders' first.
"I remember my first Olympics, being able to watch Michelle Carter come out here and, you know, get it done," she said, referring to the U.S. female gold medalist in shot put at the 2016 Games. "I made sure that when I came out from 2016, constantly fighting and constantly pushing through everything, I made sure I walked away with a medal."
China's Gong Lijiao took gold and Valerie Adams, of New Zealand, won bronze.

I love Raven! She is a terrific person as well as a fun persona. Also I have a granddaughter who is a thrower. She is Black/Puerto Rican and wears her hair natural; she fluffs it way out to look "scary" when she throws.
