Tanzania's president says 'vaccines don't work,' earning a rebuff from the W.H.O.

Tanzania’s president cast doubt on coronavirus vaccines and other measures to curb the spread of the pandemic, doubling down on his line of reasoning that only God could protect the East African nation. His comments came a day before the World Health Organization urged the nation to take measures to protect its population.

President John Magufuli of Tanzania, speaking to a large, unmasked crowd in the country’s northwest on Wednesday, questioned the efficacy of vaccines and discouraged the Ministry of Health from pursuing doses, saying the shots were not “beneficial” to the East African nation.

“Vaccines don’t work,” Mr. Magufuli, 61, said in his speech. “If the white man was able to come up with vaccinations, then vaccines for AIDS would have been brought. Vaccines for tuberculosis would have made it a thing of the past. Vaccines for malaria would have been found. Vaccines for cancer would have been found.”

On Thursday, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, the regional director for the W.H.O. in Africa, urged the Tanzanian government to share data, establish measures to protect its citizens from the virus and prepare for the vaccine. “Science shows that #VaccinesWork,” Dr. Moeti tweeted.

Infamous Rudy witness Mellissa Carone Says she's Running For Michigan House

Mellissa Carone, who rose to memedom last month during a Michigan legislative hearing on election fraud, hopes to parlay her infamy into a state House seat.

The former contractor for Dominion Voting Systems confirmed Friday that she's running for Michigan's 46th house district in Oakland County on a platform of election integrity after claiming, without evidence, that she witnessed rampant fraud at TCF Center in Detroit in November.

"My ultimate goal is to get our ballots hand-counted and clean out Lansing just like draining the swamp in D.C. because that’s what we need," she said.

Carone became the subject of a flurry of negative media attention and a "Saturday Night Live" sketch after filing an affadavit in an election-fraud suit and appearing Dec. 2 as a witness for Rudy Giuliani during a House Oversight Committee hearing in Lansing.

Photos put Tuberville in Trump's hotel on Jan. 5 despite denying meeting

labama Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville through a spokeswoman Tuesday denied meeting with the then-director of the Republican Attorneys General Association and others inside Trump’s private residence at the Trump International Hotel on Jan. 5 — on the eve of the deadly U.S. Capitol attack.

But a photo posted to social media appears to show Tuberville in the hotel’s lobby that day, and a company CEO in a separate post describes meeting with Tuberville and others at the hotel that day and discussing “illegal votes.”

Charles W. Herbster, who was then the national chairman of the Agriculture and Rural Advisory Committee in Trump’s administration, in a Facebook post at 8:33 p.m. on Jan. 5 said that he was standing “in the private residence of the President at Trump International with the following patriots who are joining me in a battle for justice and truth.”

Among the attendees, according to Herbster’s post, were Tuberville, former RAGA director Adam Piper, Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, Trump’s former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, adviser Peter Navarro, Trump’s 2016 campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and 2016 deputy campaign manager David Bossie.

Man accused of beheading U.S. journalist Daniel Pearl ordered released by Pakistani court

Source: Washington Post

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Pakistan's Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the release of a man convicted of beheading U.S. journalist Daniel Pearl.

The decision left the Pearl family “in complete shock,” according to a statement from Faisal Siddiqi, a lawyer for the Pearl family. He called the decision “a complete travesty of justice.”

Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh was the main suspect in the 2002 kidnapping and murder of Pearl, a Wall Street Journal reporter covering militants in Pakistan in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Saeed, a British-born Pakistani who was implicated in other kidnappings, had been sentenced to death for Pearl’s murder and kidnapping.

The Supreme Court decision Thursday follows a move by a provincial court last year to overturn Saeed’s sentence. That was quickly appealed by the Pearl family, but ultimately dismissed Thursday by the Supreme Court ruling.

Florida legislative panel backs protest bill after fierce debate

“I was recently asked, how can we make this bill better? You can shred it,” one Democrat said.

An effort to enhance penalties associated with violent protests, create new crimes when mobs attack property or police and make it difficult for cities to trim law-enforcement spending had a rocky legislative debut Wednesday, drawing heated criticism from opponents.

The measure is backed by the state’s three most-powerful Republican leaders but was decried as unnecessary and divisive by Democrats and other critics — many of them young or Black — who unsuccessfully urged the House Criminal Justice & Public Safety Subcommittee to reject the proposal.

“I was recently asked, how can we make this bill better? You can shred it,” state Rep. Mike Grieco, a Miami Beach Democrat who is a former prosecutor, said before the Republican-controlled panel voted along party lines in favor of the measure.

But House Speaker Chris Sprowls, R-Palm Harbor, issued a statement after the vote pointing to the “passionate, vocal speech and debate” about the bill (HB 1).

Biden COVID team releases 'previously hidden' Florida report

The new White House COVID-19 team released its first “previously hidden” state profiles Wednesday, showing Florida’s coronavirus infection rate fell 19% last week but deaths continued to climb.

The state profiles were previously shared by the Trump administration’s coronavirus task force only with state officials, and most states, including Florida, never released them to the public. The Orlando Sentinel had to file a lawsuit against Gov. Ron DeSantis in December to force the disclosure of the information.

“We are now sharing previously hidden weekly COVID-19 state profile reports with the public,” Dr. Cyrus Shahpar, the new White House COVID-19 data director said in a tweet Wednesday afternoon, which linked to the reports.

The move, the reports’ authors said, is part of an effort to “develop a shared understanding of the current status of the pandemic” across national, state and local levels.

New College Foundation launches $15 million campaign to refurbish halls designed by I.M. Pei

The New College Foundation has launched a $15 million fundraising campaign to refurbish the Sarasota college’s residence halls designed by the renowned architect I.M. Pei. The campaign is spearheaded by Monica Van Buskirk, a foundation board member.

“After 55 years, Pei’s iconic structures are showing their age,” Van Buskirk said in a statement. “We are inviting New College alumni, our community and beyond to participate in preserving this extraordinary architectural legacy. I.M. Pei built for the future. The humanist legacy of his work is timeless. It’s now up to us to pass it on.”

Van Buskirk noted that campaign funds will be used to replace roofs, seal buildings against water intrusion, install new cooling and heating systems, renew the courtyards, and renovate and upgrade the dormitory rooms.

“These efforts will ensure the value of Pei’s buildings well into the future,” Van Buskirk said. “They will also keep this unique chapter of Sarasota’s architectural history alive.”

Publix-only vaccine plan 'unconscionable,' Glades mayors say

After spending weeks working to convince skeptical seniors to get the coronavirus vaccine, Belle Glade Mayor Steve Wilson now has to explain to his constituents that none is available.

When Gov. Ron DeSantis decided to send the lion’s share of Palm Beach County's allotment of vaccines to Publix, he all but assured residents of the poverty-wracked farming community won’t get them, Wilson said.

“There’s no way in humanity my seniors can make such a long drive, and I wouldn’t want them to,” he said, pointing out that the nearest Publix store is in Loxahatchee Groves. “How can you even think about laying out a plan where you don’t have a Publix within 30 miles? It’s ridiculous.”

In a letter to DeSantis on Wednesday, Wilson and the mayors of South Bay and Pahokee explained that many people in the predominantly Black communities don’t own cars.
