California Police Union Loses Fight Against Deadly Force Reforms

Law enforcement unions historically have exerted deft legislative lobbying influences regardless of whether Republicans or Democrats controlled the state government.

But a California Court of Appeal this week rejected police attempts to thwart a public oversight body from banning cops’ use of carotid restraints against citizens as well as shooting at moving vehicles.

The San Francisco Police Officers’ Association asserted that the city’s police commission didn’t have the authority to make the reforms without its permission.

After trying nine times to win consensus, the San Francisco Police Commission unanimously voted to impose the reforms on Dec. 23, 2016.

Judge annuls Kavanaugh marriage over calendar disparity

WASHINGTON – A federal judge yesterday annulled the wedding of Brett and Ashley Kavanaugh when the former Mrs. Kavanaugh produced a calendar from 2004 that did not show a wedding on the date that Mr. Kavanaugh claims they were married. The court ruled that, in a he-said, she-said situation such as this, even with plenty of witnessess and photographs, there can be no conclusive evidence that the wedding actually took place, and the union was annulled immediately.

“You can see right here, your honor,” she said, pulling out her phone to open the calendar app. “I’m scrolling back to 2004 and there’s no wedding of any kind listed. Honestly, Brett may have married someone that day, but it sure wasn’t me. Maybe he is mis-remembering?”

“You didn’t even have that calendar then!” Kavanaugh protested angrily while cradling a six-pack of Bud Light. “This is just nuts!”

The judge quickly agreed that Ms. Estes, formerly Kavanaugh, would clearly never have married such a creature as was present in the courtroom that day, and declared the marriage null and void until such a time as further evidence could be brought forward proving conclusively that there had been a wedding at all.

Now You See It, Now You Don't: Hate Group Nod Gone from Diane Harkey's Website

An endorsement from San Diegans for Secure Borders was pulled from 49th congressional district Republican candidate Diane Harkey’s campaign website shortly after it was disclosed the group promotes white nationalist propaganda and attacks Latino and Muslim immigrants as foreign invaders.

Media Matters for America, a Washington, D.C.-based progressive nonprofit with a mission of “comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media,” first pointed out Wednesday that Harkey had touted the San Diegans for Secure Borders endorsement of her.

That disclosure brought out the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee guns, in the form of spokesman Drew Godinich, who said, “Diane Harkey touting a known hate group’s endorsement on her website is beyond disturbing–and for the NRCC [National Republican Congressional Committee] to support a second Orange County congressional candidate who proudly displays their ties to the worst elements of our society is just as disturbing. Harkey and the NRCC should immediately disavow this group.”

The “second Orange County congressional candidate who proudly displays their ties to the worst elements of our society” is a reference to Surf City-based Representative Dana Rohrabacher (R-Putin’s White House), who has endorsed a local school board candidate aligned with the alt right and aligned himself with an alt-right blogger, both of whom have minimized the Holocaust.

Pay equity analyses of Oregon government employees uncover disparities, cause frustration

Pay equity analyses in all three branches of state government have exposed instances of unequal pay for similar work and created growing confusion among legislative staff and members.

Intermittently during the past few days of legislative hearings, lawmakers and staff have emailed and met to discuss the implementation of pay equity and the corresponding analysis as required by a law passed in 2017.

There is some concern the analysis has lacked adequate communication or is moving too fast with what will directly impact state workers' pay.

Any changes to meet pay equity standards can only come from an increase in salary. The law states that a person's salary cannot be reduced to meet pay equity.

FBI agent shot by booby-trapped wheelchair in Oregon home

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A former southern Oregon property owner has been charged with assault on a federal officer after authorities say an FBI agent sent to the property was shot from a booby-trapped wheelchair.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports that authorities responded to the home in Williams on Sept. 7 at the request of a lawyer tasked with selling the property.

A criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Medford says officers found multiple traps and that the agent was wounded in the leg when he entered the home.

Authorities say the makeshift weapons were created by Gregory Rodvelt, who was forced to forfeit his property as part of an elder abuse case.

DeWine, Cordray spar, but align against right-to-work

MARIETTA, Ohio (AP) — Ohio's major party governor candidates both said Monday that they'd veto right-to-work legislation and foster a civil, bipartisan spirit in Ohio government.

And that's about where the agreements ended between Republican Attorney General Mike DeWine and Democrat Richard Cordray, the former federal consumer watchdog, during their second televised debate.

The two are locked in a tight, expensive race this fall to succeed Republican Gov. John Kasich, who's term-limited.

DeWine said he would veto right-to-work legislation requiring public employee unions to get annual permission from workers to withhold dues from paychecks.

Meet Mr. 'Anger Burger'

A Medford City Council candidate with a long history of profane and demeaning online posts has ramped up those attacks against other community members, referring to one Senate candidate as a “whore” and the leader of a children’s nonprofit group as a “dumbass slovenly pig.”

Curt Ankerberg, who is running in Ward 1 in northeastern Medford, finished second in the Senate District 3 Republican primary in May to Jessica Gomez.

Political observers say they fear he could win this council race as he has name familiarity from 10 unsuccessful runs and the vote will be split among four candidates. Two candidates have Medford political experience: business owner Alex Poythress is on the city Planning Commission, and Steve Dickson, an employee with the Veterans Administration, is on the Budget Committee. The fourth candidate is David Dobrin, formerly with sales at Lithia Dodge.

Ankerberg, a certified public accountant, also has drawn scrutiny for issues related to his work. In January, U.S. Tax Court Senior Judge Mary Ann Cohen found Ankerberg had committed tax fraud in 2012-2014, failing to report $111,366 in income and improperly claiming $67,000 in deductions.

State Approves Request To Fill Aging Hanford Tunnel

RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) — The Department of Energy has been cleared to immediately begin stabilizing a tunnel containing highly radioactive waste that is at risk of collapse.

The Tri-City Herald reports filling the tunnel with a concrete-like grout intended to strengthen the structure located on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation could start in the next week.

Hanford for decades made plutonium for nuclear weapons, and some of the waste is stored in tunnels on the huge site.

One tunnel partially collapsed in 2017. A study revealed a second and much larger tunnel, built in 1964, was at serious risk of collapse.

Baby died at illegal day care tolerated by state; workers criminally charged

An infant boy remembered for his bright blue eyes died at a Hood River day care that state regulators allowed to operate illegally for months.

A child care regulator, a day care operator with whom she was friends and two other women were quietly indicted last month on criminal charges arising from the May 15 death of Cyrus Macioroski.

Exactly how the baby died has not been made public, but the indictments say day care operator Rochelle R. Jones and the other two women left Cyrus, then 4 months old, unattended for "a period of time that was likely to endanger (his) health and welfare."

The Oregon Office of Child Care had revoked the license of Mama Shell's Day Care in April 2017. A criminal indictment alleges that child care licensing compliance specialist Julie A. Smith helped Jones, whom it calls her friend, maintain the business after it was shut down.

Oregon widow sues dead husband's alleged lover for $1 million

An Oregon widow has filed a $1 million lawsuit against the woman she believes was having an extramarital affair with her husband.

Lana Dong claims that the circumstances of the affair led to her husband's death.

Dong alleges that the other woman, Anh Tram Gia Phan, was negligent for not doing a better job of hiding the affair, according to the lawsuit filed Friday.

On Dec. 5, 2017, Phan’s jealous ex-husband caught the philandering pair in the act at Phan’s Corvallis nail salon, according to the lawsuit. The ex-husband then beat Mitch Xuan Dong with a baseball bat and stabbed him, the suit alleges.
