UT kicks off $6B fundraising campaign to become 'world's most impactful public research university'

The University of Texas is launching one of the most ambitious fundraising goals of any public university in the country to amp up the school’s reach.

The “What Starts Here” campaign aims to raise $6 billion for the Austin campus by the end of 2025 — also the largest goal of its kind for any higher education institution in Texas, officials said.

This is one step of many as the school works to reach its goal of “becoming the world’s most impactful public research university,” UT President Jay Hartzell said.

The initiative aims to raise $1 billion for scholarships and programs that help students succeed at the university. Money will also go toward strengthening faculty recruitment and retention by establishing endowed faculty chairs, professorships and fellowships; transforming healthcare in Texas by expanding research and innovation in how care is delivered; and investing in UT strengths, such as computational intelligence, communications and law.

The Lewisville Fighting Farmers water tower was erected in 1959, when the town had about 5,000 resid

The Lewisville Fighting Farmers water tower, an iconic fixture for the city’s residents and a familiar sight to countless motorists who travel the stretch of Interstate 35E over which the structure looms, will be torn down next week, a city official said.

When the tower was built in 1959, Lewisville’s population was 5,000 and the structure was able to deliver water to residents with ease, said James Kunke, the city’s community relations and tourism director.

Today, U.S. census estimates put Lewisville’s population at over 110,000, and the the tower is no longer up to the task, Kunke said.

“The tower is not tall enough or big enough to continue doing the job,” he said.

The tower, which is at I-35E and Main Street, wasn’t the city’s first elevated water tower, Kunke said. That honor belongs to a tower on Church Street downtown.

UNT-Dallas law school gets full approval from bar association

After more than seven years since it opened, the University of North Texas at Dallas College of Law has been fully approved by the American Bar Association — a milestone longtime in the making.

A council of the bar association gave the school full approval about two weeks ago after a final presentation by school officials in San Diego the same day. The association notified college officials of the recognition last week.

“It’s a major day for UNT-Dallas because this law school has been in the works for many years,” said Felecia Epps, the law school’s dean. “It is a major issue of major accomplishment for the entire university.”

Andrew Ratley, 43, enrolled at the UNT-Dallas law school in the fall of 2019. He said the bar association’s full approval is an affirmation of everything he invested in when he took a chance on the new school.
