Idaho Legislature wraps up business, after a tussle over $100, but does not adjourn

After a marathon day at the Idaho State Capitol in Boise, it appears that $100 and the threat of having to spend any more time with each other broke a legislative impasse over a library budget late Friday night.

But instead of adjourning for the year, legislators voted to take a recess until Thursday.

Shortly before 10:30 p.m. Friday, the Idaho House of Representatives voted 41-21 to pass the 2023 budget for the Idaho Commission for Libraries. The House had killed two previous versions of the budget in the past two days.

The only change between the library commission budget the House killed at about 6:30 p.m. and the budget it passed four hours later was a $100 reduction in federal funding.

Ammon Bundy pays himself thousands in campaign cash

Ammon Bundy, the anti-government activist running as an independent candidate to be Idaho’s next governor, has paid thousands of dollars in campaign donations to a company he owns.

According to campaign finance records, Bundy’s campaign has paid $13,500 in $1,500 monthly installments since June 1, 2021 to Abish-Husbondi Inc, a company incorporated in Wyoming.

The address listed on his campaign finance report traces back to a warehouse in Emmett where he’s held protests against, and in defiance of, Gov. Brad Little’s stay-at-home order in early 2020. Gem County property records list Abish-Husbondi Inc as the owner of the three-acre property.

The company’s name appears to be a nod to Abish, a figure in the Book of Mormon who encounters the missionary Ammon. Husbondi is an Old Norse word said to mean “master of the house.”

Bundy is listed as the company’s president and sole officer in an annual report filed June 7, 2021.

U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela's resignation announcement sparks a sudden special-election scramble in hotly

U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela’s resignation announcement sparks a sudden special-election scramble in hotly contested South Texas

by Patrick Svitek, Texas Tribune

Democrats are suddenly staring down a special election in South Texas, an increasingly competitive region, after U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela, D-Brownsville, revealed Thursday he plans to leave Congress early.

The winner of the special election will get to serve for only a short period, but Republicans are already eyeing the election as an opportunity to show their growing strength in the region.

The National Republican Congressional Committee called Vela’s early exit the latest sign that the national environment is unfavorable for Democrats — and that “South Texas is a top battleground for Republicans.” Democrats scoffed.

“Republicans talk a big game about flipping seats in South Texas, but this is the party that voted against historic infrastructure investments and creating good-paying jobs in the Valley,” Monica Robinson, a spokesperson for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said in a statement.

In Texas, calls to boost U.S. oil production after Russian invasion run into hard realities

By Mitchell Ferman, Texas Tribune

MIDLAND — After Russia invaded Ukraine last month and the U.S. and major energy companies boycotted Russian oil and gas, some politicians quickly called for cranking up American energy production to fill the void.

A Republican member of Congress attended President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address earlier this month wearing a shirt emblazoned with “Drill baby drill.” U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela, a Democrat from Brownsville, tweeted, “Save Ukraine! Unleash American Oil and Gas!”

And U.S. Rep. August Pfluger, R-San Angelo, who represents the heart of Texas’ oil patch, has printed red, white and blue baseball caps with an oil pump jack next to the words “Midland over Moscow.”

“The energy producers of [West Texas] and America are READY to produce the energy our nation and allies need!” Pfluger wrote on Twitter.
