Democrats unleash 10,000 robocalls blasting Pete Sessions on Internet privacy vote

Democrats are after Rep. Pete Sessions — again.

This week the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee took aim at the powerful chairman of the House Rules Committee with a barrage of automated telephones calls to his district.

The 10,000 robocalls started Wednesday, a day after Sessions, R-Dallas, voted in favor of revoking the FCC's broadband privacy rule.

"Rep. Sessions just voted to allow internet providers, like Comcast and Verizon, to sell your sensitive personal information to other companies — all without your consent," a voice on the call says. "Thanks to House Republicans, your internet browsing history, personal health and financial information and even location, can be sold to the highest bidder."

Republican candidate for Philly DA sees opening after Democrat incumbent's indictment

Philadelphia has long been a Democratic stronghold, but Republican candidate for district attorney Beth Grossman says that could change following the recent indictment of the city's top prosecutor on corruption charges.

Grossman announced her campaign a year ago, long before Democrat Seth Williams, the current Philadelphia district attorney, was charged with multiple counts of bribery and extortion on March 21.

Grossman, 49, is a former assistant prosecutor in Williams' office, where she worked from 1993 until 2015. She left, Grossman said, because of concerns over corruption.

“I didn’t like what I saw going on,” she said in an interview on Thursday.

Massachusetts man sues Dunkin' Donuts after his buttered bagel didn't have butter

When a Massachusetts man ordered a buttered bagel from Dunkin Donuts, he was given a butter substitute instead — so he sued and won a settlement.

Jan Polanik, a man from the Worcester area, filed a pair of lawsuits in Suffolk Superior Court this month accusing more than 20 Dunkin' Donuts locations of deception, the Boston Globe reported.

Polanik's attorney, Thomas Shapiro, said they debated whether or not to bring the lawsuits, which are seeking class-action status. But they didn't do it just to benefit Polanik. The suits claim to represent any customer who ordered butter but received a substitute spread instead between June 24, 2012, and June 24, 2016.

“The main point of the lawsuit is to stop the practice of representing one thing and selling a different thing," Shapiro told the Globe. "It’s a minor thing, but at the same time, if somebody goes in and makes a point to order butter for the bagel ... they don’t want margarine or some other kind of chemical substitute.”

Sisters detained at Logan for 36 hours sent back to Colombia: Lawyer

The latest victims of President Trump’s aggressive immigration crackdown are two sisters who were sent back to Colombia after being detained at Boston’s Logan International Airport for 36 hours.

The sisters, 20-year-old Dayana Gomez and Laura Gomez, 11, were immediately detained for questioning by U.S. Customs and Border agents when they arrived in Boston Wednesday to visit their mother and stepfather, Cambridge lawyer Heather Yountz told The Boston Globe.

Only when Laura was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital the following day after she had been suffering severe stomach pain were her mother and stepfather allowed to see them. However, a border agent was posted outside the hospital room and the family was not allowed to use cellphones.

“This is not like anything that I’ve ever seen,” said Yountz, who offered legal assistance to the sisters.

Big Gay Ice Cream comes in pints now

People of New York and Philadelphia, get your spoons ready. Big Gay Ice Cream now comes in pints that you can buy in-store and eat in the comfort of your own home.

If you’ve been living under a rock and have never heard of Big Gay Ice Cream before, here's the deal. Founders Douglas Quint and Bryan Petroff started selling their soft serve ice creams out of a truck in NYC in 2009, but within two years, their popularity grew enough that in 2011 they opened their first store in the East Village. (No matter what time of day, there was always a giant line when I lived there.) This was followed by two more shops in NYC and then in 2015, they debuted their first store outside of the Big Apple in Philadelphia.

Best known for fun treats like the ultra decadent Salty Pimp Cone (vanilla soft serve lathered in dulce de leche covered with a salty dark chocolate shell) and American Globs (vanilla soft serve with dark chocolate pretzel pieces affectionately named after Neil Gaiman’s book, “American Gods&quot , their ice cream tantalizes your tastebuds and their quirky names like Salty Pimp and Rocky Roadhouse are certainly a conversation starter.

The brand recently launched a collection of pints available in all Big Gay Ice Cream locations as well as select supermarket shelves. Here are the flavors you can find during your late night run to Fairway. You can also buy online through Amazon Fresh, Fresh Direct and Jet.

Rikers Island will close: de Blasio

The Rikers Island jail complex will be closed, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Friday afternoon.

“New York City has always been better than Rikers Island. I am proud to chart a course for our city that lives up to this reality,” de Blasio said.

“Our success in reducing crime and reforming our criminal justice system has paved a path off Rikers Island and toward community-based facilities capable of meeting our criminal justice goals.”

The process will be “long and arduous,” the mayor cautioned.

Central NY students upset after being asked to defend Nazis, Holocaust for homework

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Archer Shurtliff and Jordan April, both 17, felt "weird" when in February they received an assignment asking students to argue for the extermination of Jewish people.

The words "TOP SECRET" were stamped across the top in red. The "memorandum," first posted online and addressed to senior Nazi party members, asked students to put themselves in the shoes of Adolf Hitler's top aides.

Archer and Jordan, who are not Jewish, wondered if they understood the assignment correctly. Did their teacher, Michael DeNobile, really mean for his students to argue in favor of the "Final Solution," the Nazis' justification for genocide?

During class the next day, DeNobile randomly assigned half the students to argue for, and half to argue against the extermination of Jews. Archer was assigned to be in favor of the Final Solution, and Jordan was picked to be against.

Hempstead Town Councilman Ed Ambrosino arrested for wire fraud and tax evasion

Hempstead Town board member Edward Ambrosino was arrested today on eight counts of wire fraud, tax evasion, making and subscribing to false corporate tax returns, and failing to file a return or pay tax, according to an indictment released this morning by the United States Department of Justice.

Ambrosino, 52, a resident of North Valley Stream, diverted over $800,000 in revenue from his former employer, and failed to pay over $250,000 in federal tax, the indictment said.

A member of the Hempstead Town board since 2003, Ambrosino has been of “special counsel” to Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano since 2010, and “of counsel” to the law firm Ruskin Moscou Faltischek, based in Uniondale, an unidentified source said. Additionally, he incorporated a company, the Vanderbilt Consulting Group, Inc., and was its sole shareholder.

From 2013 through 2015, officials allege that Ambrosino diverted $800,000 of $1.3 million received in legal fees that he was required to provide to Ruskin Moscou Faltischek, and deposited them into the Vanderbilt bank account. The legal fees were paid by the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency and the Nassau County Local Economic Assistance Corporation, among other clients.

At long last, ribbon is cut on new Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum

Outside, it might have been drizzly and cold, but inside spirits were running high among officials on Friday as they cut the ribbon on the new NYCB Live Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, revamped at a cost of $165 million in private funding by Forest City Ratner Companies. Billy Joel will open the remodeled Coliseum on April 5.

Media thronged the Coliseum and its environs for a morning and afternoon of news conferences and tours of the 416,000-square-foot structure, which now glimmers in the middle of Nassau’s Hub, the academic and shopping district at the heart of the county.

“Our goal was to create a space that reflected the tremendous sense of place that permeates Long Island, from the look of the building to the taste of the food,” said Bruce Ratner, executive chairman of Forest City Ratner. “Our talented architectural and development teams have succeeded beyond our dreams, creating a venue that is visually striking and wonderfully comfortable.”

Some 4,700 brushed aluminum fins enclose the rotunda, creating the sense of waves rolling onto a beach, or as officials said, “a subtle flow that reflects the big skies of the flat Long Island landscape.” The fins can be lighted up in multiple colors at night. The architecture firm SHoP Architects designed the exterior, and Gensler, the interior.
