The American landscape is steeped in rich and sometimes painful history, but many of the sites where we go to learn about our past are now at risk as our planet warms. Many U.S. monuments are facing risks from sea level rise, coastal erosion, wildfires and more. As summer unofficially kicks off, the PBS NewsHour talks to Katherine Malone-France, chief preservation officer for the National Trust for Historic Preservation, about four unique monuments facing climate-related risks.

European leaders are meeting in Brussels today to discuss more sanctions against Russia, including a plan to phase out Russian oil imports. But a full ban is looking unlikely, after opposition from Hungary which depends on oil delivered by a Russian pipeline. The two-day European Council meeting is attempting to avoid a display of disunity over the bloc's response to the war in Ukraine.
The outcome of this EU leaders' meeting is being closely observed in Ukraine.

European leaders are meeting today in Brussels to try to agree on Russian oil sanctions following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. It's proven elusive so far, but EU representatives are attempting to hammer out an agreement on an embargo on Russian oil imports. Leaders are hoping to reach a deal on a sixth round of sanctions against Moscow.
But the two-day European Council meeting is being complicated by opposition, mainly from Hungary, which is heavily dependent on Russian oil and objects to a full ban. It says any ban on imports of Russian oil would cross a red line.
EU leaders are expected to consider a compromise which would allow Hungary to continue receiving oil via a pipeline, with sanctions only stopping shipments via sea.
The meeting will also discuss more funds to help Ukraine rebuild by confiscating Russian assets.
Meanwhile oil traders are waiting to see if a deal materializes. Crude prices have hit their highest point in more than two months.

A leftist former rebel fighter has come out on top in the first round of Colombias presidential election and is set to face a populist businessman in a second round showdown on June 19.
Gustavo Petro, a 62-year-old former member of the M-19 guerrilla movement, had 40.3 percent of votes, office tallies showed, with 99.9 percent of ballot boxes counted on Sunday.
Rodolfo Hernandez, a septuagenarian real estate tycoon whose spot in the runoff contest came as a surprise, won 28.1 percent.
Surveys ahead of the first round showed Hernandez who now has the support of third place candidate Federico Gutierrez and likely many of his supporters would lag just a few points behind Petro in a runoff vote.

The largest dam removal operation in US history is due to begin in California.
It is part of a wider trend with almost 60 dams torn down in the past two decades.
Now, after decades of negotiation and bureaucratic delay, the Iron Gate Dam is going to be torn down. The process will take several years and will be the largest dam removal in US history. This latest operation is not just about the environment.
