Young Maine teen may be youngest Democratic delegate in US

AUGUSTA, MAINE >> Trevor Doiron isn't old enough to vote until late July. But when he does, he'll be voting for Hillary Clinton as one of the youngest national Democratic delegates this year.

Though his choice surprised many of his friends who are die-hard supporters of Bernie Sanders, Doiron, 17, says he wants to get them on board to defeat presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Doiron, from Jay, Maine, a population of fewer than 5,000 about 30 miles northwest of Augusta, says he's not from a rich family — he's just a small town kid from a rural area.

"I want to show someone like that has the potential to do great things on the national stage," he says.

Gov. Pat McCrory says he’s still pushing for changes in HB2

Gov. Pat McCrory said Friday he’s still pushing lawmakers to make changes in House Bill 2 before they adjourn.

“That’s my goal,” McCrory told reporters after Friday’s debate against Democratic rival Roy Cooper. “My goal is to reverse the one part I think was wrong, that is, allowing people to sue for discrimination in state courts.”

The governor has asked lawmakers to amend the law, which sparked nationwide criticism by requiring transgender people to use the bathroom or locker room of the gender on their birth certificate in public facilities. One part of the law prohibits people from taking their anti-discrimination claims to state court.

The facts about what Roy Cooper, Pat McCrory said about education in debate

In their first debate, North Carolina’s candidates for governor criticized each other over House Bill 2, taxes, a toll road project near Charlotte and more.

Education, though, was the part of the relatively short debate that saw some of strongest attacks and boldest claims by Roy Cooper and Pat McCrory, as well as some of the biggest audience applause.

Pat McCrory and teacher pay

Republican Gov. McCrory said that North Carolina teachers have done well under GOP leadership, especially lately.

“We’ve given the largest teacher pay raise in the United States of America,” he said.
