TexasTowelie's JournalKaty ISD may call bond election tonight for new stadium
At a meeting tonight, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees may get one step closer to building a second football stadium. The board could call for a November bond election to fund a $68 million, 14,000-seat stadium to sit next to the existing facility.
A bond committee has recommended a three-part bond package for the board to approve, which also includes a new agriculture complex and science center. Officials and KISD staff members say a new stadium is needed to meet scheduling conficts during football season, especially with the opening of high school No. 7.
Katy ISD is the only district in Texas with seven high schools and one stadium for games and activites.

Although the stadium would outsize the current Rhodes Stadium, which seats nearly 10,000, it does not come close to the largest high-school football stadium in the state.

Convicted billionaire who adopted girlfriend allowed private jet to Houston
As he awaits the retrial of his drunken driving manslaughter conviction, billionaire Houston native John Goodman will get to leave his Palm Beach mansion to visit his ailing mother in Houston, a Florida judge decided.
At an emergency hearing last week, Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Jeffrey Colbath agreed to allow Goodman to travel to Houston to visit his mother, 85-year-old Harriet Goodman, the Palm Beach Post reported.
-snip-
The industrialist initially was only approved to take a commercial flight accompanied by four deputies, but Palm Beach sheriff's officials have allowed him to be escorted aboard a chartered jet. He will be responsible for all travel costs, along with lodging and meal expenses, CultureMap reported.
The 49-year-old polo mogul was convicted in March 2012 of DUI-manslaughter and vehicular homicide, stemming from a hit-and-run automobile collision in 2010. He was driving a Bentley in Wellington, Fla., when he ran a stop sign and struck a car driving by Scott Patrick Wilson, 23.

$1 billion DFW Connector project in Grapevine almost finished
GRAPEVINE For nearly four years, Grapevine resident Angela Gair has felt like a prisoner in her own neighborhood.
Since late 2009 and early 2010, residents such as Gair have been boxed in by the DFW Connector, a $1 billion makeover of the 8-mile stretch of Texas 114/121 that forms the main path into and out of the city. Because of the work, motorists encountered confusing detours, and traffic often stacked up for miles.
We chose to stay in town rather than go anywhere because we didnt want to get caught in traffic, said Gair, who lives in the citys historical center and works at Antique Revival on Main Street. Its just easier to stay here locally.
But those who have been patient with the mammoth work zone not only the citys 47,385 residents but also the estimated 250,000 drivers who use the highway each day are about to be rewarded.

LinkedIn adds university pages in push for younger users
MOUNTAIN VIEW, California -- Hoping to attract younger users, the career-oriented social network LinkedIn announced Monday that it's adding a feature for universities to promote themselves and will allow students as young as 14 to open accounts.
"This is a way we can engage kids in their future," said LinkedIn product manager Christina Allen. "We've done a huge amount of research with parents and universities and we saw how powerful it is to give these insights to students."
LinkedIn has been aimed at an audience of professionals and college students aged 18 or older, Allen said, but 14 "is really about when kids these days are starting to think about colleges."
The network's new "university pages," which resemble the "company pages" that many employers maintain on the site, are designed to let users follow news from different schools, find information and ask questions of faculty or students. They include tools for sorting LinkedIn's membership data to researching things like the kind of jobs a particular school's graduates have landed, or where employees of a particular company earned their degrees.

Three construction workers burned after cleaning product caught fire at North Richland Hills house
Three workers were burned in a North Richland Hills house fire Monday morning after a paint thinner caught fire.
Firefighters were called to an one-alarm fire about 10 a.m. Monday at a home in the 8000 block of Arlie Lane near North Tarrant Parkway. Workers were refinishing the floors in the home when the paint thinner caught fire, said North Richland Hills assistant fire chief Kirk Marcum.
The men jumped into the swimming pool on the property to extinguish themselves, fire officials said.
Two of the men were airlifted to Parkland Memorial Hospital with burns covering 80 percent of their bodies, and a third was transported by ambulance. The conditions of the men were unknown.

Ted Cruz can officially run for Canadian Parliament
Like President Barack Obama before him, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has released a copy of his birth certificate to the press, proving that he is, in fact, a citizen of the United States. The document, given to The Dallas Morning News, shows that Cruz, whose father is of Cuban heritage, was born in 1970 in Calgary, Alberta, to an American mother.
That makes him an American citizen at birth, meaning that he is eligible to run for president of the United States, according to a scholarly investigation by the Congressional Research Service. (Technically, someone could challenge his candidacy in court.) Indeed, Cruz's decision to release the certificate is the latest evidence that he is mulling a run in 2016.
But he also has a potential back-up plan if a presidential bid goes sour: The Canadian Parliament.
Yes, he could take his brand of fiery conservatism north of the border thanks to the fact that he is also, technically, a Canadian citizen. While Cruz spokesman Catherine Frazier might disagree, telling the press that "he never had Canadian citizenship, so there is nothing to renounce," multiple legal experts told the Dallas Morning News that the senator is Canadian whether he likes it or not, thanks to the country's Citizenship Act of 1947.

Man swims 3 miles to shore in Texas boat mishap
FREEPORT, Texas (AP) Officials say a man wearing a life jacket who fell from his sailboat in the Gulf of Mexico off Texas has survived by swimming about 3 miles to shore.
The Coast Guard on Sunday didn't immediately release the name of the 51-year-old survivor.
The Brazoria County Sheriff's Department on Saturday night called the Coast Guard to report a sailboat washed up on Surfside Beach with no one aboard.
The Coast Guard in Houston and Freeport launched a search by air and boat. Searchers about an hour later spotted the man on the beach in an area where the sailboat was recovered. The man told rescuers he fell off the boat and swam to shore.

Judge bars most motive evidence in Fort Hood trial (Maj. Hasan case)
Source: Austin American-Statesman
The prosecution in the court-martial of Maj. Nidal Hasan will not be able to use evidence from the Army psychiatrists days at Walter Reed Medical Center nor evidence from a court-martial stemming from a 2003 fatal attack on U.S. soldiers.
Prosecutors planned to present about 10 witnesses this week who would testify to alarming statements the accused Fort Hood shooter made during academic presentations at the hospital last decade when he was a psychiatric resident.
Military judge Col. Tara Osborn said the evidence, including Hasans inquiry into obtaining conscientious objector status based on his religion in 2006 or 2007, is too remote and subject to too many interpretations.
She also excluded evidence from the court-martial of Sgt. Hasan Akbar, a Muslim soldier sentenced to death for a 2003 grenade and shooting attack that killed two of his fellow soldiers in Kuwait. Prosecutor Col. Steve Hendricks has called Hasans Nov. 5, 2009, shooting a copycat attack.
