A group of Llano County citizens have sought and obtained a temporary restraining order from State District Judge Dan Mills that prohibits the Llano Independent School District from using CSCOPE lesson plans until the State Board of Education has approved those plans.

Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and State Rep. Steve Toth will stand with WomenOnTheWall.org Board Member Alice Linahan, Llano taxpayer Bill Hussey and attorney Tim Cowart to make this announcement at a news conference at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Senate Press Room at the State Capitol in Austin.

Johnny Football’s bandwagon has become too dizzy

I don’t know where I jumped off the Johnny Football bandwagon, but I think it was somewhere between his parents trademarking his nickname and that national column that compared him to Oprah.

The ride was fun while it lasted, though. Before Johnny Manziel arrived in Aggieland, with ominous moving-to-the-SEC drums rumbling, the official Texas A&M team car may as well have been a hearse. Now, it seems, it’s a black Mercedes-Benz, paid for by his daddy, with new rims.

Ah, the rims. If you believe the latest story, Manziel needed money for the rims. So he allegedly broke one of the easiest NCAA rules to remember:

Thou shalt not sell your stuff.

State Fair didn’t find a taker for Cotton Bowl’s naming rights. Will add Fair Park Coliseum to deal

In 2008 the Dallas City Council agreed to let the State Fair of Texas pursue naming rights for the Cotton Bowl, known solely as the Cotton Bowl for 83 years. But, clearly, that didn’t take; it’s still the Cotton Bowl. Still, the State Fair’s not ready to give up, especially in the wake of Jerry Jones’ rechristening Cowboys Stadium “AT&T Stadium” for the right price.

So on Thursday the Park Board will extend the State Fair’s naming-rights contract. It’s little more than a formality. But there is one twist: The city will allow the State Fair to sweeten the pot by adding another Fair Park landmark to the deal. Any company willing to snap up the Cotton Bowl’s naming rights will also get to rebrand the 28,000-square-foot Coliseum, the former home of the Dallas Black Hawks (and the Assassination City Roller Derby) that also used to be an active concert venue back when Guns N’ Roses and Nirvana were in ascension.

“There’s nothing imminent with naming rights,” says Willis Winters, head of the city’s Park and Recreation Department. “The economy still is what it is.” Winters says “we can hope the timing’s better than it was five years ago,” but “there’s nothing definite.” Perhaps the Coliseum is just the kickstarter the deal needs.

The city hopes a sponsorship deal brings in between $500,000 and $1 million annually — money that would go back into the Cotton Bowl, which is in the midst of yet another round of renovations (which cost around $25 million) following the $50-million overhaul unveiled in 2008. But that projected revenue may prove to be just wishful thinking; as Winters reminds, again, “There’s nothing imminent.”

Man claiming to be Michelle Obama's adopted son arrested at bank

Johnnie Gooden

A College Station man who told police he was adopted by First Lady Michelle Obama after she contacted him on Facebook was taken into custody following a bizarre incident at a Bryan bank.

Authorities responded to Chase Bank on Boonville Road after an employee alerted police to a suspicious customer Saturday morning. The employee told an officer the man asked to access Obama's account and wouldn't leave after being told there wasn't such an account, according to the arrest report.

The 29-year-old man told officers that Obama let him know about the adoption Friday, so Saturday he was trying to access her bank account, the report states. He stopped talking to police after an officer said he was lying, the documents state.

Authorities ran a background check on Johnnie Gooden and found he was wanted in Brazos County on charges of resisting arrest and assault of a public servant. After police arrested Gooden, they found a bag filled with marijuana in a pocket of his cargo shorts, according to the report.

Sen. Ted Cruz revs up Iowa conservatives, vowing end to IRS and Obamacare

AMES, Iowa – Sen. Ted Cruz spent the afternoon in Iowa, revving up a crowd of conservative activists in his second visit in two weeks. He asked them, as he often does, to text him their cell phone numbers – the modern way to build list of donors and volunteers.

But don’t jump to any conclusions about 2016 ambitions, he said.

Texas has been hot this week so he was glad for the chance to get away, he joked, demurring when asked whether he’s eyeing the White House.

“I am traveling the country working to build a grassroots army and the biggest fight facing Congress right now is the fight to defund Obamacare,” he said, adding, “My focus here today, my focus every day in the Senate, is on standing up and fighting for conservative principles.”

Democrat Michael Cole Will Challenge Congressman Steve Stockman in East Texas

An East Texas Democrat has emerged as a challenger in TX-36 to Congressman Steve Stockman's antics on Capitol Hill. The 36th Congressional District is Southern-fried freedom loving country that stretches East from Pasadena through the pine curtain up to Jasper and also includes "Liberty County", the San Jacinto monument, and the Big Thicket National Park. The area isn't known for producing the most progressive candidates, but Democrats in the area are hoping for someone who won't make them the laughing Stock' (pun intended) of Congress.

Michael Cole, an educator for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville school district may be the man they are looking for. His passion for education and personal experience with our healthcare system (he is an amputee) give him the personal platform to run, but he also has a solid grasp on a surprising number of issues facing our current Congress. On Tuesday, he held a Q and A on Facebook with voters to answer questions ranging from his voting history to preserving Medicare and womens' rights. Even Though the bar is set low for improving on the policy positions of Stockman, the queries from participants weren't exactly softballs.

-snip-

The takeaway for Texas Democrats at large is that we need more individuals like Cole to step up and run for their local, state and federal offices, particularly those with unopposed Republican incumbents. Cole is an East Texas man with East Texas values, and for all what the conservative's brand of crazy has done to own that part of our state, he stands unapologetically as a Democrat. His responses weren't generic partyline talking points or copy and pasted from Barack Obama's campaign site, but were thoughtful and tailored to his local audience. Grassroots campaigns like Cole's will be crucial as we work on building the infrastructure to turn Texas blue.

Stockman at one time was homeless until he became a "born again Christian", but his commitment to Republican values shows his lack of compassion to the unfortunate--contrary to what most people would associate as Christian values. He introduced the "Safe Schools Act" that would repeal federal laws mandating "gun free zones" around schools. He also voted against the re-authorization of the Violence Against Women Act in February 2013, saying:

"This is a truly bad bill. This is helping the liberals, this is horrible. Unbelievable. What really bothers—it's called a women's act, but then they have men dressed up as women, they count that. Change-gender, or whatever. How is that—how is that a woman?"

The 36th Congressional District includes all of Newton, Jasper, Tyler, Polk, Orange, Hardin, Liberty, and Chambers counties, plus portions of southeastern Harris County. This district was created after the 2010 census is heavily skewed in favor of Republicans. He defeated his Democratic opponent Max Owen Martin, a retired pilot from Clear Lake City by capturing 71% of the electorate compared to 27% for Martin. (paraphrased from Wikipedia)

Planning a night out at the strip club just got easier in Houston

A new service is coming to Houston on Sept. 1 that should make planning your evening entertainment a little bit easier.

Gentlemen's Review goes live next month across the country, enabling gentlemen's club patrons to review pictures of featured dancers, check on dress codes, drink specials, and even reserve VIP tables and rooms.

This should be a Godsend to planners of bachelor parties.

Entertainers can also submit their profile pictures and enter to win a contest to be named the Entertainer Of The Month for their area. This contest takes place every month in 77 districts, according to Gentlemen's Review.

A few years ago when I lived in Irving one of my young friends asked me this question when one of his friends was having a bachelor party in Austin. I had to call one of my friends who then gave me the phone number for his brother in order to provide appropriate guidance. I'm so thankful that this badly needed service is available, particularly since I never went to any of those clubs in Houston.

House Republicans see body floating in Rio Grande during tour of border

MISSION, Texas (AP) - The chairman of the House Homeland Security committee said Tuesday in South Texas that the U.S. Border Patrol's resources in the area are "woefully inadequate."

U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, made the comments after cruising the Rio Grande with Border Patrol and Texas Department of Public Safety officials in Mission.

McCaul's House bill calling for a plan to secure the border is expected to be the first of several immigration-related bills taken up after the chamber's August recess. McCaul is also leading a group of congressmen along the border, stopping this weekend in California and Arizona. Accompanying McCaul on Tuesday were U.S. Reps. Kevin Yoder, R-Kansas, and Leonard Lance, R-New Jersey.

The stakes of immigration reform were made evident to the group when they encountered a body floating in the Rio Grande on Tuesday.

That puts Cameron County No. 1 in the nation. Starr County comes in second in the nation with 59.5 percent and Hidalgo County third with 58.8 percent.

The study was produced by the left-leaning Center for American Progress Action Fund and is titled “The Counties that Need the Affordable Care Act the Most.” Its authors are Anna Chu and Charles Posner.

Counties on the Texas-Mexico border dominate the various “30 Worst” lists provided by the study.
