Sons of Confederate Veterans take UT statue case to Texas high court

A state appeals court denied a request Friday from the Sons of Confederate Veterans to block a lower court ruling that cleared the way for the University of Texas to move statues of Jefferson Davis and Woodrow Wilson off of its Main Mall.

The Texas branch of the group and two individuals then asked the Texas Supreme Court to issue an emergency injunction. That request was pending Friday evening.

On Thursday, Karin Crump, a state District Court judge in Travis County, denied the plaintiffs’ request for a temporary injunction that would have barred UT from moving the bronze likenesses of Davis, who was president of the Confederate states, and Wilson, the nation’s 28th president. Crump said state law grants UT authority over its statues.

Attorneys for the Confederate group had likened UT’s plan to the destruction of statuary and other cultural works in the Mideast by the Islamic State group, and argued the statues could be damaged if they are moved.

University of North Texas to expand to Frisco

DENTON -- The University of North Texas is expanding to Frisco, pending university officials signing a lease for roughly 30,000 square feet for offices and classrooms.

A new center, combining efforts from several colleges at the Denton campus, will feature a crime data center, new degree programs that have yet to be announced and courses like data and web analytics and graphic design.

“You can think about it as having business communications and technology as the core activities, but we’ll be able to offer other build-to-suit degree programs that offer site-specific workforce development for one of the hottest regions in America,” UNT President Neal Smatresk said.

There will be a soft opening for the center in January, and a full launch of programs in fall 2016. It will be staffed with a mix of faculty and staff from Denton, as well as new hires, and Smatresk estimates it will serve up to 500 students a year.

Jay Dardenne points out his lack of prostitution participation as compared to David Vitter

Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne was the only gubernatorial candidate to show for a WRKF forum on Friday night, according to a Twitter posting.

Dardenne opted to field questions from the audience which included the topics of education, film production tax credits and dealing with Baton Rouge traffic woes.

One question asked of Dardenne was how is he different than U.S. Sen. David Vitter, to which he responded "I have not frequented prostitution (at all), especially not while on the floor of the US Congress."

Sheriff’s deputy fatally shot in Houston while pumping gas in his patrol car

HOUSTON — A sheriff’s deputy in uniform was shot and killed Friday night while filling up his patrol car at a suburban Houston gas station, according to authorities.

Deputy Darren Goforth, 47, was pumping gas into his vehicle when a man approached him from behind and fired multiple shots, Harris County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ryan Sullivan told The Associated Press. Once the deputy fell to the ground, the suspect fired more shots.

Goforth was a 10-year veteran of the force.

Police described the suspect as a male with a dark complexion, about 5-foot-10 to 6-feet tall, wearing a white T-shirt and red shorts and driving a red or maroon pickup-style truck with an extended cab. They said an intensive search for the suspect remained ongoing Saturday morning.

Did opposition by Hensarling to Ex-Im Bank prompt GE to rule out relocation to Dallas?

WASHINGTON — Rep. Jeb Hensarling’s fierce opposition to the Ex-Im Bank might have cost his home city a major relocation. That’s the message from GE to Dallas-area business leaders, according to a report published this afternoon by Bloomberg News, citing “people familiar with the matter.”

GE, based in Fairfield, Ct., would be Texas’s third-largest company should it relocate there. It is ranked 8th on the Fortune 500 list, ahead of Dallas-based AT&T, which is 12th.

GE’s overseas customers rely heavily on loans, insurance or loan guarantees offered by the venerable federal agency, which is a bank in name only. The Ex-Im Bank provides credit or credit insurance for foreign customers who buy American goods.

Hensarling has been the most pronounced critic of the bank in Congress, and has over the past two years led what was at first a small movement against the bank into a full-fledged revolt.

Abbott announced anti-abortion intiative, targets Planned Parenthood

Gov. Greg Abbott announced an anti-abortion initiative Friday in response to last month’s undercover videos which showed Planned Parenthood representatives discussing the legal practice of harvesting tissue from aborted fetuses. The announcement signals a continued effort to restrict abortions in Texas.

Abbott’s initiative, dubbed LIFE, spells out a broad legislative effort to further penalize doctors who violate laws governing the procedure in Texas, one of the most restrictive states. It also signals the governor’s goal to wrest state and federal funding of Planned Parenthood completely, even though by law public money cannot pay for abortions.

The governor’s announcement is the latest reaction to videos released last month by the anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress, which showed a Planned Parenthood doctor in California discussing how some clinics harvest and donate tissue from aborted fetuses — a legal practice so long as tissues aren’t sold for profit.

“Gruesome – and potentially illegal – harvesting of baby body parts by Planned Parenthood cannot be allowed in Texas,” Abbott said in a statement “Treating unborn children as commodities to be sold is an abomination. The barbaric practice of harvesting and selling baby body parts must end.”
