Bredesen, Blackburn win primaries in race for US Senate
Source: AP
NASHVILLE, Tenn. Former Tennessee Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen and Republican U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn have been running their campaigns for a critical U.S. Senate seat like their matchup was assured.
Voters made it official Thursday.
Bredesen and Blackburn disposed of minimal opposition in their primary elections, kicking off what's expected to a bruising, expensive fight that could determine Democrats' chances of overturning the 51-49 Republican Senate majority.
Polls have indicated a close contest to replace retiring Republican Sen. Bob Corker.

Democrats widen voter registration advantage for 4th straight month
Republicans are losing ground on voter registrations from month to month after seeing some gains at the start of the year.
Democrats have widened their voter registration advantage for the fourth month in a row, according to July numbers released today by the Secretary of States Office. Statewide, voter registrations rose nearly .4 percent.
There were more than 66,000 more Democrats than Republicans in the state in July, a margin that widened from over 65,600 in June, over 62,000 in May and over 61,000 in April.
Republicans had been chipping away at the gap earlier this year, reducing the Democratic edge from over 75,000 in January to over 73,000 in February, to over 59,000 in March.

Parts of Lynchburg evacuate over possible dam failure
LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) Heavy rains have prompted authorities to evacuate parts of a central Virginia city in case a dam fails and floods the area.
A failure of the College Lake Dam near Lynchburg could flood the city with 17 feet (5 meters) of water in seven minutes, news outlets reported Thursday evening, citing statements from the National Weather Service. The service said county officials reported the dam's "imminent failure" at around 9:30 p.m.
The Lynchburg Water Resources Department says up to six inches (15 centimeters) of rain fell Thursday, causing College Lake to fill beyond its capacity. It said that up to 18 inches of water from the lake overflowed onto a road and into a nearby creek.
Lynchburg has a population of about 80,000.

A Nevada prisoner was accused of sending threatening letters to a Reno federal judge after she dismissed a lawsuit he had filed against several correctional officers in Las Vegas.

RGJ poll: Heller-Rosen, Nevada governor races in dead heat. More on Question 3, brothels
Undecided voters could play a major role in Nevada come November as the race for U.S. Senate and governor are locked in a virtual dead heat.
The contest for U.S. Senate between Republican incumbent Dean Heller and Democratic challenger Rep. Jacky Rosen is statistically tied in the Silver State, according to a Suffolk University/Reno Gazette Journal poll released Tuesday.
The same was observed in the race to replace Gov. Brian Sandoval, with Democrat Steve Sisolak and Republican Adam Laxalt virtually tied in their race as well.
The wide-ranging poll also gauged voters on a variety of issues facing Nevada, including Question 3 the push to amend the state constitution to deregulate Nevada's energy market whether to enforce voter-approved universal background checks for gun sales and legalized prostitution.

Cortez Masto slams Wells Fargo for laying off hundreds in Reno, outsourcing jobs
One of Nevada's top politicians is questioning Wells Fargos decision to lay off hundreds of Reno employees and outsourcing call center jobs despite reaping significant benefits from the tax cuts passed last year.
In a letter to Wells Fargo CEO Timothy Sloan obtained by the Reno Gazette Journal on Wednesday, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., slammed the company for laying off about 340 employees after it announced plans in June to close its Reno call center.
Cortez Masto questioned the timing of the layoffs, which is occurring just six months after the passage of the tax reform bill that was signed into law by President Donald Trump in December.
It is alarming that these layoffs are occurring despite the astronomical benefits that Wells Fargo will receive from the recently passed Tax Cut and Jobs Act of 2017, Cortez Masto wrote.

Strangers give $90K to send gay valedictorian to college after parents reject him
What began as a community GoFundMe page to send a gay valedictorian rejected by his parents to college has exploded, multiplying by thousands of dollars a day.
The story of Jacksonville, Fla. student Seth Owen, 18, has prompted thousands to give.
The original goal was to raise $20,000, the tuition bill for Georgetown University, where Owen is headed in the fall. He'd originally had a financial aid package, but it was contingent on parental support.
In the single day since NBC News reported about Owen's parents kicking him out of his home and his Georgetown University scholarship being threatened, his GoFundMe page has soared to more than $90,000. It continues to grow.

Are Nevada's small desert towns ready for Burning Man's population to hit 100,000?
'It is overwhelming'
The town of Gerlach has a saying: Is it October yet?
Gerlach, population 110 give or take, is the last stop before 80,000 people get to the Black Rock Desert each year in the months leading up to Burning Man, the notorious arts celebration held each year over Labor Day weekend.
During the off-season, the few businesses in town a gas station, diner, motel and coffee shop/bar cater to ranchers, rocketeers, hunters and truckers passing through.
But during Burning Man season, the town is abuzz with Burners. They start arriving before July. By the end of September, almost all of them are gone.

Black Rock Desert's design was that of Rod Garrett, whose initial design was somewhat different when first applied in 1997.
