Aid to dying: What Jainism -- one of India's oldest religions -- teaches us

On June 9, a law allowing patients with terminal illnesses to end their lives with help from a physician came into effect in California, opening conversations about whether human life should be prolonged against the desire to die peacefully and with dignity.

A similar yet different conversation has been taking place in India for the past several years, but in reverse.

In one of India’s religious traditions, Jainism, those at the end of life can choose to embrace a final fast transition from one body to another. However, a recent court case has challenged the constitutionality of this practice. As an expert in the religions of India and a frequent visitor, I have been following this issue with keen interest.

A rite to final passage

While on a visit to a Jain university in Ladnun, Rajasthan in western India in 1989, I had an opportunity to observe the practice of “Sallekhana” or “Santhara,” a somber rite through which one fasts to death.

A return to house calls could be a money-saver for Medicare

Looking for ways to save money and improve care, Medicare officials are returning to an old-fashioned idea: house calls.

But the experiment, called Independence at Home, is more than a nostalgic throwback to the way medicine was practiced decades ago when the doctor arrived at the patient’s door carrying a big black bag. Done right and paid right, house calls could prove to be a better way of treating very sick, elderly patients while they can still live at home.

Brown Mackie College shutting down many campuses throughout the country

Brown Mackie parent Education Management Corp. on Friday announced it would stop enrolling new students at 22 of the school's 26 campuses, including the one at Circle Centre mall. The for-profit education company plans to continue serving existing students through June 2018, spokesman Bob Greenlee said.

The decision "largely relates to regional and student demand," Greenlee said. "Demand at various programs and at various campuses is what drove the decision to cease enrolling new students."

Brown Mackie's plan to ramp down most of its campuses comes as for-profit educators are getting pummeled by the federal government amid accusations of misleading advertising and poor employment options for graduates. Pittsburgh-based Education Management in November reached an agreement to pay the government $95.5 million to settle claims that it used high-pressure tactics to recruit students.

Carmel-based ITT Educational Services Inc. is facing the loss of its accreditation as part of the government crackdown on for-profit colleges.
