TexasTowelie's JournalTX gubernatorial candidate believes gays should be put to death, but will focus on secession in 2014
Texas gubernatorial candidate Larry SECEDE Kilgore says he believes that, in accordance with the Bible, gay people should be put to death.
However, Kilgore says that for now, hes putting that position aside along with some of his other extreme views so he can focus on one thing and one thing only in 2014: secession for Texas.
Kilgore, who legally changed his middle name to SECEDE in 2012, is a telecommunications contractor who lives in Arlington. He is also a perennial pro-secession candidate who is again running for governor as a Republican next year.
In addition to secession, Kilgore has previously advocated the death penalty for those who undergo abortions or commit adultery, along with otherwise strict adherence to so-called biblical law. But along with his views on LGBT issues, hes putting all that aside this go-round.

Chainsaw Artist Surprised By Buzz Over ‘Hook ’Em’ Statue
Credit: Gene Davis
A carving that turned a dead tree into a Hook Em Horns sculpture has understandably generated plenty of buzz in the North Austin neighborhood where it sits and hand-signals.
The sculpture commissioned by Longhorn fan Gabriel Trinidad for his front yard made the news and, on an early Tuesday afternoon, caused multiple people to stop their cars and snap a photo. However, one person is a bit perplexed by all the attention the sculpture has received: Doug Moreland, the Texas Chainsaw Artist and musician responsible the artwork.
Moreland, who is currently working on carving a tree into a dragonfly in another persons yard, said he was surprised when people gathered around to watch him carve the UT sculpture in the Northwest Austin neighborhood.
When I carved something at my house by Manchaca, the traffic there is ridiculous, but no one even looks at me, he said. But when I was out there (carving the UT sculpture), there would be 50 people standing around.

Unplug the Christmas Tree: Managing the Holidays
By Dr. Brian CarrPresident, Behavioral Health Associates, Lubbock, Texas, 1991-Present

Between Thanksgiving and the New Year the majority of my therapy sessions involve managing the stress of the holidays. Disruptions in regular work and school schedules, having to travel significant distances to visit, and the pursuit of the perfect Christmas gift result in a major stress load on people.
For many years during this season I have taught a Sunday School lesson entitled Unplug the Christmas Tree. The lesson offers some historical reference on how Christmas came about and the practices associated with the season.
The first point I like to make about this holiday season is to remember that traditions have a beginning and they have an ending. When one mindlessly pulls out a long list of traditions it can lead to significant stress as one tradition is mounted onto another. Everybodys favorite food dish grows as new members of the family are added. A holiday meal becomes an orgy of excessive food preparation and consumption. A mandate that long-standing traditions be honored can put one on the roof stringing lights in sub-zero weather.
Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof reminds us all of the importance of tradition, right up to the point where we face change and new beginnings. We are charmed by the idea that as long as we preserve the past we need not change, no matter how much this shift may improve our lives.

Harris GOP chair accuses Mayor Parker of promoting ‘mob rule’ by extending benefits to gay partners
Harris County GOP chair Jared Woodfill says Houston Mayor Annise Parker is promoting mob rule and anarchy by extending benefits to the married same-sex partners of city employees, according to the right-wing news site WorldNetDaily:
He said that if the city loses the rule of law, we give into to mob rule and crony politics, aptly described once as the Chicago way.
Texas and Houston will not permit would-be anarchy to become the default standard of government in this city, he said.
Woodfill and others, including Dave Welch of the U.S. Pastors Council and Jonathan Saenz of Texas Values, are threatening to file a lawsuit challenging same-sex partner benefits in Houston. However, one expert told Lone Star Q its doubtful that a Texas court would grant them standing.
Of course, the irony here is that mob rule is what happens when a tyrannical majority strips the civil rights of an oppressed minority which is exactly what happened when Texas voters approved the 2005 constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

Prosecutor on the defense: Travis County DA Rosemary Lehmberg goes on trial for her job
Case could include testimony about her mental health, alcohol use, leadership traits.
Almost eight months ago, Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg was caught driving drunk, beginning a public drama that has included unexpected twists and turns and political sideshows that have stretched from her office to the state Capitol.
On the morning after her arrest, Lehmberg, serving her second term, seemed almost surprised when a TV reporter asked her outside her home if she would resign. She vowed she wouldnt.
But beginning Monday, Lehmbergs future as the countys top felony prosecutor will fall into the hands of an out-of-county judge, who will hear evidence in a full-scale civil trial about whether she will remain in an office she overwhelmingly won in an election last year or, in effect, be fired.
The trial is expected to draw large numbers of spectators, from Lehmberg supporters and detractors to impartial observers who want to witness the novelty of a trial to remove an elected official from office under a rarely used Texas law.

Cross-post: Texas Dems use CPRIT indictment against likely GOP governor nominee Abbott
AUSTIN Democrats are using Fridays announcement that Travis County prosecutors are pursuing felony charges in their now-concluded CPRIT investigation to blast Republican gubernatorial hopeful Greg Abbott, who sat on the board of the troubled state cancer agency.
Its not the first time that Abbotts role in failing to maintain a critical eye on the state cancer agency has surfaced. But Fridays news provided fresh attack fodder for his opponents in the middle of a heated gubernatorial race.
In a statement, Sen. Wendy Davis, the Forth Worth Democrat running for governor, chided Abbott, the state attorney general, for a lack of oversight while an $11 million grant was awarded without proper agency review that led to criminal charges.
The indictment of a former CPRIT official confirms that Greg Abbott has betrayed Texas taxpayers by failing to show up to even one CPRIT oversight board meeting, Davis said. Greg Abbott has yet to fully explain why he failed in his basic oversight responsibilities to Texas taxpayers.

Shaking it up: Texas politics gay style
If elected, Louie Minor would become the first openly gay member of Congress from Texas and the first gay veteran and first gay Hispanic to serve.
Louie Minor has a lot of titles: veteran, father, Democratic candidate, and he hopes to add Texas first openly gay congressman to the list next fall.
Minor, 34, is challenging Republican incumbent John Carter in the Republican-leaning Congressional District 31. The suburban Austin district includes all of Williamson County and most of Bell County, from a portion of north Austin to Temple. It also includes Fort Hood.
Carter, first elected in 2002, has received a zero each session on the Human Rights Campaign Congressional Scorecard, which rates members of Congress on their support for LGBT issues.
A native of CD 31, Minor grew up in Belton. Hes a veteran and a captain in the Army Reserves, and has spent a decade in the military, even serving 14 months with the Texas National Guard in 200809.
