Parnas: I Met Devin Nunes 'Several Times,' He 'Knows Who I Am'

Source: dailybeast

Published Jan. 15, 2020 10:59PM ET

Lev Parnas, an indicted ex-associate of Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow on Wednesday night that he had met Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) “several times,” adding that Nunes and his aide Derek Harvey were involved in digging up dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden. Asked if it struck him as unusual that Nunes, the House Intelligence Committee ranking member, was one of the leaders in the impeachment inquiry, Parnas said he “was in shock” since Nunes and Harvey “were involved in getting all this stuff on Biden.”

“He was sitting there and making all these statements and all that when he knew very well that he knew what was going on,” Parnas added. “He knew what was happening. He knows who I am.” Nunes, meanwhile, has denied any involvement with Parnas or the Ukraine scandal. On Wednesday night, however, Nunes suddenly remembered that he did indeed speak to Parnas on the phone last year, something that had previously been revealed in call logs released by Congress.

Dangling disaster relief funds, White House to require Puerto Rico to implement reforms

Source: wash post

Jan. 15, 2020 at 1:57 p.m. CST

PONCE, Puerto Rico — The Trump administration plans to impose several new requirements on billions of dollars in aid for Puerto Rico, including a new restriction on the wages paid by the island’s government to contractors working on disaster relief, according to two officials with knowledge of the plan.
.................................

Under the parameters the Trump administration is proposing, Puerto Rico’s government will have to agree to give new oversight authority to the island’s federally mandated Fiscal Control Board — an appointed, independent government body — to receive funding for certain federal projects, officials said. Puerto Rico also will have to agree to pay federal contractors working on disaster relief less than $15 an hour, despite a recent executive order mandating the rate.

Hit by devastating earthquakes, Puerto Rico still waiting on billions for hurricane relief

Puerto Rico’s government also will have to agree to create a new system for registering properties and deeds, a move aimed at curbing fraud in requests for federal reimbursement, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal plans. A fourth requirement would mandate that none of the disaster mitigation funding go toward the island’s electrical grid, which is notoriously frail and has at times left residents without power for months.

.................................

“The help comes, but it comes one drop at a time,” said Elizabeth Ocasio, deputy mayor of Ponce. “We needed to strengthen these structures after the hurricane. Now, we have greater damage.”

Congressional Democrats and Puerto Rico officials have denounced the Trump administration for stalling aid that could assist the island’s slow and difficult recovery. Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.), who chairs the committee that oversees U.S. territories, said the process is starting to move, but Puerto Rico faces a specific set of challenges as a cash-strapped island pressured under an austerity program.

“This has been a painful delaying tactic,” Grijalva said.

.......................

............................

José B. Carrión III, chairman of the fiscal board, said in an interview that more authority “is not something we sought” but that the board is happy to help the federal government get more funding out the door.

“We are not looking at this as a power play,” Carrión said. “We want to do our part so the federal government feels comfortable, and the funds flow to the people of Puerto Rico who need them. We want to get away from Puerto Rico being a problem situation.”

Congress has approved $42 billion for the island’s recovery, but only a portion of that money has been allocated.

The $8.3 billion in disaster mitigation funding was approved by Congress to protect parts of the island prone to natural disasters, such as by building water pumps where flash flooding occurs, said Deepak Lamba-Nieves, research director at Puerto Rico’s Center for a New
Earlier this month, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) accused the Trump administration of illegally holding the money and called on the White House to “cease and desist.”............................

Trump Asks JPMorgan Leader to Say 'Thank You, Mr. President'

Source: bloomberg

January 15, 2020, 12:33 PM CST Updated on January 15, 2020, 2:01 PM CST

A smiling President Donald Trump thanked some of the biggest U.S. companies for about 10 minutes on Wednesday at the White House, where he was celebrating his trade deal with China. When it came to JPMorgan Chase & Co., he asked for reciprocation.

“They just announced earnings and they were incredible,” he said as he greeted Mary Erdoes, who heads asset and wealth management for the biggest U.S. bank. “They were very substantial. Will you say, ‘Thank you, Mr. President,’ at least, huh?” JPMorgan on Tuesday posted the most profitable year for any U.S. bank in history.

“I made a lot of bankers look very good. But you’re doing a great job.” He told her to “say hello” to the firm’s billionaire chief executive officer, Jamie Dimon. “I think we’re seeing him tomorrow.”

Capitol Hill is ‘furious’ after Trump’s State Department abruptly cancelled briefing ‘required by law’

Published 1 min ago on January 15, 2020

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is receiving heat after the State Department stood-up Congress one day after damning text messages showed associates of Rudy Giuliani targeted an American ambassador, according to a new report.

“The State Department abruptly canceled a classified congressional briefing Wednesday that was supposed to focus on embassy security, a House aide said, infuriating Capitol Hill staffers seeking answers on alleged Iranian threats to U.S. missions overseas,” Politico reported Wednesday.

“The cancellation also coincides with documents suggesting that associates of President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani put the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine under surveillance,” Politico noted.

The publication spoke to one House aide about the reaction on Capitol Hill.

“Staff are furious,” the aide said. “This briefing is required by law every month, and today’s was the most important we’ve had scheduled in a long time. The State Department has given us no explanation whatsoever.”

The chair of the House Foreign Relations Committee, Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY) has demanded an investigation into embassy security......................

Trump: Saudi Arabia paid the US $1 billion for more troops. Pentagon: Eh, not quite.

Source: vox.com

Trump seemingly announced a major deal during his latest Fox News interview, but officials are walking it back.

By Aaron Rupar@atrupar Jan 14, 2020, 1:20pm EST

............Trump’s comments immediately raised questions: Into which bank account did Saudi Arabia deposit the $1 billion? What exactly are US troops doing over there? And did this transaction even happen, or was the president just making stuff up?

Days later, we’ve learned a bit more about what Trump was talking about. And it seems the president, as he often does, was exaggerating.

In a statement to Vox, Pentagon spokesperson Cmdr. Rebecca Rebarich said, “The Department of Defense has engaged Saudi Arabia on contributing to US activities that support regional security and dissuade hostility and aggression.”

But the statement did not specify whether any sort of financial transaction took place — on the contrary, it said that “discussions are ongoing to formalize these contributions.”

Here’s Rebarich’s statement in full:..................

..............Trump’s comments came during an interview in which he bragged about war crimes, told blatant lies about the FBI, and said he feels no obligation to publicly detail the intelligence underpinning his decision to approve a military strike against an Iranian official that brought the country to the brink of war....................

Exaggerating?? heck no! Trump outright LIED as usual.

"Any of those remarks from the mouth of the president would’ve likely generated a major scandal in a previous era. But three years in, Trump has normalized gaslighting and authoritarian rhetoric to such an extent that this interview with Ingraham barely registered as a blip on the news radar."
