The Covid vaccine doesn't cause infertility, but the disease might

Source: nbc news

The symptoms of Covid-19 could affect both male and female fertility in different ways.

Oct. 12, 2021, 7:27 AM CDT / Updated Oct. 12, 2021, 11:12 AM CDT

Worries that the Covid-19 vaccine could cause infertility are among the reasons people give for avoiding vaccination. While there’s no evidence any of the Covid vaccines cause problems with fertility, becoming severely ill from the disease has the potential to do so, reproduction experts say, making vaccination all the more important.

“There is evidence to suggest that infection with SARS-CoV-2 has the potential to impact both male fertility, female fertility, and certainly the health of a pregnancy of someone infected,” said Dr. Jennifer Kawwass, a reproductive endocrinologist and associate professor at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. “And there is simultaneously no evidence that the vaccine has any negative impact on male or female fertility.”

Researchers have been studying the effects of Covid on the human reproductive system since the beginning of the pandemic. While there’s no evidence that Covid can be sexually transmitted, research suggests that the cells in the reproductive system are feasible targets for the virus, because they carry some of the receptors the coronavirus must bind to in order to enter cells.

The idea that a virus could cause infertility is not unprecedented. “We do have historic evidence that there are certain viruses that are more likely to impact either male or female fertility,” Kawwass said.

For example, human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV infections have all been linked to decreased fertility. It’s unclear, however, if a respiratory virus, like the coronavirus, could have the same effect. But the fact that male and female reproductive organs have the receptors the Covid virus targets means it’s certainly plausible that the virus could cause fertility issues, she said. .......................................

MAGA Gun Church That Worships With AR-15s Has Bought a Giant Mountain Property in Tennessee

Source: vice

Rod of Iron Ministries has been on a property-buying spree and says it plans to build a training center and spiritual retreat.

by Tess Owen October 12, 2021, 8:48am

The MAGA-loving religious sect that worships with AR-15s has purchased a 130-acre property on a mountain in eastern Tennessee to serve as a “training center” and holy ground for its devoted, gun-toting followers, VICE News has learned.

The latest property acquisition is more evidence that Pastor Hyung Jin “Sean” Moon, a fervent conspiracy theorist and son of an accused cult leader, is determined to expand his reach into the American Heartland.

Moon’s congregation, Rod of Iron Ministries, also known as The World Peace and Unification Sanctuary, is a gun-centric spinoff of the much larger Unification Church, founded by his late father, the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, a self-proclaimed messiah and businessman whose followers were famously known as “Moonies.” The younger Moon, who also goes by “The Second King,” split from the main church amid a dramatic falling-out with his mother about who, between the two of them, was the rightful heir to his father’s empire.

.................................

Sean and Justin Moon, plus other senior church officials, were also at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, and posted videos of themselves emerging from clouds of tear gas. Sean has also courted fringe MAGA-world figures; this weekend, the annual Rod of Iron Freedom Fest at the Kahr Arms headquarters in Greeley will include speakers such as former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, ex–NRA spokesperson Dana Loesch, far-right Proud Boy ally Joey Gibson, and GOP congressional candidate Teddy Daniels. .....................................................................

A Wisconsin brewery is helping parents sue school districts that don't require masks

The parents are suing school districts for rescinding face mask requirements and flouting other federal and state health guidance, filing lawsuits in both of Wisconsin's federal court districts. They're backed by Minocqua Brewing Company of Minocqua, Wis., which sells what it calls "progressive beer" — and whose owner is using its political action committee to help fund the legal fight.

One of the lawsuits says that by axing safety protocols, school board officials "threw students into a COVID-19 'snake pit.' "

It also accuses the board of violating "the 14th Amendment that ensures the right to be safe from state created dangers while in school," as member station WPR reported................................

..............."Wisconsin communities have exploded with the Delta variant because many school districts have dropped all forms of Covid mitigation that were in place last year," Bangstad wrote in a blog post, "due to the shrieking hordes of Tucker Carlson-watching zombies separated from their cerebrums and driven only by their lizard brains."........................................

The former White House coronavirus response coordinator is taking questions from the select committee investigating the Trump administration's handling of the pandemic, which has killed more than 715,000 Americans, two sources told Politico.

Birx has said since leaving the previous administration that her warnings about COVID-19 were censored, but she could provide specific information about Trump's response to the evolving science about the pandemic and share documents to show how the former president and his allies blocked scientists and public health experts from COVID-19 meetings.

FBI raids home of Philadelphia Proud Boys' vice president to gather info about Capitol attack plans

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer

Aaron Whallon Wolkind's lawyer believes the raid was part of the FBI's efforts to build a case against Proud Boys president Zach Rehl, who was arrested in March on charges related to the insurrection.

The FBI raided the home of the vice president of the Proud Boys’ Philadelphia chapter on Friday, seizing his computer, phone, and other electronics to gather information on the Jan. 6 attack at the U.S. Capitol, his lawyer said Monday.

Aaron Whallon Wolkind, 37, woke up around 4 a.m. Friday to more than a dozen federal agents, dressed in riot gear and accompanied by an armored vehicle and battering ram, swarming his Newark, Del., home, and ordering through a loudspeaker that he exit with his hands in the air, his lawyer Jonathon Moseley wrote in a court filing.

Wolkind exited and was handcuffed but not arrested or charged with any crimes. Agents “took all of his computer and computer devices and phones, including an old broken phone,” Moseley said. His girlfriend was also handcuffed but not arrested.

Moseley said he believes the search and seizure was to gather information in the case against Zach Rehl, the self-described president of the Philadelphia Proud Boys, whom Moseley also represents. Rehl was arrested in March on charges he conspired with other leading members of the organization to attack the Capitol and has been in custody in Philadelphia pending trial since.....................................................

USPS mail slowdown sparks lawsuit from 20 state attorneys general

By Aimee Picchi

Updated on: October 8, 2021 / 2:42 PM / MoneyWatch

The U.S. Postal Service's controversial slowdown of mail delivery that began October 1 is sparking a pushback from 20 attorneys general. On Thursday, the state officials — ranging from California to New York — sued the Postal Regulatory Commission, alleging that the federal oversight agency didn't fully vet the broad-ranging plan before the USPS moved forward with it.

The Postal Regulatory Commission, or PRC, is the independent federal agency with oversight over the Postal Service's operations. The lawsuit claims the PRC only examined a small part of a 10-year plan created by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, which the complaint alleges will "transform virtually every aspect of the Postal Service."

The PRC said it has received the lawsuit, and will establish a docket for the matter "and take it under advisement." It said its regulations prohibit it from discussing the issue further.

The docket should be created within a few days, the PRC added. The public "can follow the public proceedings by accessing the Commission's docket system at prc.gov," it said in the emailed statement.

The USPS said in an email that the lawsuit "has no legal or factual merit, and the Postal Service intends to move to dismiss it pursuant to the rules of the Postal Regulatory Commission." It added, "The Postal Service has and will continue to follow all statutory and regulatory requirements as we move forward on implementing our strategic plan to restore service excellence and financial sustainability."

DeJoy has argued that his 10-year plan will "erase" billions of dollars in projected losses over the next decade by boosting revenue through expanded parcel delivery and postage hikes — but his plan also includes slowing mail delivery. The USPS already increased postage costs in August, and this month lowered its delivery standards so that first-class mail could now take as long as 5 days to reach anyone within the U.S., instead of the previous standard of three-day delivery.

The changes represent a "radical" plan that could "destroy the timely mail service that people depend on for medications, bill payments, and business operations in rural parts of the state," North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein said in a Thursday statement.

Local Parents Are Fighting Back Against Anti-Mask School Boards

As the number of new COVID-19 cases across Wisconsin remains high and virus-related outbreaks continue in schools, parents and other community members are stepping up efforts to urge school officials to require face masks and other practices health officials say will slow virus spread.

Many of the state’s largest school districts have implemented COVID-19 mitigation measures such as masks, social distancing, and quarantining of students exposed to the virus. But most mid-size and smaller districts have not adopted such policies, prompting local parent groups to organize in favor of COVID safety, measures supported by two-thirds of Americans.

Among those fighting for more protections in schools is a group of parents and community members in Wausau called Keeping Wausau Kids Safe & Parents Informed. The Wausau School District does not require masks in school. On Wednesday the group paid for a billboard along a city street that states “Hey Wausau School Board … Aren’t Schools Supposed to Teach Science?” COVID-19 activity in the county is classified as "very high," and there are currently 1,552 active virus cases there.

“The Wausau School Board and district administration continue to play politics with our children's health and safety. Zero is the acceptable level of preventable deaths in a public health emergency,” the group said in a statement.

Groups Form Throughout State

Such instances of groups pushing for face masks and other COVID-19 safeguards in schools are becoming increasingly common across the state, education advocates say.
As a statewide surge of COVID-19 cases spurred by the especially dangerous Delta variant continues, and as many schools continue to experience significant outbreaks, parents and others are taking action to convince school boards and administrators to adopt practices, including mandatory face masks, proven to limit virus transmission.

For example, in the Mequon-Thiensville School District, where four school board members face recall after supporting COVID-19 mitigation, a group has formed to back those members. Similarly, an online petition was launched in the Kenosha Unified School District to show support for restoring about $3 million in funding cut from the district budget at its annual meeting that was taken over by a local chapter of a national conservative anti-COVID safety group. Kenosha School Board members said they have faced scrutiny for supporting COVID-19 protections, including masks, and organizers of the petition said they support those protections.

In St. Croix County, parents of students in the Baldwin-Woodville and Osceola school districts told UpNorthNews they are frustrated at the lack of COVID-19 safeguards they say endangers their students.
Parents in the Baldwin-Woodville School District filed a complaint with federal officials about that district’s COVID-19 policies and are circulating a petition urging for their adoption. So far, the school board has still not required masks.

During September, 482 of the 774 new COVID-19 cases in St. Croix County were among people 19 and younger, with 331 of those cases in residents ages 10 to 19. ...............................

.........Trump also shared his thoughts on House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) living with conservative pollster Frank Luntz.

"Uh, that Luntz thing is weird, right? What's that all about?" Trump wondered. "I don't think it's a romance. I think it's just, they know each other or something. I can't imagine. I don't think — I mean, if you're thinking it — but it is weird."

"You know, we're past the age of roommates. You don't do that," Trump admonished.
