Manchin signals he won't support filibuster carve-out for debt hike

Source: the hill

By Jordain Carney - 10/06/21 11:44 AM EDT

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said on Wednesday that he remains opposed to changing the Senate’s legislative filibuster, dealing a blow to progressive hopes to use a rules change as an escape hatch from a fight over the nation's borrowing limit.
...........................

Manchin, speaking to reporters, argued that it’s time for Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to start negotiating.

McConnell and Schumer have not been negotiating on the debt ceiling.

“I truly implore both leaders ... to engage, start working, work this out,” Manchin said.

“We have a responsibility to be the adults... we should not have these artificial crisis,” he added. “Please lead, lead, work together.”

House committee investigating January 6 can't find Trump aide to serve subpoena

Source: CNN

By Ryan Nobles, Zachary Cohen and Annie Grayer, CNN

Updated 6:51 AM ET, Wed October 6, 2021

Washington (CNN)More than a week after subpoenaing former Donald Trump aide Dan Scavino to cooperate with its investigation into the January 6 riot at the US Capitol, the House select committee investigating the attack has been unable to physically serve the subpoena to him, according to multiple sources familiar with the effort.

The news comes just days before the committee's deadline for Scavino and three other close allies of the former President to comply with subpoenas requesting documents by October 7 and a deposition by October 15.

Scavino, Trump's former White House deputy chief of staff, did not respond to CNN's request for comment. One source familiar with the situation joked that the committee should just tweet the subpoena to the former Trump aide since he's been actively trolling the panel there in recent days.

The other Trump aides who have been subpoenaed include former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, former adviser Steve Bannon and Kash Patel, a former chief of staff to then-acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller....................................

Biggest tax haven in U.S.? South Dakota, says Pandora Papers investigation

Source: cbs

October 5, 2021 / 8:16 AM / MoneyWatch

Mention tax havens, and most people imagine small nations with balmy weather.

But South Dakota and a handful of other U.S. states are providing growing competition for places like the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands and Malta, as landing pads for global capital hidden from creditors, tax collectors and law enforcement, according to an investigation published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.

The sparsely populated state best known as the home of Mount Rushmore, now houses $360 billion in trusts, the ICIJ reported — an amount that has quadrupled over the past decade. One local company, the South Dakota Trust Company, has international clients from 54 nations. Another, Trident Trust, speaks of the "South Dakota Advantage." .........

Convalescent plasma 'futile' in treating severe COVID-19 cases: research

Source: the hill

By Monique Beals - 10/05/21 05:40 PM EDT

Scientists from the University of Pittsburgh found that convalescent plasma treatment is "futile" to treat critically ill COVID-19 patients, according to findings from a study published Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Convalescent plasma treatment involves taking blood containing antibodies from recovered COVID-19 patients and infusing it into people who are currently fighting the virus.

The antibodies were thought to have some ability to help with the recovery process for active infections. Though the treatment style was successful for Ebola, it was deemed ineffective for most critically ill patients with COVID-19, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

"I think that the evidence we provide in this study should put to rest the question of whether there’s any benefit from this intervention in hospitalized patients," he added.

.................................

Despite the treatment's lack of success, McVerry added that the "prevention of hospitalization is the number one treatment for COVID-19, and that prevention comes in the form of vaccination," the Post-Gazette reported...........................................................................

As Many As Half A Million Shipping Containers Could Be Waiting Off Ports Of LA, Long Beach

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Cargo ships continue to arrive off the coast of Southern California, and the shipping bottleneck may be why product prices are going up, even though shelves remain empty.

Officials say there could be as many as half a million shipping containers on cargo ships off the ports of LA and Long Beach, waiting to be offloaded. Frustrated truck drivers say the port needs to speed up wait times and have more docks ready to offload products, to keep up with demands.

The ports recently broke several records for the number of ships they had at shore, as well as for the number of ships waiting to dock.

Average LA, Orange County Gas Prices Highest Since 2012

A number of factors are blamed for the bottleneck – the surge of the Delta variant throughout the world, lack of access to vaccines in some countries, a shortage of shipping containers, and another of truck drivers. Companies like Costco have been forced to charter their own container ships, but smaller companies hare having to pay higher freight charges. And most experts expect the shipping problems for months, and possibly years.......................

........................

Hill, who served as Trump's top Russia advisor on the National Security Council, said the warning she's sought to make in her forthcoming book is that populist politicians like Trump "rarely do anything to fix the situation for everybody ... and the risk of populist politics is that it short-circuits our democracy, because it's one leader saying: 'I'm the only person who matters in this system.'" The book, "There Is Nothing for You Here: Finding Opportunity in the Twenty-First Century," is set to be released on Tuesday.

Along these lines, Stephanopoulos asked if it was a mistake to work for Trump — a twice-impeached president who left the White House in disgrace following what Hill has described as a "self-coup" at the US Capitol on January 6.

"I saw myself as serving the country," Hill said of her time in the Trump administration, adding, "I think it was a mistake to have President Trump as the president, unfortunately."........................................

Severe flooding overwhelms Oman following historic landfall by Cyclone Shaheen

Source: accuweather.com

Updated Oct. 4, 2021 11:30 AM CDT

The death toll rose on Monday in Oman one day after Shaheen made an unprecedented landfall in the country. And forecasters said the landfall wasn't the only unusual part about the storm's journey.

Parts of northeastern Oman were reeling Monday following a direct strike from a deadly and rare tropical cyclone that made landfall over the weekend.

Cyclone Shaheen roared ashore as the first cyclone to make landfall in northeastern Oman in more than 130 years on Sunday night. The storm unleashed flooding rainfall and strong winds and was blamed for at least 13 fatalities as of Monday, according to the BBC.

...............................

Shaheen is the first cyclonic storm to strike northeastern Oman in modern record-keeping, according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist and Lead International Forecaster Jason Nicholls.

The last time northeastern Oman was dealt a blow by a cyclonic storm was back in the 19th century. An unnamed cyclone struck northeastern Oman on June 5, 1890, and more than 750 people were killed due to flooding rainfall and damaging winds.

Shaheen's path was unusual for a variety of reasons, according to AccuWeather forecasters. ......................................

Mike Pence's role ahead of the Jan. 6 riot lands under House investigation

Source: raw story

October 04, 2021
..............................

New reporting about White House legal adviser John Eastman's memo outlining plans for a coup shows Pence was more deeply enmeshed than previously known in the scheme to keep Donald Trump in office despite his election loss, and committee member Rep. Jamie B. Raskin (D-MD) wants to learn more about his role, reported the Washington Post.

"It's an important part of the historical record to determine how close Trump actually came to achieving his scheme of getting Pence to declare unilateral power to reject electoral college votes," Raskin told Post columnist Greg Sargent.

Eastman told the New York Times that he urged Pence and his chief counsel Greg Jacob shortly before Jan. 6 that the vice president could delay counting electors when Congress met to certify the election, thus sending the process back to GOP-controlled state legislatures that could send rogue electors for Trump and set off a contingent election in the House.

"I think Jacob was looking for a way for he and Pence to be convinced to take the action that we were requesting, and so I think he continued to meet with me and push back on the arguments and hear my counters, what have you, to try and see whether they could reconcile themselves to what the president had asked," Eastman told the Times.
