Supreme Court sidesteps decision on Trump presidential immunity claim in federal election interference case

Source: nbc

Trump is claiming broad immunity for actions he took in office, including efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results for which he faces criminal prosecution.

Dec. 22, 2023, 1:28 PM CST By Lawrence Hurley

WASHINGTON — Steering clear of a political firestorm for now, the Supreme Court said Friday it would not immediately decide the key issue of whether former President Donald Trump has broad immunity for actions he took challenging the 2020 presidential election results.

The court denied without comment special counsel Jack Smith’s request asking the justices to circumvent the normal appeals court process and quickly decide the legal question, which looms large in Trump’s criminal prosecution in Washington over allegations of election interference.

If Trump were to win on this threshold issue, the charges would be dismissed. If he loses, the legal proceedings in the trial court would continue, with Trump having other issues he could mount appeals over.

As a result of the court’s refusal to intervene, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit will take first crack at the issue; it is scheduled to hear oral arguments on Jan. 9..............

"Americans are really, really unhappy about grocery prices.".............

I will admit--I was upset yesterday after grocery shopping for a holiday gathering.
I do not buy anything elaborate-lots of baking supplies, fruit, veggies.
I did stop at a meat store for a small smoked ham--but satisfied as it was on sale.
Well, got this off my chest. Carry on

The economy is hot, but the people are bothered. Americans think the country is in dreadful economic shape despite strong wage growth, low unemployment, and steadily declining inflation. We know this from survey after survey. What we don’t really know is how people formed those judgments. To find out, The Atlantic commissioned a new poll. When the results came in, one finding jumped off the screen: Americans are really, really unhappy about grocery prices.

Working with Leger, a North American polling firm, we asked 1,005 Americans how they felt about the economy. As with other recent polls, this one painted a gloomy picture. Only 20 percent of people said that the economy has gotten better over the past year, compared with the 44 percent who said it has gotten worse. (There was a big partisan split, but even among self-identified Democrats, only 33 percent said the economy has improved.) Then we asked them to choose, from a long list, what factors they consider when deciding how the national economy is doing. The runaway winner was “The price of groceries for your home”: Twenty-nine percent of people picked it as their top choice, and 60 percent of people selected grocery prices among their top three. Other than “inflation” itself, nothing else came close—not gas, not housing, not interest rates, not the cost of major purchases. And when we asked what people had in mind when they reported that their personal finances were getting worse, 81 percent chose groceries...........................

Russia Plans to Mobilize Ukrainian Children in Occupied Territories

Source: kyivpost.com

Leaked conscript files and registration showed Russia’s plan to mobilize Ukrainian children born in 2007 for its invasion, said Mariupol mayor advisor.
by Leo Chiu | December 22, 2023, 3:03 pm

Documents from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) – now supposedly incorporated into Russia by Putin’s decree – showed the Kremlin’s plans to conscript children born in 2007 for its upcoming mobilization, reported Petro Andryushchenko, adviser to the mayor of Mariupol.

Recruiting children to fight against their own state would constitute a war crime.

Andryushchenko shared the documents in a Telegram update and said the creation of conscript files and the registration of children born in 2007 for military registration has already begun.

“For further military registration of students born in 2007, according to the lists you submitted earlier, it is necessary to create a personal file based on the attached lists until Dec. 29, 2023,” the document read.

Andryushchenko said the mobilization will likely take place after the Russian presidential election in spring and replenish Russia’s “assault-meat battalions.”

Again: @GovBillLee 's insidious A-F grades are to make schools in lower income areas look bad so privatizers can market

Republicans are like rats when they see cheese--taking the public money from public school funds.

Again: @GovBillLee
's insidious A-F grades are to make schools in lower income areas look bad so privatizers can market to them to steer public $$ away from underfunded schools into their pockets.

The grades are a measure of how badly the state is failing kids, not the schools.

Democrat Attacked Live On-Air During TV Interview

Source: msn

Story by James Bickerton • 5h

A live televised interview with Democratic mayoral hopeful Sheila Dixon was stopped on Wednesday after an unidentified individual began hurling objects at the Baltimore politician and heckling her, within her own home.

................

.............................

Footage was posted on TikTok where it was widely viewed, with one clip accumulating 860 comments, most of which expressed sympathy with Dixon over the situation.

According to local news website The Baltimore Banner, Dixon had a cold during the interview, and she spoke with a distinctly croaky voice throughout. The former mayor was promoting a public safety town hall due to take place later that day in South Baltimore, hosted by her along with WBFF Fox45 and local Councilman Eric Costello.

Asked about residents "biggest concerns" over crime Dixon responded: "So three things. One people don't feel safe, people are afraid. Carjackings, theft, stealing cars, and people want to see the presence of officers in their community engaged with them, walking the beat, talking to them, getting to know the residents and that's not happening."

At this point an item, which appeared to be an article of clothing, flew by Dixon's face slightly brushing her. Appearing unperturbed, she continued: "Yesterday I saw police officers that were in an area, but they were in their cars, not doing what they need to do.".............................................................

I'm calling BS on a narrative that's become widespread: The idea ...

I know of no Dem who thinks this. seems the nytimes believes Dems believe it.
But, I am glad the Colorado SC ruled against Trump on the ballot [it is on hold for now]

I do not have a subscription so I can not read it all.

I’m calling BS on a narrative that’s become widespread: The idea that liberals hope the 14th amendment is the “magical cure-all” that finishes Trump once and for all.

This NYT piece leads with this claim. 1/

Never forget trump wanted Obama kept off the ballot and tried everything in his power to do so.

And don't forget that Melania supported her hubby in demanding the birth certificate.

"It’s not only Donald who wants to see [Obama's birth certificate], it’s American people who voted for him and who didn’t vote for him. They want to see that," she argued. Behar then made the point that the birth certificate had already been on display and all over the internet. "We feel it’s different than birth certificate," Melania responded.

Birtherism, to recap, is a conspiracy theory Donald Trump has championed that Barack Obama wasn't born in the United States, therefore making him constitutionally ineligible to be president. Many see birtherism as racist due to the fact that no other U.S. president was ever questioned about his birthplace until Obama, the first black president, took office. It is a direct attack on his legitimacy.............................

75 Alaskan Rivers Turn Bright Orange, Tainting Water Supply, Endangering Humans and Wildlife; Scientists Investigate
Story

by Marissa Papanek • 8h

The problem is particularly prominent in the Brooks Range, a 700-mile mountain range that stretches from northern Alaska into Canada's Yukon Territory. At least 75 rivers and streams in the area have become tinted bright orange in the past five to 10 years.

The problem is believed to be a consequence of thawing permafrost due to climate change. The discoloration is the result of oxidizing iron and sulfuric acid, indicating the rivers are being inundated with high concentrations of heavy metals. The oxidation of minerals in the soil may also be lowering the pH of the water, therefore increasing its acidity, according to Scientific American.

The exact impacts of the changing pH levels on the river's intricate ecosystem are unknown, and scientists fear the ongoing issues may lead to leaching of various toxic metals, potentially endangering aquatic life and downstream communities. Not only do fish and wildlife rely on the health of the river, surrounding human populations depend on it for fish and drinking water.

“I think the pH issue is truly alarming,” Becky Hewitt, an environmental studies professor at Amherst College and part of a team investigating the phenomenon, said, according to Popular Science..................................
