Trumps big jobs announcement points to Obama-era success story

Source: msnbc

Donald Trump declared with pride yesterday morning, “Big announcement by Ford today. Major investment to be made in three Michigan plants. Car companies coming back to U.S. JOBS! JOBS! JOBS!” Soon after, Kellyanne Conway, a top aide to the president, added that Ford’s investments come just “two weeks after” Trump’s meeting with auto-industry executives.

The implication wasn’t subtle: Americans are supposed to believe that the president met with industry leaders, which led to Ford’s good news soon after.

But the White House’s latest effort to take credit for good economic news is eerily similar to its previous efforts – which is to say, it was wildly misleading. CNBC reported:

The White House on Tuesday promoted a Ford investment in American plants, most of which was part of a plan the automaker first announced in 2015...............................

Trump promised to bring back coal jobs. That promise will not be kept, experts say.

Source: washington post

By Darryl Fears March 29 at 8:00 AM

..............................With coal miners gathered around him, Trump signed an executive order rolling back a temporary ban on mining coal and a stream protection rule imposed by the Obama administration. The order follows the president’s campaign promise to revive the struggling coal industry and bring back thousands of lost mining jobs in rural America.

“I made them this promise,” Trump said, “we will put our miners back to work.”

...........................

As power companies switch fuels, “the amount of coal in the national energy generation mix (both Fuels and Electricity Generation) has declined by 53 percent since 2006,” according to a Department of Energy report released in January. Over the same period, electricity generation from natural gas increased 33 percent.

The shift was mirrored by employment, with jobs in natural gas and other cleaner energy resources rising and coal jobs declining, the report said. It cited a Bureau of Labor Statistics analysis showing that coal mining and support employment declined by nearly 40 percent between March 2009 and March 2016...................................

USA Today: Trump “repeatedly turned” to at least 10 Russian mobsters and oligarchs to expand his business
By Oliver Willis | March 29, 2017

Donald Trump involved several figures associated with Russian mafia activity in his business dealings, according to a new report from USA Today.

In order to expand his real estate business, Trump “repeatedly turned to wealthy Russians and oligarchs from former Soviet republics — several allegedly connected to organized crime.”

The newspaper documents at least 10 different figures from Russia with ties to criminal organizations and money laundering that did extensive work with Trump.

Evidence clearly shows Trump was lying when he said, “I have no dealings with Russia.” What is not known is the extent to which Russian crime money comprises Trump’s net worth (and ongoing income) because he has refused to release his tax returns (and congressional Republicans continue to help him cover them up).

Trump’s Russian crime cabinet includes the following figures:....................

In 2017, we unrig the maps

In 2017, the voice of Wisconsin citizens might finally been heard.

After years under a rigged and gerrymandered map, Wisconsin voters might finally have the ability to choose their State Representatives under a fair map that respects the will of the people.
However, even though a federal court found the current Wisconsin map to be unconstitutional our fight is not over.
The Republicans who rigged the map in the first place still get a chance to draw a new map.
We cannot let them repeat their tricks again.
Sign our petition today.

Tell Republicans that this is what a fair process for new maps should look like:
Open
The people of Wisconsin deserve an open process so that all voters can be heard during this important undertaking.

The unconstitutional maps that Republicans drew in 2011 were the product of a closed system that rejected input from the public and Democratic members of the legislature. As a new map is drawn in 2017, public hearings should be held around the state to ensure that citizens from all across Wisconsin can be a part of fixing these illegal maps.
Public
The people of Wisconsin deserve a process that is public so that all voters can be assured their voice is heard.

When the Republicans in the legislature drew their rigged maps, they swore to hide the process from the public. That’s not how a healthy democracy creates the basis of its foundation and as we begin the process of fixing the rigged system created by those secret meetings there is no reason for secrecy.
Fair
The people of Wisconsin deserve a fair process that represents all voters instead of favoring any one group over another.

At the heart of the court’s ruling was the idea that voters should choose their representatives and representatives should not be choosing their voters. The court’s ruling could not have been more clear: partisan gerrymanders cannot continue in Wisconsin and Republicans in the legislature must make this right.

For nine years, Joe Arpaio enjoyed solid popularity as the sheriff of metro Phoenix by locking up immigrants in the U.S. illegally and regularly telling news reporters that no one would stop his crackdowns.

The former lawman who made his fight against illegal immigration a fixture of his speeches and media interviews during his last three campaigns asked a judge on March 24 to prohibit prosecutors from mentioning those statements at his April 25 trial on a criminal contempt-of-court charge.

Arpaio, who was defeated last November after 24 years as sheriff for sprawling Maricopa County, faces the misdemeanor charge for disobeying a court order to halt his immigration patrols, which continued for 17 months after a judge issued the order.

To win a conviction, prosecutors must prove that Arpaio intended to violate the judge’s order. The 84-year-old Arpaio, who would face up to six months in jail if convicted, has acknowledged prolonging the patrols, but insists he did so unintentionally..................................

Trump scraps Obama's anti-wage theft protections

Source: Independent

President Donald Trump has signed new legislation repealing regulation designed to protect workers from wage theft. The Obama-era rule penalised businesses that violated wage and safety laws by pulling their government contracts if they racked up too many offences.

Those employee protections are now a thing of the past and, as the Huffington Post reports, Congressional Republicans argued that the regulation were too restrictive and killed jobs. Lawmakers used the Congressional Review Act on Monday to effectively repeal the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces rule. Republicans have employed the rarely used law to revoke more than a dozen Obama-era policies since Mr Trump took office.

On Monday evening, President Trump commended the new resolution. “Today I'm signing 4 bills under the Congressional Review Act that cancels regulations & eliminates unnecessary, job-killing rules," he wrote on Twitter.

The regulation forced businesses to disclose each time they broke a law in the past three years, including violations relating to civil rights, health and safety, and minimum wage and overtime violations...........................

Four Things Trump Could Do Right Now To Fix Obamacare

http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/03/four-things-trump-could-do-right-now-to-fix-obamacare-214962

A bipartisan scheme if Trump decides to save the system, rather than sabotage it.

By Michael Grunwald

March 28, 2017

.............Pelosi sent a letter to her caucus today asking for suggestions to improve the ACA. If Trump and congressional Republicans are also interested in pursuing reform instead of repeal, here are a few things they could do.

***

Defuse the Crisis.
The leading enemy of stability is uncertainty, and for insurers who must decide what to do about the exchanges by June, the leading source of uncertainty before last Friday was the Republican repeal push itself. That threat has apparently subsided, but the House lawsuit over cost-sharing subsidies could still blow up the exchanges. The House put the suit on hold after Trump’s election, anticipating Obamacare’s repeal, but if the Republicans want to avoid a major mess, they need to make the suit go away and make sure the subsidies keep flowing.

The lawsuit aims to block subsidies that reduce out-of-pocket costs for more than 6 million customers on the exchanges with incomes below 250 percent of the poverty line, or about $60,000 for a family of four. Insurers say it would be almost impossible to make their numbers work without those subsidies. Centene CEO Michael Neidorff, whose Fortune 500 company covers 1 million customers on the exchanges, says it’s “absolutely critical” for Trump and Congress to send a clear signal they’ll continue. “If they do that, we’ll stick with this,” Neidorff says. “I’m an eternal optimist. I don’t think they want to see millions of people lose insurance.”

On the other hand, if Trump and congressional Republicans decide to kill the cost-sharing subsidies, or even if their fate remains unclear, insurers of all types will be reluctant to risk another year on the exchanges.
“Without clarity, it’s going to be very difficult for even the most committed nonprofit to stay in that business,” says Ceci Connolly, president of the Alliance of Community Health Plans.

If Congress wanted to go even further to stabilize the exchanges, it could increase the cost-sharing subsidies, or for that matter Obamacare’s other subsidies and tax credits designed to ease the cost of insurance. Republicans have balked at spending more money to expand coverage, but their bill did boost aid to the young and the middle class; if they were willing to support those provisions without the bill’s cuts to the elderly and the poor, they could make insurance more attractive to more people, which could make the exchanges more attractive to more insurers.

“I don’t know of insurers who see the exchanges as a big profit center,” says Marilyn Tavenner, a former Obama administration health official who now runs America’s Health Insurance Plans. “They just want to avoid big losses. We would love to send a message that stability is here, that you can stay in this market.”
