Trump's standing in battleground states may be slipping

CNN Digital Expansion 2018 Harry Enten

Analysis by Harry Enten, CNN Updated 10:10 AM ET, Thu April 23, 2020

(CNN)President Donald Trump's path to reelection was always going to hinge on his performance in a handful of swing states. That path looks more perilous for the President in a series of recent high-quality polls.

Trump won the presidency in 2016 by winning the Electoral College while losing the popular vote. Previous polling has suggested that phenomenon could repeat itself in November: A lot of data suggested that Trump was, indeed, stronger in the battleground states than he was nationally.

But polling over the past month indicates his standing in those battleground states could be fading, bringing those numbers more in line with his national polling.

Here's a look at recent polls from Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, all states Trump won by about a point or less in 2016:

Florida: Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden led Trump by six points in a University of North Florida poll and four points in a Quinnipiac University poll. The previous polling average of probability polls had Biden up 2 points.
Michigan: Biden was up by eight points in a Fox News poll compared to the prior polling average of probability polls that had him up five points.
Pennsylvania: Biden held an eight-point advantage in a Fox News poll, while he was up just three points in the longer term probability polling average.
Wisconsin: Biden was ahead by three points in a Marquette University Law School poll. The longer term probability polling average had the race tied.
Now, we're just looking at four polls here, so I don't want to make too much of it. It is interesting, however, that Biden seems to be doing better than his longer term averages in this limited state polling data, while he is not doing the same in the national polling. ...............................

I really think trump needs to be taken
off camera. He is dangerous. But who will do it??

Oh President is a fucking moron and the fact that he’s still in office should make us all deeply depressed and mildly horrified.

Trump team wanted 'nationwide' access to malaria drugs, ousted vaccine chief claims

Source: POLITICO

Dr. Rick Bright says administration’s position would have offered little physician oversight for unproven Covid-19 treatments.

By DAN DIAMOND 04/23/2020 04:58 PM EDT

The Trump administration pushed for nationwide access to a malaria drug touted by President Donald Trump as a Covid-19 treatment “with limited physician oversight,” according to a person familiar with the allegations of Dr. Rick Bright, the HHS vaccine chief who was ousted from his position earlier this week.

Bright felt such a move was dangerous and responded by pushing for more clinical trials, the person said, but, under pressure from his superiors in the health department, eventually agreed to sign off on an emergency use authorization that allowed the Trump administration to acquire tens of millions of doses of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine and distribute the medicines to some patients hospitalized for Covid-19.

Bright, who was pushed out this week as head of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, is now alleging that he was sidelined after pushing back against the administration's demands.

The Department of Health and Human Services did not immediately respond to request for comment. POLITICO reported last month that career health officials had concerns about how Trump’s fixation on malaria drugs was undermining the nation’s response to the Covid-19 outbreak and that the White House was pressuring career health officials to prioritize the drug despite scant evidence. The drug was also championed by Trump allies like Oracle founder Larry Ellison and an array of Fox News contributors.

Bright’s lawyers on Thursday said that they would soon file a whistleblower complaint with the HHS inspector general and decried what they said were Trump administration efforts to undercut Bright’s credibility...................

House creates new select coronavirus oversight committee over GOP objections

Source: POLITICO

"This is about taking responsibility," Pelosi says.

04/23/2020 05:01 PM EDT

The House voted Thursday to establish a new investigative committee to monitor President Donald Trump's implementation of nearly $3 trillion in coronavirus relief measures, a step they said would safeguard the massive sums flowing to businesses, hospitals and individual taxpayers.

"It will be laser-focused on ensuring that taxpayer money goes to workers' paychecks and benefits and it will ensure that the federal response is based on the best possible science and guided by health experts — and that the money invested is not being exploited by profiteers and price gougers," said Speaker Nancy Pelosi in remarks on the House floor.

But the measure passed on a party line vote of 212-182, with Republicans unanimously slamming the effort as a veiled attempt to damage Trump politically. They described it as redundant to the multiple congressional committees already have jurisdiction to monitor the law.

"Why do we need another oversight committee? Speaker Pelosi said it's all going to be bipartisan. I'm sorry, I don't believe it," said Rep. Debbie Lesko (R-Ariz.), who accused other Democrat-led committees of working "nonstop to criticize President Trump and try to influence the 2020 election."

"I'm sorry. I call B.S.,” she added. .........

There is nothing “manly” about Trump.

Trump is a weak man’s idea of a strong man.

Egomania. Bullying. Thin-skin. Insulting strong women because he’s intimidated by them.

Toxic masculinity is pathetic foolery.

I would tag Gorka, but he blocked me because he’s a big tough guy.

It is refreshing to know that there are some Republicans with morals.

I am deeply concerned by the anti-Semitic sign at Ohio’s Statehouse during a recent protest rally. The sign was vile and disgusting. While even disgusting speech is constitutionally protected, it still demands condemnation.

Any complaints about the policy of this administration need to be directed at me. I am the office holder, and I appointed the Director. Ultimately, I am responsible for the decisions in regard to the coronavirus. The buck stops with me.

Donald Trump asks government to bail out his Scottish golf courses

By Andrew Learmonth @andrewlearmonth Journalist

BILLIONAIRE Donald Trump has asked the UK Government to bail out his golf courses in Scotland as they struggle to cope with the economic chaos of the coronavirus crisis.

The Trump Organisation is looking to furlough workers at its Ayrshire and Aberdeenshire courses.

......................................

........ Estimates suggest the firm is losing around $1m a day.

According to Bloomberg the company is seeking government aid to pay most of the salaries of staff at the two money-losing golf courses in Scotland.
................................

“We are no different to any other business, including many media companies - this has nothing to do with Trump and does not benefit the business - the actions we have taken are solely to protect people and their families who would otherwise be out of work and struggling to survive financially.”

Local councillor Martin Ford told Bloomberg: “‘The huge tab for this will be borne throughout the whole population through higher taxes.

“If what he says about his personal wealth is true, Trump doesn’t need the money, and I don’t see why UK taxpayers of the future should be helping him out.”..............
..................

The Trump Organisation was barred by Congress from seeking relief from the $500 billion rescue fund being administered by the Treasury Department. .................

‘I’m confused’: Twitter reacts to Trump criticizing Kemp’s plans to reopen Georgia

Social media lit up Wednesday evening after Donald Trump announced his opposition to Gov. Brian Kemp's decision to reopen Georgia businesses amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“They can wait a little bit longer. Safety has to predominate,” Trump said Wednesday. “Would I do that? No. I want to protect people’s lives. But I’m going to let him make his decision. But I told him I totally disagree.”

Among the first people to respond to Trump’s strong words was Kemp himself, who posted three tweets defending his decision and reiterating that he’s taking a “measured step.”

While Trump’s disagreement did not change Kemp’s plan to reopen barbershops, nail salons and other businesses Friday, twitter users were quick to say to say that Georgia’s governor had been thrown “under the bus.”

How Germany And South Korea Have Battled Coronavirus Better Than Others--a good Health Care system

They also had the political will--which I argue was just as important.

How Germany And South Korea Have Battled Coronavirus Better Than Others

By DAVID RISING April 23, 2020 10:28 a.m.

BERLIN (AP) — Derided by many economists for years for insisting on a balanced budget and criticized for a health care system seen as bloated and overly expensive, Germany has found itself well equipped now to weather the coronavirus pandemic.

Already applauded for early actions such as social-distancing regulations and aggressive testing seen as helping keep the death toll comparatively low, Europe’s largest economy has had the financial flexibility to launch a massive rescue plan to help businesses and keep workers paid.

As the country moves to relax some restrictions this week, Chancellor Angela Merkel is pointing to the example of South Korea, which relied on its experience fighting a different coronavirus five years ago to combat COVID-19, as the way forward.

Meantime in the U.S., some protesters have taken to the streets — supported by President Donald Trump’s tweets — to demand an end to virus-related shutdowns to help the faltering economy, which has caused tens of millions to lose their jobs, even if it could lead to an increase in deaths as the health care system struggles.

“This is a crisis which, on the one hand, has probably hit the U.S. where it is most vulnerable, namely health care,” said Carsten Brzeski, ING bank’s chief Eurozone economist. “While at the same time it has hit the German economy where it’s the strongest.”......................

.................“They had the means, but then they also had the political will, and also the very good analytical insights to use the means,” Brzeski, said, noting Merkel was a scientist before entering politics......................
