What To Expect When You’re Expecting Zika

WASHINGTON — Democrats played the baby card Wednesday in their push to get Congress to pass robust funding to combat the impending Zika crisis, bringing mothers, babies and noted pregnancy author Heidi Murkoff to Capitol Hill to make the pitch.

With toddlers scrambling around the Lyndon Baines Johnson room just off the Senate floor, Murkoff, the author of What To Expect When You’re Expecting, chided the legislative body for inaction in the face of an obvious threat.

“I just have to wonder why Congress is not acting promptly and fully to live up to that universal, sacred responsibility of protecting moms and babies, of putting moms and babies before politics,” Mukoff said.

The Obama administration asked Congress for $1.9 billion in February to combat the mosquito-spread disease, which is linked to microcephaly in developing infants, as well as to other frightening ailments.

So far, the Senate has passed just $1.1 billion as part of a much larger spending bill for which there is no equivalent measure in the House of Representatives yet. The House has passed only $622 million in a standalone measure that is paid for by taking funds from the effort to combat Ebola.

Neither House nor Senate leaders have offered any way of resolving the differences as the Memorial Day vacation looms, despite pleas from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other experts, noted Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.).

“We know it’s coming to our country, and as the weather is getting warming, our nation’s top medical experts say we must pass funding, on an emergency basis,” Coons said.

“I find it extremely difficult to understand how we could just ignore the advice of the CDC and our best medical experts,” Coons added. “Unfortunately though, that’s what we’re dealing with here in the Senate as we go into Memorial Day, which is the official start of summer and the mosquito season.”

Chris Zahn, a doctor who is a vice president at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, warned that it was foolish to delay dealing with the Zika threat when it could cost some $10 million to treat each afflicted infant, according to CDC estimates..............................

What Hobbies Could Hillary Take Up That Would Please David Brooks?
A look at the possible pastimes Clinton might enjoy—and the Brooks columns that would inevitably follow.

New York Times columnist David Brooks asks, Why is Hillary Clinton so unpopular? His unlikely answer: She doesn’t have hobbies.
ice Guys, and Neighbors 2
Nothing About Trump Matters But the Racism

Clinton was very popular as secretary of state—a 66 percent approval rating!—and not very popular now. Some might argue that’s because she’s back in partisan politics. Others might point to social science research that shows women are punished for the way they talk, for showing anger, for not wearing makeup, for not showing warmth, for acting authoritatively, etc—you know, all the sexist stuff. Not David Brooks. He writes:

Can you tell me what Hillary Clinton does for fun? We know what Obama does for fun—golf, basketball, etc. We know, unfortunately, what Trump does for fun.

But when people talk about Clinton, they tend to talk of her exclusively in professional terms.

More in sorrow than in anger, Brooks diagnoses the problem: “Clinton’s unpopularity is akin to the unpopularity of a workaholic.” In the informal social media era, she doesn’t talk about her softer side. “t’s doubly important that people with fulfilling vocations develop, and be seen to develop, sanctuaries outside them: in play, solitude, family, faith, hobbies and leisure.”

Just one weird trick (hobbies) to regain the adoration of the public. Of course, in the social media era, one weird trick always has a catch. In this case, the catch would be more David Brooks columns...............................

A Republican poll of Wisconsin released today showed that the state’s loathing of Donald Trump is real as Hillary Clinton leads the Republican nominee by 12 points.

A new Public Opinion Strategies (R) poll of Wisconsin found Hillary Clinton leading Donald Trump 43%-31%. The poll suggests that Trump’s poor showing in the Wisconsin Republican primary was not a mirage. Wisconsin voters don’t like Donald Trump.

The bigger problem for Republicans is that Trump could cost them a Senate seat. Former Sen. Russ Feingold is leading incumbent Republican Sen. Ron Johnson consistently in the polls. The Real Clear Politics average of polls shows Feingold up by 5.7%. With Trump showing no upside in Wisconsin, Johnson could be facing an impossible climate in November......................

...............Clinton leads Sanders 43 percent to 30 percent in Santa Clara County, according to the poll commissioned by the pro-business Silicon Valley Leadership Group.

The same poll of 600 likely voters found Clinton crushing Donald Trump: 64 percent to 20 percent.

"Silicon Valley, until proven otherwise, continues to be Hillary country and these results prove it," Silicon Valley Leadership Group CEO Carl Guardino said.

Her strong support in Santa Clara County came as no surprise to Guardino, whose group doesn't make endorsements.

"She's cultivated the tech community for decades both personally and in terms of policy," Guardino said. ..................

California senator defends Clinton for declining debate

By Mark Hensch

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) on Tuesday defended Hillary Clinton's decision not to participate in another debate with Bernie Sanders before California's primary.

“We’ve had nine debates,” said Boxer, a Clinton supporter, on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports." "I know everything that Bernie has to say and that Hillary has to say at a debate.

“I think everyone knows the distinctions and the differences and the parts of each of those candidates’ platforms where there’s agreement,” she added..

“People are smart. They know what’s happening. They know who stands for what and how and who. They know what’s going on.”

Clinton on Monday declined to debate Sanders in California ahead of its June 7 Democratic presidential primary.

“We believe that Hillary Clinton’s time is best spent campaigning and meeting directly with voters across California and preparing for a general election campaign that will ensure that the White House remains in Democratic hands,” communications director Jennifer Palmieri said in a statement.

Sen. Boxer fires back at Sanders aide: 'He wasn't there'

..................................

"We need to be working to win this election to unify, not go back and pick fights with one another, and I'm not picking a fight with him. He wasn't there."

....................

Boxer defended her actions during the convention, saying the situation was "extremely intimidating" and "frightening," with Sanders supporters upset over how the process was being run.

"Frankly they were so close to me, I don't know what they could have done," Boxer said.

........................

Boxer admitted she blew kisses at the crowd, but said it was after security had escorted her off the stage.

"I was heading to the exit and they were following me with more of these vile comments. I used a sense of humor and I blew them kisses," she said......
