She was sent to Rikers Island because she couldn't pay $500 bail. Now, she's dead

Source: CNN

By Emanuella Grinberg, Monica Haider and Taylor Romine, CNN

Updated 11:11 AM ET, Wed June 12, 2019

(CNN)Layleen Cubilette-Polanco was arrested in April and sent to New York's Rikers Island jail because she could not afford the $500 bail, her family said. Nearly two months later, the 27-year-old transgender woman was found unresponsive in her cell and later pronounced dead, according to the Department of Corrections.

Her death is the latest in recent weeks to draw attention to the plight of the transgender community. Civil rights groups say Polanco's death represents a web of factors that can trap people of color in the justice system -- especially transgender women of color -- with devastating outcomes.

"We know that the system failed Layleen," said David Shanies, a lawyer representing the family. "What we're trying to find out now is how that came to pass."

While officials investigate what caused her death, a community is in mourning and her family is searching for answers. They want to know how Polanco ended up at Rikers jail for misdemeanor charges and why was she left alone despite a medical condition that gave her seizures.

Mayor Bill de Blasio promised a transparent investigation of Polanco's death......................

The infamous Trump baby balloon may fly over Trump's planned 4th of July speech

Trump balloon makes appearance in UK visit promo 00:46

(CNN)It's been seen in the UK and Argentina. Versions of it have flown over border cities and protests around the US. Now, a feminist activist group has announced they are planning to fly a round, diapered Donald Trump baby balloon during the President's 4th of July address at the Lincoln Memorial.

The group, Code Pink, said in a statement that they plan to show up near Trump's much-touted Independence Day speech "to protest the racism, hatred, fear, and militarism that Trump stands for and promotes."

"On July 4, CODEPINK will parade the Baby Trump blimp in DC as an all out call to reject Trump," the announcement reads.
"When Trump speaks at the Lincoln Memorial, let's show him what a big baby he is!"...................

Nothing from either of the links talks about permits. Also note that title says 'may'.
would be grand if this did happen.

Code Pink Statement:

DC July 4: Baby Trump Parade

https://www.codepink.org/dc_july_4_baby_trump_parade

Event Description

On July 4, CODEPINK will parade the Baby Trump blimp in DC as an all out call to reject Trump.

President Trump is planning to speak at the Lincoln Memorial on July 4, at an event named "A Salute to America." But Trump's America has been one of putting children in cages, banning refugees and immigrants, aligning with the murderous Saudi regime, supporting Israel's occupation and system of apartheid, instigating a war with Iran, and spreading hate and racism across the U.S. and the world. We say no way!

Join us in D.C. on July 4 (exact time TBA) to protest the racism, hatred, fear, and militarism that Trump stands for and promotes.

The grifting is so blatant. And the promotion of the Trump Hotel is part of the ongoing #Emoluments Clause violation, which rendered Trump impeachable from the moment he took the oath of his office.

Trump Administration Seeking To Overhaul Forest Management Rules

Source: npr.org

June 12, 201912:30 PM ET

A logger cuts a large fir tree in the Umpqua National Forest near Oakridge, Ore. Federal land managers are proposing a sweeping rule change that could expand commercial logging on Forest Service land.
Don Ryan/AP

Federal land managers on Wednesday will propose sweeping rule changes to a landmark environmental law that would allow them to fast-track certain forest management projects, including logging and prescribed burning.

The U.S. Forest Service, under Chief Vicki Christiansen, is proposing revisions to the National Environmental Policy Act that could limit environmental review and public input on projects ranging from forest health and wildfire mitigation to infrastructure upgrades to commercial logging on federal land.

"We do more analysis than we need, we take more time than we need and we slow down important work to protect communities," Christiansen told NPR.

The proposed rule changes include an expansion of "categorical exclusions." These are often billed as tools that give land managers the discretion to bypass full-blown environmental studies in places where they can demonstrate there would be no severe impacts or degradation to the land.

..........................................
According to the government's own analysis — the last done in 2010 during the Obama administration — fewer than one-fifth of all timber and forest projects are appealed by citizens or environmental groups though. A bigger holdup is budget cuts, particularly in the Forest Service, where money has been diverted away from wildlife, habitat and forestry programs to pay for the skyrocketing costs of wildfire suppression........................................

Trump told aides to deny internal polling showed him trailing Biden

https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/447858-trump-told-aides-to-deny-his-internal-polling-showed-him-trailing-biden

By Rachel Frazin - 06/11/19 09:09 AM EDT

President Trump told aides to deny that his internal polling showed him trailing former Vice President Joe Biden in key states, according to a new report from The New York Times.

Later, when the polling in 17 states conducted by Tony Fabrizio leaked, Trump told aides to tell reporters that other data showed him doing better, according to the Times story written by Annie Karni and Maggie Haberman.

The polling reportedly showed Trump behind Biden in a number of the states he needs to take to win reelection, though the Times report did not identify them.

“No one has ever asked us to lie about anything," a Trump campaign official told The Hill in a statement on Tuesday. "The poll in question shows President Trump beating a defined Democrat opponent.”

Beyond Trump's internal polling, a series of recent surveys have shown the president trailing Biden in several important states...............................................

Steve King not allowed on Air Force One for Trump's trip to Iowa Tuesday

Source: CNN

Rep. King insists he's not racist

(CNN)Rep. Steve King, the Iowa Republican who was stripped of his congressional committee assignments earlier this year, was not allowed to fly aboard Air Force One on Tuesday as President Donald Trump traveled to Iowa, two GOP officials say.

King, who represents the state's 4th District in Western Iowa, asked the White House to join the President's entourage, but administration officials rejected the request, two officials familiar with the matter told CNN.

Republican Sens. Joni Ernst of Iowa and Deb Fischer of Nebraska joined Trump aboard Air Force One. Ernst had not been planning to travel with the President, citing her voting schedule, but ended up flying to Iowa with Trump.

CNN has reached out to King's office for comment.

While King has a history of making incendiary remarks around race and immigration, King was removed from his committee assignments and rebuked by members of his own party after giving an interview with The New York Times in January in which he made racist comments. In the article, King, as part of a defense of what he said was the "culture of America," asked how certain terms had become controversial in modern discourse.
