Could it really be the case that the president of the United States is regurgitating some baseless crap that someone made up on Facebook? NBC News has pointed out that President Donald Trump’s conspiracy theory that he shared during a Fox News interview Monday night is very, very similar to a debunked viral Facebook post. In the wild interview, Trump claimed that “we had somebody get on a plane from a certain city this weekend, and in the plane it was almost completely loaded with thugs, wearing these dark uniforms, black uniforms, with gear and this and that.” He refused an invitation to say more about the claim, saying the matter is “under investigation right now.” Back in June, a post went viral on Facebook claiming: “At least a dozen males got off the plane in Boise from Seattle, dressed head to toe in black... Be ready for attacks downtown and residential areas.” It also claimed one passenger had “a tattoo that said ‘Antifa America’ on his arm.” The post was comprehensively debunked at the time—but perhaps that was after it caught the attention of the White House.

Asked about the bizarre story again on Tuesday morning, Trump doubled down. “A person was on a plane, said there were about six people like that person, more or less, and what happened is the entire plane filled up with the looters, the anarchists, rioters, people looking for trouble,” Trump told reporters. The person, who was on the plane “going from Washington to wherever” felt “very uncomfortable,” he added. Trump said he would try to put reporters in touch with the person. “Maybe they’ll speak to you, maybe they won’t.”

Trump is a certifiable nutcase.
Seriously, someone-some Repug with influence has to speak out.

But I will not count on Repugs to do what is right.

Trump's 'plane loaded with thugs' conspiracy theory matches months-old rumor

Source: nbc

Evidence-free social media posts about groups of people coming to terrorize suburbs have thrived in recent months, inspiring some people to arm themselves.

The conspiracy theory that President Donald Trump pushed on Monday that a plane “almost completely loaded with thugs” was set to disrupt protests was almost identical to a rumor that went viral on Facebook three months ago.

In an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, Trump claimed that “we had somebody get on a plane from a certain city this weekend, and in the plane it was almost completely loaded with thugs, wearing these dark uniforms, black uniforms, with gear and this and that.”

He then claimed the matter was “under investigation right now.”

There is no evidence of any such flight. When Ingraham asked for more information about the flight, the president said, "I'll tell you sometime."

I really do not know what it will take to get the Repugs to realize that Trump has gone off the deep edge.

U.S. tops 6 million coronavirus cases

Source: cbs

Updated on: August 31, 2020 / 7:34 PM / CBS News

The United States on Monday topped 6 million confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. The U.S. has reported a million more coronavirus cases and about 21,000 more deaths in just the past three weeks.

The grim milestone continues a trend that sees the U.S. reporting far more confirmed cases and higher numbers of coronavirus-related deaths than any other country in the world. Brazil and India both have more than 3.5 million cases and Russia has nearly 1 million, though critics have cast doubt on the accuracy of some nation's official tallies.

The total number of confirmed cases worldwide is more than 25 million, meaning the U.S. accounts for about 24% of all cases around the globe despite only having around 4% of the world's population.

More than 183,000 people in the U.S. have died as a result of COVID-19. A recent projection model by the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation says the total number of U.S. deaths from the virus could reach 317,000 by December.....................................

White House suppressed coronavirus reports and downplayed virus, House panel says

Key Points

The House Select Subcommittee on Coronavirus published eight weeks of state coronavirus reports, which are prepared by the task force and sent privately to governors.
Each report contains data on confirmed cases, testing, the mobility of a state’s residents and more for every state.
The reports directly contradict optimistic messaging pushed by President Donald Trump and other administration officials over the summer, the Democrat-led committee said.

As the White House coronavirus task force privately warned state officials that they faced dire outbreaks over the summer, top Trump administration officials publicly downplayed the threat of Covid-19, documents released Monday by the House Select Subcommittee on Coronavirus show.

The subcommittee published eight weeks of internal White House coronavirus reports, which are prepared by the task force and sent privately to governors. The newly published reports begin on June 23 and the most recent report that’s published is from Aug. 9. The White House has declined to make all the reports public.

“Rather than being straight with the American people and creating a national plan to fix the problem, the President and his enablers kept these alarming reports private while publicly downplaying the threat to millions of Americans,” subcommittee Chairman James Clyburn, D-S.C., said in a statement. .......

America Is Running Low on a Crucial Resource for COVID-19 Vaccines: Monkeys are scarce

America Is Running Low on a Crucial Resource for COVID-19 Vaccines

The country is facing a monkey shortage.

Sarah Zhang August 31, 2020

In the past seven months, more than 100 COVID-19 vaccines, therapies, and drugs have been pushed into development. But for any of these treatments to make it to humans, they usually have to face another animal first: a monkey. And here, scientists in the United States say they are facing a bottleneck. There just aren’t enough monkeys to go around.

“Nationally, there is basically a big shortage,” says Koen Van Rompay, an infectious-disease scientist at the California National Primate Research Center. Primate research in the U.S. is expensive and often controversial, making it challenging even in normal circumstances. The pandemic has made acquiring monkeys even harder. “We can’t find any rhesus any longer. They’ve completely disappeared,” says Mark Lewis, the CEO of Bioqual, a contract research organization that specializes in animal testing. Scientists in academia and industry alike are all competing for a limited pool of monkeys.

The reasons for the shortage are threefold. First, COVID-19 has created extraordinary demand for monkeys. Second, this coincided with a massive drop in supply from China, which provided 60 percent of the nearly 35,000 monkeys imported to the U.S. last year and which shut off exports after COVID-19 hit. And third, these pandemic-related events are exacerbating preexisting monkey shortfalls. A 2018 National Institutes of Health report had found that NIH-funded national primate centers would be unable to meet future demand and specifically discussed a “strategic monkey reserve” to provide “surge capability for unpredictable disease outbreaks.” A disease outbreak is upon us; the strategic monkey reserve was never created.

Furthermore, monkeys infected with COVID-19 have to be kept in Animal Biosafety Level 3 labs, which have specific design and ventilation requirements to prevent the spread of pathogens. The U.S. has a limited number of ABSL-3 labs................................................

Hillary: "With a population of 328 million in the United States, it may require 2.13 million deaths

All in---- is having a segment on herd immunity right now

@HillaryClinton
“With a population of 328 million in the United States, it may require 2.13 million deaths to reach a 65 percent threshold of herd immunity, assuming the virus has a 1 percent fatality rate.”

Let’s not try out this strategy.
