Tennessee Republican's fight against cousin marriage ban ends in massive defeat

Source: raw story

Brad Reed April 11, 2024 1:30PM ET

The dream of legalized cousin marriage ended for one Tennessee state lawmaker on Thursday when his last-ditch bid to block the bill banning the practice went down in defeat.

Local news station WSMV reports that a bill making it illegal to marry your first cousin sailed through the Tennessee House of Representatives on Thursday, with just two members, both Republicans, voting to oppose the measure.

One of those members.....................

In a speech opposing the bill that was posted by the Tennessee Holler's Twitter account, Bulso makes the case that it doesn't seem right that cousins aren't allowed to marry when LGBTQ couples can.

.........................

He then went on to say that, if the concerns about cousin marriage are really about avoiding the increased risk of birth defects, then no one should object to having first cousins of the same sex get married.

U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon effectively eliminated the possibility that former President Donald Trump could go to trial in July for allegedly mishandling classified documents.

In an order on Wednesday, Cannon said Trump had until May 9 to disclose which classified documents he would use for his defense.

Guardian reporter Hugo Lowell pointed out that special counsel Jack Smith had proposed March 18 for Trump to file his notice under Section 5 of the Classified Information Procedures Act (CIPA).

"Special Counsel proposed March 18 deadline for Trump to file his Sec 5 notice, in order to get to a July 2024 trial," he added. "No way that is happening now, given deadline is 7 weeks later. But she also didn’t give Trump the June 17 deadline he wanted — so no 11th Circuit ammo either."..............

Trump says all the charges against him are "bullshit" and he's going to go through these

And yet he continues to file motions days after days to delay the trials.

Trump says all the charges against him are “bullshit” and he’s going to go through these “horrible trials” and win big, then everyone in the country will vote for him in Nov.

Washington — Special counsel Jack Smith urged a federal judge to keep a presidential recordkeeping law out of instructions that would be provided to the jury in the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump, according to court documents filed by Smith's team late Tuesday. Prosecutors warned that including the law in the instructions risked jeopardizing the proceedings, and signaled they would appeal the judge's decision if she ruled against them.

Last month, U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon, who is overseeing the case in Florida, asked Smith's and Trump's legal teams to file jury instructions based on two hypothetical scenarios: in one, the president has the authority under the Presidential Records Act (PRA) to categorize any records as personal. Under this scenario, Cannon wrote that "neither a court nor a jury" would have the ability to review the decision, a finding that could nullify much of the special counsel's case against Trump.

In the other, the jury would be able to examine a record that had been retained by a former president and make a finding that it was either "personal or presidential," under the PRA. Under this scenario, it is possible jurors could find that some official documents were mishandled.

Federal prosecutors rejected both proposals and wrote Tuesday that the PRA — a 1978 law that manages the maintenance of White House documents produced during each presidency — "should not play any role at trial at all," arguing that Trump's alleged mishandling of classified records occurred after his presidency ended................................

WASHINGTON (AP) — His job on the line, House Speaker Mike Johnson is dashing to Florida to meet with Donald Trump this week and has offered far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene a seat on his own “kitchen cabinet” as he draws closer to the MAGA forces that now dominate the GOP.

The sudden moves Wednesday come as the House hit a standstill, thrown into chaos once again.

The House Republicans are tearing themselves apart, unable to work together to push party priorities through Congress yet watching their majority fritter away the days without a cohesive agenda or much to show for their 15 months in power.

Johnson was unable to pass a national security surveillance bill that was tanked by his own Republican majority shortly after Trump pushed them to “kill” it. But at the same time, the speaker was being warned off partnering with Democrats on that bill and others, including aid for Ukraine, or risk Greene calling a snap vote that could oust him from the speaker’s office.

...................

Heading into the November election, Johnson has hitched his party’s prospects and his own political survival to Trump, believing the presumed presidential nominee and his MAGA supporters will boost Republican lawmakers and ensure they keep control of the House from Democrats.

On Friday, Trump and Johnson will appear for a press conference on “election integrity” at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago club, according to a Trump campaign official.............

Group of Republicans blocks FISA bill with spy powers deadline looming

Source: The hill

by Rebecca Beitsch and Mychael Schnell - 04/10/24 2:19 PM ET

A group of House Republicans on Wednesday tanked a procedural vote to begin debate on a bill to reauthorize the nation’s warrantless surveillance powers, leaving the chamber scrambling on how to address the important spy tool before it expires next week.

Nineteen Republicans joined Democrats in voting against a rule for legislation to renew Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), blocking the measure from advancing 193-228.

The move comes after former President Trump on Wednesday urged Republicans to “KILL FISA” — throwing a wrench in an already contentious debate.

The failed vote marks yet another instance of members of the GOP tanking what is typically a routine party-line vote to protest legislation put forward by leadership.

Led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and other MAGA-aligned conservatives, the group offered conflicting rationales for blocking the bill.

They were upset with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) for backing the legislation without a warrant requirement, even though their upheaval means the warrant amendment they insisted has broad support will no longer get a vote.......................................
