Wisconsin's Democratic governor sues Republican Legislature over blocking basic functions

Source: AP

Story by By SCOTT BAUER, Associated Press • 7h

ADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Democratic Gov. Tony Evers on Tuesday sued the Republican-controlled Legislature, arguing that it is obstructing basic government functions, including signing off on pay raises for university employees that were previously approved.

Evers is asking the liberal-controlled Wisconsin Supreme Court to take the case directly, bypassing lower courts.

Evers said it was “a bridge too far” and “just bull s---” that Republican state lawmakers were telling 35,000 University of Wisconsin employees who were expecting pay raises to “stick it.”

“You can’t do that,” Evers told reporters at a news conference. “That’s why we’re suing and that’s why we’re going to win.”

Evers argues in the lawsuit that committees controlled by a few Republican lawmakers are being used by the Legislature to “reach far beyond its proper zone of constitutional lawmaking authority.”

Republican Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu dismissed the lawsuit as frivolous, saying in a statement that Evers was “working to diminish the voice of Wisconsinites by limiting the authority of the legislature and unduly strengthening his own administration.”

Trump legal brief: Judge Engoron says Trump's lawyers 'whistling past the graveyard' on possible fines

Source: yahoo news

Tue, October 31, 2023 at 2:24 PM CDT·5 min read

Judge Arthur Engoron chides Trump’s lawyers over their claim that he shouldn’t be fined as punishment for financial fraud committed in New York. A federal grand jury in Georgia indicts an Alabama man for making threats directed at Fulton County District Attorney

..........................

Engoron has already found Trump, his adult sons and their family business liable for years of financial fraud relating to the overvaluation of their assets. The ongoing trial will decide what penalty the defendants must pay.

“Several witnesses have testified that they would have acted differently had they known the statements of financial condition were fraudulent,” Engoron responded.

“I think, to a certain extent, the defendants are whistling past the graveyard here,” the judge added.

.................................

Why it matters: Coming on Halloween, Engoron’s “whistling past the graveyard” characterization of how Trump’s lawyers view the threat of large fines and other sanctions should spook the former president.

I think -given the last few days of Trumps tweets--Trump is already spooked.
But no one is talking jail time--at least not yet.

The man left voicemail messages threatening Willis with violence.

........................

Arthur Ray Hanson was charged with transmitting interstate threats to injure Willis and Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat, who controls the jail where Trump was fingerprinted and photographed after he was indicted in August on charges of trying to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia.
..........................

Hanson, 59, called the Fulton County customer service line twice in August and left two voicemail messages threatening violence against Willis and Labat, according to court records.

"Watch it when you're going to the car at night, when you're going into your house, watch everywhere that you're going," court records quoted Hanson as saying in the message left for Willis.

"I would be very afraid if I were you because you can't be around people all the time that are going to protect you; there's going to be moments when you're going to be vulnerable," the message said, according to court records. "When you charge Trump on that fourth indictment, anytime you're alone, be looking over your shoulder."....................

Mike Johnson's Wife Takes Down Website That Compared Being Gay To Bestiality, Incest

HuffPost first reported on Kelly Johnson's counseling service that likens LGBTQ+ people to people who have sex with animals and family members.

HuffPost reported Friday that Kelly Johnson, the wife of the Louisiana Republican and newly elected speaker, is owner and CEO of Onward Christian Counseling Services, which promotes Bible-based pastoral counseling. Her website featured a link to its 2017 operating agreement, which lays out the company’s corporate bylaws ― and states that the business is grounded in the belief that sex is offensive to God if it is not between a man and a woman married to each other.

It specifically puts gay, bisexual and transgender people in the same category as people who have sex with animals or family members, citing all of them as examples of “sexual immorality.”

“We believe and the Bible teaches that any form of sexual immorality, such as adultery, fornication, homosexuality, bisexual conduct, bestiality, incest, pornography or any attempt to change one’s sex, or disagreement with one’s biological sex, is sinful and offensive to God,” reads a passage from the eight-page business document....................

Vampire Burials Discovered and Disturbed in Poland Dig

In Poland, a team of archeologists made an unsettling discovery. Using non-invasive ground-penetrating radar, they discovered a long forgotten graveyard site, believed to be used mainly for those outcast from society and buried as vampires, with precautions taken in case they rise from the dead.

The 400-Year-Old Remains of a Child Once Believed to Be a Vampire Was Discovered in a Locked Grave in Poland
The tomb was padlocked as a safeguard against the deceased.

“He was originally buried in an upright position, face down, with a triangular iron padlock folded under his feet,” Polinski said.

The boy’s remains were excavated, except for his shins and feet. Polinski said the grave was disturbed after the boy was buried but researchers have not been able to pin down exactly when. It is also unclear what the people who had exhumed his body had intended to do with it, though it is possible they intended to burn or destroy the corpse. A short distance from his grave, archaeologists excavated the remains of three more children.

Last year, researchers in Poland excavated a 17th-century woman buried with a sickle around her neck and padlock on her foot near where the child was buried. Photo courtesy of Łukasz Czyżewski

Polinski added that the boy’s grave is unique and that no other child burials have been observed in a similar state.

“In fact, from the moment of discovery, it was clear that the padlock that was discovered, in a sense closing this tomb, was a safeguard against the dead child,” he said, and not a measure to protect the boy’s remains in any way.

Court arguments on keeping Trump off ballot in Colorado begin

Source: CBS news

October 30, 2023 / 11:19 AM / CBS/AP

A hearing on the use of the Constitution's "insurrection" clause to bar former President Trump from running for president again is underway in Colorado, and oral arguments before the Minnesota Supreme Court in a similar case are scheduled for Thursday.
.............
The cases both invoke what's known as the disqualification clause, Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, and the provision has now been cited in the two lawsuits brought by voters in Colorado and Minnesota who argue Trump is constitutionally ineligible to hold federal office because of his actions surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol.

The suits aimed at the former president set up what are sure to be closely watched legal battles that will test the reach and force of a constitutional provision enacted in the wake of the Civil War, and the outcomes could upend the Republican primary if Trump, currently the leading candidate for the GOP nomination, is found to be ineligible to seek the White House for a third time.

Section 3 of the 14th Amendment states:

No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

Lots more short videos about this on this thread.

@ZelenskyyUa
Appalling videos from Makhachkala, Russia, where an angry mob broke into the airport searching for Israeli citizens on the flight from Tel-Aviv.

This is not an isolated incident in Makhachkala, but rather part of Russia’s widespread culture of hatred toward other nations, which is propagated by state television, pundits, and authorities.

The Russian foreign minister has made a series of antisemitic remarks in the last year. The Russian President also used antisemitic slurs. For Russian propaganda talking heads on official television, hate rhetoric is routine. Even the most recent Middle East escalation prompted antisemitic statements from Russian ideologists.

Russian antisemitism and hatred toward other nations are systemic and deeply rooted. Hatred is what drives aggression and terror. We must all work together to oppose hatred.

Many people came to the airport in Makhachkala to wait and check the flight from Tel Aviv.
