Every Day Trump Repeatedly Emails His Supporters a Dangerous Message: Democracy Doesn't Work

Be outraged, don’t accept the election results…and send money.

Washington, DC, Bureau Chief

I’ve heard from Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and Lara Trump. I’ve heard from Rudy Giuliani, Ronna McDaniel, and Newt Gingrich. And I’ve heard from Donald Trump. Over and over again. The 2020 election was stolen from Trump. The left-wing mob, the Democrats, the fake news media—they successfully plotted together to pull off the greatest political heist of all time. Trump really won. But fake ballots were counted. Real ballots were trashed. American democracy was undone. The people have been robbed of their rightful president.

Yes, this is what I am told every day—multiple times—by Trump, his family, and his lieutenants. I am on several rightwing email lists, including various Trump campaign lists, and for the past three weeks, each day I have received a steady stream of emails signed by Trump or one of his minions. These missives all request money for Trump’s so-called “Election Defense Fund”—that is, his effort to overturn the election results and retain power—and they are obvious acts of grift. Though they generally ask for small amounts—from $5 to $45—the fine print on the donation page notes that unless you kick in about $8,000, the money goes to Trump’s political operation and the Republican National Committee, not the special fund that pays for the legal challenges Trump has been mounting (and losing) and the recounts he has been requesting. These emails are merely the latest iteration of Trump’s campaign money-grab, as he tries to financially exploit the clown-show coup Giuliani has been running for him.

But this barrage is doing more than squeezing cash out of Trump fanatics. For the recipients, it is solidifying a dangerous message: the election was illegitimate. Though campaigns typically do not disclose such information, it is a fair assumption that millions of people are receiving these solicitations on a daily basis. Your pro-Trump uncle or aunt—they are constantly being told that the evil Democrats have mounted a coup to topple Trump. Yes, Trump tweets this every day. But for those Trump-supporting Americans not on Twitter, these emails form a ceaseless reinforcement of Trump’s false counter-narrative: the 2020 election was rigged.

In one email with the sender identified as “Rudy Giuliani Alerts,” the Trump campaign calls Joe Biden’s victory the “biggest political scam of all time,” and it claims, “We have hundreds of affidavits from Americans all over the Country testifying under OATH to voting irregularities. It’s reported that vans, trash cans, and boxes full of ballots for Biden were brought in to be counted during the early morning hours without Republican poll watchers.” The Democrats, this mailing asserts, “are attempting to STEAL this Election.” Eric Trump tells me, “Make no mistake, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and their allies in the Fake News media are trying to steal this Election… Biden couldn’t get 10 people to a rally and went days without leaving his house, while my father received 11 MILLION more votes THIS YEAR than he did in 2016.” His wife Lara emails, “The reports of voter fraud have been alarming. In addition to hundreds of sworn affidavits coming in from Americans across the Nation claiming they witnessed irregularities.”

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is also attempting to rile me up: “It’s time for us to get MAD. This Election is unlike any we have ever witnessed. The systemic corruption is breathtaking. The mainstream media, the Left-wing academics, and the entrenched Democrats will all ask us to roll over right now. There is voter fraud in this Election that MUST be reported and uncovered.” Republican Party chair Ronna McDaniel reports that the “Radical Left” used “the coronavirus as an excuse to change Election laws” and that the Republicans have rounded up 1,200 “incidence reports” related to fraud and voting irregularities.

Mueller Investigation Prosecutor Calls on Next Attorney General to Investigate, Prosecute Trump: ‘Mr. Trump’s Criminal Exposure is Clear’

By Charlie NashNov 24th, 2020, 10:03 am

Andrew Weissmann, who served as a senior prosecutor during the 2017 to 2019 Mueller Investigation against President Donald Trump, called on the next attorney general under President-elect Joe Biden to investigate and prosecute Trump.

In a Tuesday article for the New York Times, Weissmann noted that although another investigation into Trump would “further divide the country,” the next attorney general “should investigate Mr. Trump and, if warranted, prosecute him for potential federal crimes.”

“Mr. Trump’s criminal exposure is clear,” Weissmann claimed, adding that they “amassed ample evidence to support a charge that Mr. Trump obstructed justice,” during the Mueller Investigation.

He went on to acknowledge that Trump may “pardon not just his family and friends before leaving office but also himself in order to avoid federal criminal liability,” but argued, “If Mr. Trump bestows such pardons, states like New York should take up the mantle to see that the rule of law is upheld. And pardons would not preclude the new attorney general challenging a self-pardon or the state calling the pardoned friends and family before the grand jury to advance its investigation of Mr. Trump after he leaves office.”

Trump's National Security Adviser Floats 2024 Bid

November 24, 2020 at 7:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard

“No national security adviser has ever run for president. Few people outside of Washington policy circles even know who the White House’s national security adviser is at any given moment,” Politico reports.

“Yet Robert O’Brien, President Donald Trump’s fourth — and least well-known — national security adviser is telling friends and colleagues he is considering a presidential bid in 2024.”

Computer repairman who claimed he gave Hunter Biden data to Giuliani closes shop as laptop saga gets stranger

Weeks before the Nov. 3 presidential election, the world’s political intrigue turned to a Wilmington computer repair shop after the New York Post revealed that its owner gave a copy of a laptop hard drive he believed belonged to Hunter Biden to a lawyer representing Rudy Giuliani.

Ten days after the election, a sign on the repair shop’s door said it had closed. A neighbor said the owner had left town.

A slew of new information has surfaced in the weeks since, including details about the laptop’s journey from the repair shop to Giuliani's office.

Yet with fears of fake news flooding the nation's consciousness and Giuliani's resistance to share the source material, it remains unclear whether the emails purportedly found on the hard drive and which formed the basis of the disputed New York Post story are authentic.

Most Republicans in new poll say they'd vote for Trump in 2024

BY JORDAN WILLIAMS - 11/24/20 07:35 AM EST

A majority of Republicans surveyed in a new poll -- 54 percent -- said they would vote for President Trump in 2024.

The Morning Consult-Politico Poll released Tuesday found that 12 percent of GOP voters said they would choose Vice President Mike Pence in the 2024 primary instead, while 8 percent said they would vote for the president’s son, Donald Trump Jr.

In addition, 68 percent of Republicans voters said they consider President Trump to be more in touch with the GOP's “rank and file,” compared to 20 percent who said the same of congressional Republicans.

In addition, 71 percent said they considered the president to be more effective than Republicans on Capitol Hill, and an equal percentage said they considered him committed to the U.S.’s best interest.

Biden Supporters In Pennsylvania Look Ahead To A 'Traditional Presidency'

So with the books now closed on the election in Erie, we decided to check in with some Biden supporters in the county whom we'd encountered earlier in the campaign.

To a person, the tension has melted away — even with Trump refusing to concede.

"Walking on sunshine, man"

Take Michael Keys, a city councilor in Erie. When we first met after Labor Day, he was a bit stressed. Now, with the election over, his greeting is beyond effusive.

"I'm walking on sunshine, man!" he says as he greets me in the lobby of the Booker T. Washington Community Center in Erie. We're both wearing masks. His has a message in big, bold letters stretched across his mouth. It reads: "VOTERS DECIDE."

In September, Keys was working hard to turn out the African American vote in the city of Erie. Now he's quoting the lyric of that pop song from the 1980s, and he's full of optimism.

GOP Senators Named By Bernstein Frantically Deny Being Anti-Trump in Private, Insist They Are Totally Behind Lame-Duck President

By Joe DePaoloNov 23rd, 2020, 12:41 pm

A number of the Republican senators reported by Carl Bernstein to have “extreme contempt” for President Donald Trump in private are frantically denying the story and pledging their allegiance to the lame-duck commander in chief.

Sunday night on Twitter, Bernstein named 21 GOP senators who have privately expressed “disdain” for the president. While some of those listed, such as Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), are hardly a surprise, some of those senators outed by Bernstein did raise eyebrows. And several of those in that latter subset are racing to deny the story, and throwing their lot in with the outgoing president.

In a statement provided to Mediaite, Sen. Mike Braun (R-IN) said he is standing with Trump.

“This is more false news from a CNN political analyst, as I was one of President Trump’s top defenders during impeachment and strongly support his legal efforts to ensure that every legal vote is counted,” Braun said.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) and Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) likewise professed allegiance to the president, in statements from their spokespeople given to the Washington Examiner.

Republicans Are Calculating, not Cowards

November 23, 2020 at 8:09 am EST By Taegan Goddard

Dan Pffeiffer: “The leading theory in Washington is cowardice. Most political observers believe that for the last four years Republicans remained silent about Trump’s chaotic incompetence and crass corruption out of trepidation. Whenever a Republican enables another Trump transgression, every liberal blue checkmark tweets ‘COWARD.’ The sense among reporters is that Republicans don’t like what Trump says or does, but if they speak up they will be tweeted out of the party.”

“This narrative is comforting because it implies that the Republican Party is not beyond repair — they are just cowards, not bad people. Here’s the problem: the events of the last few weeks make it crystal clear that this narrative is wrong. It is way too generous to the Republicans.”

“Cowards want to to do the right thing but are too afraid to do it. I do not believe the Republicans want to do the right thing and I do not believe they are concerned about the damage Trump is doing to our democracy. Ultimately what bothers them about Trump is not that he is a racist authoritarian. It’s that he is a clumsy, incompetent racist authoritarian. The Republican supplication to Trump’s whims — before and after the election — is not cowardice, it’s calculation.”

The Election Really Wasn't That Close

November 23, 2020 at 9:09 am EST By Taegan Goddard

First Read: “What’s gotten lost in all of the focus on President Trump’s lawsuits, his baseless accusations of voter fraud and his administration’s unwillingness so far to begin the transition is a simple fact. The 2020 presidential election wasn’t really that close.”

“Right now, Joe Biden’s popular-vote lead over Trump stands at 4 percentage points, 51 percent to 47 percent – and it’s only going to grow once more of New York’s votes (finally) get counted. That would give Biden the second-largest popular vote margin out of the 21st century’s six presidential elections, with only Barack Obama’s 7-point win in 2008 being greater.”

“When it comes to the Electoral College, the tally stands at Biden 306, Trump 232 – which happens to be the exact same split as Trump’s 2016 win versus Hillary Clinton (but in reverse). And Trump referred to that as a ‘massive landslide victory.

The Republican Party has split in two. Let's keep it that way.

Opinion by Jennifer Rubin

November 23, 2020 at 7:45 a.m. EST

The Republican Party has split in two. The dividing line is not ideological. To the contrary, if anything, the collapse of a once great party during the Trump era demonstrates that ideology is secondary in politics; values, norms and character are primary.

In one half of the former GOP stand President Trump, his pathetic enablers in his campaign and in right-wing media, and the vast majority of Senate and House Republicans, including frequently discussed 2024 challengers (Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas, Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Josh Hawley of Missouri, Marco Rubio of Florida). These Republicans seem to ignore the attempted coup taking place in front of their eyes by the candidate they claimed just a few weeks ago was not so bad after all. They refuse to acknowledge that President-elect Joe Biden is the legal, legitimate winner; instead, they have countenanced (by silence or affirmation) frivolous litigation designed to overthrow the results of a democratic election. Their silence makes them complicit in Trump’s personal intimidation of election officials. That makes them no better than two-bit thugs, such as Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro and Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, who refuse to recognize the will of the people that is the essence of democracy.

Anti-democracy Trump loyalists dissemble, choose willful ignorance (not a single instance of fraud has come to light in nearly three-dozen lawsuits) and hide from the media to avoid rendering an opinion at odds with their cult leader. We can enjoy the delicious irony that the 2024 contenders have now enabled the person who will block their presidential ambitions, but that is small consolation when so many members of a major party disavow reality and democracy.

In this regard, the usually rational Republicans (e.g., Sens. Rob Portman of Ohio and Tim Scott of South Carolina), the shameful provocateurs (e.g., the anti-impeachment House members who spouted Russian propaganda during impeachment) and the party functionaries (e.g., Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel) are all in the same boat. When Trump is actively trying to overturn an election and disenfranchise millions of voters (targeting heavily Black cities), silence is consent.
