Chelsea gets it: ‘We Are Not Electing a King’

Posted on Feb 16, 2016

Chelsea Clinton has hit out at her mother’s Democratic rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders, leveling harsh criticism at his proposal to end mass incarceration in the U.S.

Chelsea told a town hall audience in Cleveland, Ohio, on Tuesday that Sanders’ goal “worried” her and is unrealistic, as most of the country’s inmates are held in state, not federal, prisons.

Sanders recently described the U.S. incarceration rate, which is the highest in the world, as an “international embarrassment,” pledging to prioritize criminal justice reform under his presidency. More than 2.2 million people are behind bars in the nation, according to the latest Department of Justice figures.

“We are not electing a king, we are electing a president,” Chelsea said. “We need someone who understands what they have to do in the job [as president] but also in partnership with Congress, governors and mayors.” She added, “My mother understands how the government works.”

Clinton Beats Sanders in Survey of LGBT Voters

Not my miles but enough to matter:

The survey was conducted Feb 7-10 and included voters in 46 states. More from Community Marketing & Insights, which conducted the survey:

Participants were asked, “When choosing a President, how important is it to you that the candidate shares the following views on important issues facing Americans today?” Of the 18 issues presented, civil rights issues were in the top categories:

• 98% indicated that “supporting LGBT civil rights” was very or somewhat important

• 98% indicated that “nominating LGBT supportive Supreme Court candidates” is very or somewhat important.

• 96% of LGBTs indicated that “addressing racism/racial inequality in the U.S.” was very or somewhat important.

• These civil rights issues were equally important as improving the economy at 98% importance.

Mother Jones: Lewis remark "undoubtedly true," Bernie's civil rights activism "brief and localized"

Basically, Lewis was a leader of the movement Bernie sometimes participated in over the three years he was at U Chicago:

Lewis' comments can be seen as a mild dig at Sanders. (In the same breath he said he had met Bill and Hillary Clinton.)

But it's also undoubtedly true.

The Georgia congressman was a titan of the civil rights movement. A participant in the Freedom Rides organized by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), he went on to lead the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and still bears the scars he received at Selma. Sanders' involvement was, by comparison, brief and localized, his sacrifices limited to one arrest for protesting and a bad GPA from neglecting his studies. But Sanders was, in his own right, an active participant in the movement during his three years at the University of Chicago.

Although Sanders did attend the 1963 March on Washington, at which Lewis spoke, most of his work was in and around Hyde Park, where he became involved with the campus chapter of CORE shortly after transferring from Brooklyn College in 1961.

Guess what? Bernie Sanders actually has backers...on Wall Street

Meredith Burak is a third-generation Wall Street executive. At 32, she has worked in global wealth management for Bank of America and Merrill Lynch. She thinks Wall Street is one of the few places in the country where people can truly realize the American Dream. And she's supporting Bernie Sanders for president of the United States.

The same Bernie Sanders who said this about Burak's industry: "The reality is that for the past 40 years, Wall Street and the billionaire class has rigged the rules to redistribute wealth and income to the wealthiest and most powerful people of this country."

Burak doesn't take it personally. "Wall Street has been very good to my family," she said. "It has enabled myself and my cousins and people around me to go to college."

.........

She doesn't seem very worried that Bernie is going to end the gravy train any time soon.

Hillary has a killer message and she rolled it out last night:

Hillary reintroduces herself as the Best Change-Maker:

In Concession Speech, Hillary Clinton Pitches Herself as the ‘Best Change-Maker’
Tue Feb 09 2016 15:13:36 GMT-0800 (Pacific Standard Time)

“What is the best way to change people’s lives so we can all grow together?” she said. “Who is the best change-maker?”

“You are!” people in the audience shouted.

http://www.nytimes.com/live/new-hampshire-primary-2016-election/in-concession-speech-hillary-clinton-pitches-herself-as-the-best-change-maker

Excerpts:

Now, the real differences in this race are truly over: 'How do we create a future of prosperity, opportunity, and security for all of us?' We need to build a growth and fairness economy with higher wages and more good-paying jobs — including a bold, national mission to create millions of jobs in clean energy, manufacturing, and infrastructure.

But when children anywhere in our country go to bed hungry, or are denied a quality education, or who face abuse or abandonment, that diminishes all of us. That's why I did start my career at the Children's Defense Fund. That's why I went undercover in Alabama to expose racism in schools. That's why I worked to reform juvenile justice in South Carolina. And that is why I went to Flint, Michigan, on Sunday.

When people anywhere in America are held back by injustice, that demands action. That is why I believe so strongly that we have to keep up with every fiber of our being the argument for, the campaign for human rights. Human rights as women's rights, human rights as gay rights, human rights as worker rights, human rights as voting rights, human rights across the board for every single American. Now, that is who I am. That is what I've always done.

And we've learned it's not whether you get knocked down that matters: It's whether you get back up. So, my friends, please join me in building on the progress we've made under President Obama. . . . . I know there are those who want to deny the passion and the purpose you all show every day for this campaign, but you are the reason we are here and you are the reason we are going to win the nomination and then win this election together."

PBO is making his 6th visit to Rancho Mirage in Palm Springs on Friday

Which is in my neck of the woods or at least within a hundred-mile radius, woo-hoo!

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Arrival in Palm Springs set for Feb. 12
The president is meeting with Southeast Asian leaders at the Sunnylands estate in Rancho Mirage.

President Barack Obama shakes hands with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Sunnylands estate in Rancho Mirage in 2013.

President Barack Obama will arrive in Palm Springs on Friday to meet with Southeast Asian leaders at a summit at the Sunnylands estate in Rancho Mirage, a White House official said. Obama will arrive in Palm Springs on Friday, Feb. 12, in advance of the summit.

The visit will be the president’s sixth to the Coachella Valley in less than three years. He’s previously used Sunnylands to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Jordan’s King Abdullah II and has played golf at area courses with longtime friends.

NPR: Angry Trump and Sanders voters are upset about "creeping changes in the culture"

and a White House that is "unresponsive," from:

Political Reporters Wrestle With How To Depict What's Driving Voters
Updated February 9, 20168:23 AM ET

http://www.npr.org/2016/02/09/466108315/political-reporters-wrestle-with-how-to-depict-what-s-driving-voters

Which confirms a perception I've long held that supporters of both candidates basically dislike Barack Obama, never liked Barack Obama, and stopped liking Hilllary once she aligned herself with Barack Obama. All this is cloaked in a polite figleaf of populist economics which in Sanders' case has very little to do with socialism.

Thoughts?
