Anyone have a clue why there's three names for the "terrorist" in Iraq and Syria.

Politicians and pundits regularly use three names.

ISIS/ Daesh/ ISIS

I'm guessing there is a nuance I'm missing.

Israelis killed in Jerusalem bus stabbing and car ramming

Source: Guardian UK

Two Palestinians armed with a knife and a gun have launched a deadly attack on a Jerusalem bus, killing two Israelis and injuring three more in the worst day of violence since the start of the current escalation in tensions.

In an almost simultaneous attack in a Jewish neighbourhood of the city on Tuesday morning, an assailant rammed a car at speed into a bus stop before stabbing bystanders, killing one and injuring two others.

Footage showed those waiting at the stop thrown into the air and the driver, a man in a blue T-shirt, running from the car with what appears to be a meat cleaver and hacking at one of the people knocked down. He moved on to start attacking an older looking ultra-orthodox man before being shot by a security guard.

Amid calls by Jerusalem’s mayor, Nir Barkat, to seal Palestinian neighbourhoods of the city, the Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, is to meet in an emergency session with his security cabinet to consider his response later on Tuesday.

Man hit by 16-pound pine cone in S.F. park files $5 million suit

tourist visiting the Bay Area for Fleet Week last year was doing nothing more than reading and napping under a tree in a federal waterfront park in San Francisco when a 16-pound pine cone fell on him and crushed his skull, his lawyer said Monday.

Now, Sean Mace, a U.S. Navy veteran, is suing the U.S. government, the National Park Service, the Department of the Interior and San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park where he was injured for $5 million in the hopes of changing policies so that no one else falls victim to the same type of bizarre incident.

“This guy has an irreversible brain injury and he’s only in his mid-50s,” said Scott Johnson, a San Francisco attorney representing Mace in the lawsuit. “He’s had two surgeries already and he is going to need a third.”

Mace went to the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park at the Fort Mason Center on Oct. 12, 2014, to find a spot to watch the Blue Angels air show. He found himself what he thought was a peaceful place to read and rest in the northeast corner of the park under a stand of coniferous Araucaria bidwillii trees, more commonly known as bunya pines or false monkey puzzle trees, according to the lawsuit filed Sept. 4 in San Francisco federal court.

Israel vows to defeat 'knife terror' after new attacks

Source: AFP

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Monday that Israel would not bow to "knife terror" while four stabbings in Jerusalem gave no sign of Palestinian unrest slowing.

Frustrated Palestinian youths have defied president Mahmud Abbas as well as an Israeli crackdown by staging violent protests in annexed east Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank, while 18 stabbings have targeted Jews since October 3.

There have been warnings of the risk of a full-blown uprising, or Palestinian intifada.

The stabbings have killed two Israelis and wounded about 20, including a 13-year-old critically injured on Monday.

Tourists record great white shark devouring seal near Alcatraz

Savage nature was on display when a great white shark devoured a seal just a few feet off Alcatraz Island in full view of gawking tourists, the first attack by the ferocious finned predator in the modern history of San Francisco Bay.

The bloody spectacle over the weekend was proof that one of the most feared beasts of prey in the ocean sometimes takes feeding forays into bay waters that swimmers, windsurfers and kayakers frequent. Some believe it was also a sign that this year’s robust El Niño is driving sharks northward into uncharted territory.

The attack was recorded in all its gory detail by a tourist standing on a dock, complete with the superlative-laced exclamations of a boy who had a once-in-a-lifetime view of the carnage.

“That’s a great white! Holy crud!” yelled the boy in the video taken by tourist Meredith Coppolo Shindler, which showed the telltale dorsal fin skimming around a deep red plume of blood left by the butchered pinniped.

Controversy after scientist finds rare bird -- and kills it

When scientists start to fight, I try to take a ringside seat.

I know they won't throw punches. Instead, they will brandish higher-grade weapons such as intellectual and moral superiority.

And so it is in the case of Chris Filardi. He's the director of Pacific Programs at the American Museum of Natural History.

Last month, he was in the Solomon Islands with other researchers. They first heard, then espied the rare male moustached kingfisher.

Then, as the Dodo reports, the beautiful orange and blue bird was "collected as a specimen for additional study." This turns out to have been a slight euphemism for "killed for additional study."

Filardi wasn't universally popular for this decision. He took to Audubon to write: "Why I Killed A Rare Kingfisher So That I Could Study It And Become More Famous." Wait, no. His article was headlined: "Why I Collected a Moustached Kingfisher." (The comments section to this article is well worth a read.)

Mystery of American journalist killed in car crash in Turkey... just days after she claimed intelligence services had threatened her over her coverage of siege of Kobane

An American journalist has been killed in a car crash in Turkey just days after claiming she claimed the Turkish intelligence services had threatened her over her reporting of the siege of Kobane.

Serena Shim, who worked for Iran's state-owned Press TV as Turkey correspondent, died in the city of Suruc after the car in which she was travelling reportedly collided with a 'heavy vehicle'.

Shim's death came just days after she spoke on camera of her fears of being arrested, claiming Turkish intelligence agents had accused her of spying after one of her reports suggested ISIS militants were being smuggled back and forth over the Syrian border in the back of aid vehicles.

Shim, an American citizen of Lebanese origin, had been working in Turkey for Press TV - the Iranian state-owned television network.
