Hundreds injured in blast in north-eastern city, a base for refining and petrochemical industries

Hundreds of people have been injured by a massive explosion at an industrial port in Tianjin in north-east China, caused by a shipment of explosives that went up in flames.

Three or four hundred people arrived at the Tianjin harbour hospital after the blast, some in ambulances and some on their own, the Beijing News reported, quoting an unnamed medic who works there.

An employee of another hospital also said the emergency department was full, and staff are trying to contact all their doctors, the paper reported.

“The hospital cannot count how many patients we have received – there are too many of them and many of them have burn injuries,” said one doctor at another hospital, who had been called back from a conference in Beijing to treat the injured.

Jeb Bush Suggests ‘Women’s Health Issues’ Are Overfunded

It was a casual aside during an interview, but it could haunt Jeb Bush in a general election in which women’s votes — and issues — could prove pivotal.

“I’m not sure we need half a billion dollars for women’s health issues,” Mr. Bush said during an interview with a leader of the Southern Baptist Convention on Tuesday.

The assertion came in the middle of his answer to a question about defunding Planned Parenthood amid a wave of hidden-camera videos that have portrayed its employees in unflattering ways.

Mr. Bush said the federal government should stop financing the organization, and then veered off course, into a discussion of what could be done instead with its $500 million in federal funds.

That's going to leave a mark. It appears the GOP learned nothing from 2012. Republicans are on course to make 2016 once again a focal point of how they really feel about women and women's issues.

Democrats Joe Manchin and Joe Donnelly vote to defund Planned Parenthood

Two moderate Senate Democrats split from their party on Monday, voting to defund Planned Parenthood, while two others decided to oppose the measure being pushed by Republicans.

Two prominent moderates, Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) and Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.), voted to defund Planned Parenthood. Two others who were considered to be likely swing voters, Sens. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) and Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.), voted against the bill joining 43 other Democrats and Republican Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois to defeat the measure.

Both Manchin and Donnelly, moderate Democrats from conservative states, said they could not support federal funding for Planned Parenthood while questions remain about the legality of the group’s actions.

Ultimately they both decided to buck his party leaders and President Obama.

Traitors to all of us, both women and men, of the Democratic party. Remember them if you're in their states when they next come up for a primary challenge.

Police have identified the shooter in Thursday night’s attack inside a Louisiana movie theater as 58-year-old John Russell Houser. Authorities say the man is from Alabama and had been staying at a local hotel recently. They described him as a “drifter” who had disguises in his car. They say he appears to have been armed only with a .40-caliber handgun, and that his car was parked outside an emergency exit door—indicating that he planned to get away.

Officials say they know little about the shooter, and are requesting that people with information on him contact local authorities. A Google search for the name reveals a Tea Party Nation page registered to a person with that name. Authorities have not confirmed whether the page, registered in June 2013, belonged to the shooter. The owner of the Tea Party Nation page identifies his hometown as Phenix, Alabama.

China may bring in 'two-child policy' to tackle demographic timebomb

Source: The Guardian

Thirty-five years after enacting draconian birth control rules blamed for millions of forced abortions and the creation of a demographic “timebomb”, China could be on the verge of introducing a two-child policy. The new regulation, under which all Chinese couples would be allowed to have two children, could be implemented “as soon as the end of the year if everything goes well”, a government source was quoted as saying by the China Business News.

The highly controversial and often brutally enforced one-child policy was introduced by China’s Communist leaders in 1980 amid fears of a catastrophic population explosion. The government credits it with preventing 400 million births, but the human cost has been immense, with forced sterilisations and abortions, infanticide, and a dramatic gender imbalance that means millions of men will never find female partners.

In 2012 – in one of the most shocking recent cases of human rights abuses related to the policy – a 23-year-old woman from Shaanxi province in north-west China was abducted by family planning officials and forced to have an abortion seven months into the pregnancy.

Liang Zhongtang, a demographer from the Shanghai Academy of Social Science, said the policy should have been abolished long ago. “The core issue is not about one child or two children. It’s about reproductive freedom. It’s about basic human rights. In the past, the government failed to grasp the essence of the issue,” he said.
